I've always wanted to play UO... but seems like I'd have to read a set of encyclopedias to learn everything about the game. I actually got UO as a gift back when it came out.. but I was just a kid and had no idea what was going on and just ran around chatting with people Lol.

Do you think UO is hard to learn? What would be your advice for a noob just starting out?

What do you like about UO?

The worst and best aspect of UO is it's complexity. Nothing compares. You don't have to learn it all over night. Make a swordsman or fencer and click on stuff and hit it. Very simple. You'll pick up bits and pieces as you go along. After years and years there's things I don't know and places I've never been. There will always be something new to get involved with. Just take it slow and have fun and the rest will come. Biggest decision you'll really need to make is 3D or 2D. 3D has more features, 2D has that classic timeless look (to me). Just don't try to learn it all in a day. Ain't gonna happen. But fencing or swords is the way to go for a newb. Learn to hit stuff and heal yourself and you'll be on your way. Haven is the place for new players, that was created after I'd been there done that, but I guess there's a lot there geared for training the new player. Lots of gifts and such for doing quests that teach you the game.

So, my brother and I have been playing since about 2000, 2001. Last year our sister decided to give it a try after years of ridiculing us for playing it.

We gave her gold for a house, and advice when she asked for it (which hasn't been often). She plays it more than we do for the past year, even if she can't "do" half of the high end content (be that fighting mobs, crafting, PvPing....though from the start she has not shied away from PvP). The nitty gritty specifics (especially when it comes to crafting and fine tuning character training) can be difficult to pick up, even for vets.

The thing is, there is SO much you can do. The game, even today, is very unstructured. To some, that is intimidating, as there is not a clear path to "leveling." For a noob just starting out, I would suggest going to a medium-medium/high population shard (Lake Superior, Catskills, Chesapeake, Great Lakes) and try a few types of characters out. See what seems fun right off the bat. Look into who the bigger guilds are (maybe use the shard forums here on Stratics as a guide) and see what they are like and think about joining one. The nice thing about being in a guild(s) is you can still play solo when you want, but you'll make friends and have people who will help you out along the way.

Thirteen years later, there are still things I haven't done. Like make a bard. I've never made a bard. So perhaps tonight I will.

Oh Atlantic is the number one populated shard. Packed with people. Great Lakes is populated but not like Atlantic. I've been playing Legends cause there's tons of room for housing and it's kinda quiet and relaxing :) You can go to a dungeon and it's not packed wall to wall with people. If you really like grouping up you'd lean towards Atlantic. If your more a lone wolf you might like a server like Legends. With Great lakes in the middle of the two extremes.

Atlantic dungeons aren't even packed. I walked through the underworld the other day and saw 0 people.

Legends is cool though. I used to play there a lot. Last I checked there were multiple keep spots wide open.

Is it hard to learn? It depends on how your brain works lol. I can't get mine around Imbuing/reforging..haven't even tried...

What I like about UO? How much room do I have to type? ;)

It's not the same day to day....one day you can go mining, the next you can go tame a nightmare...
OR you can build furniture to decorate your house...or grow plants..or go kill stuff to get seeds to grow plants..

Go chop some wood...go kill some critters...fight a boss...play pretty music and tame the mightiest of beasts...

Get on a boat and go fishing...maybe die to a sea critter..maybe find some buried treasure....

Cast powerful spells or hack and slash baddies with a mighty axe

Enjoy a drink with your friends at the local tavern or go sit and read a book quietly at the library

UO is amazing, and it has a great community full of helpful people.

This reminds me of somebody asking me if they should try to learn to play the guitar. If you've got the inner motivation, you'll figure it out and love it. If you don't have some sort of inner need to play, you won't learn it. I reckon you'll know pretty quickly how UO strikes you once you start a character. Obviously, it struck my chord.

just take ya noob char to a any em event and any shard ...apparently noob chars can get a drop by simply hitting the end boss twice and healing a dragon once or just standing there and being rezzed....so iam reliably informed on here...then spam in straight after the event for 1 billion gold......then u won UO on your first week......yes sarcasm xxx

Hey guys thanks for the advice ;) It's cool hearing what you guys like about UO.

I started a toon on Chesapeake. So far my template is Swords, Chivalry, Tactics, Anatomy, Healing, Resisting Spells. Not sure what I'll do for the last skill.

I've been fighting the good fight in Old Haven and now all my skills (except for healing and Resisting spells) are up to 50. I met a guy who gave me like 50k gold and some gear. Having fun so far! it's cool fighting with the Chivalry skill.

My question is, where should I go next to fight monsters?? I think I will just continue fighting but I've done all the newbie quests for my skills. I also want to build a house ^^ But dont know much about that yet.

Look at bushido for your next skill - more damage - see bushido in uoguide.com - there's a bushido quest in new haven too
This is a plan if you're mainly building your character solo:
1. Try the earth elementals in the mines SW of New Haven - if you can get an elemental slayer sword, it will help - the faster the sword, the faster you will advance (katana is good)
2. Mess around with earth elementals just inside the Shame entrance when you get tired of new haven earth elementals - Shame has chance of better loot
3. When you get 70 real skill in swords and tactics, you do whirlwind = more damage and faster skill gain. Get a repond slayer radiant scimitar (Soul Seeker is a good one) and try whirlwind on troglodytes on Painted Caves. Stay near the entrance to see if you're ready for them yet. They can take you past GM

Yes it is. Don't worry about the complexity at first.

Run around New Haven and surrounding environs, pick up things off the ground, get used to the game. Remember this game is old and try and show some patience with its craziness.

The complexity is there for when you get experienced and can customize your equipment to your specific character's needs. It's not really complexity so much as it is a great amount of potential for customization. You needn't worry about much beyond the basics yet.

Poke around and ask for help, have fun, and welcome aboard.
