After 17 years, I learned you cannot have to chars with the same name on one shard. It confuses the hell outta the game lol.

ya i learned this a long time ago.
and again when i got my shard shields.

makes me wonder about a fella i knew years ago who's characters all had the same name.
that would have been nasty with the desktops.
at least with uoassist you can change it to save by ID number instead of by name but the desktop your out of luck.
and - in case ya didnt know - the desktop dosnt care about caps or no caps.
i tried to get around it one day by adding some Caps and it didnt help any.

Had a Uriah Heep on Origin, mage. Made a Uriah Heep, new archer. The new archer, when I logged in the first time, and all the mages macros and desktop. Set him up with my warrior macros, and logged out.
Came back a bit later and logged the mage in, he had warrior macroes.

Looking at the folder in documents, it seems even tho I made two, logged em both in, and have the name on my login screen twice, there is only one Uriah Heep folder created.

Weird, because they each have their own armor and stuff on the paperdoll.

And yeah, I've seen a few with the same names running aroun too, that's why I tried it

So after fooling with it some more, I guess I could have all the names the same, as long as they wanted the same macroes and skills...

I learned that lesson a long time ago, luckily by my husband doing it before I tried it hehe

So the only way to do it if you don't want to have to share a desktop and settings is to create the characters on separate accounts, which is what I ended up doing.

when the frustration settles, I'm gonna try it again but put 2 spaces between the names, see if it recognizes that as different =)

Actually, I think the problem is specifically the same shard on the same ACCOUNT. I've had the same issue. Definitely a "fun" one. LOL

That's why often I made one Malag'aste with the apostrophe and another Malag-aste with a hyphen. Then they are the "same" but not identical and create separate folders when on the same shard together.

Since UO uses the character name to create the macro files for each shard you play, creating two characters with the exact same name will cause UO to override the old macro file if you change it.
Adding a space to the name should do the trick. Not sure if UO trims name strings, so I can't tell if adding a space to the end of the name will work.
Different letter capitalization won't help either, as Windows file system is case insensitive.

You could always keep multiple folders in Windows and rename them as needed. Ender-archer and Ender-mage for example, then change whichever one you want to use to just Ender. Not super convenient but better than sharing macros or changing names slightly.

I used to have all chars the same name till i got tired to copy and paste before playing each char lol.. since then and by then i mean around 2000 ... i have remade all of.my chars. sucks they never fixed it. but oh wells

I know it's a bug, but it technically makes sense from a roleplaying perspective, that if you have 2 characters with the exact same name, it must really be one character with a split personality disorder thinking it is two people. Makes sense that would cause some problems

It makes it hard. What's even more fun is to have the "split" personality on 2 different accounts and play them at the same time. That was fun.

Remember that if you were born before the split of the shards you can be on all shards.

I've only had this problem once but it would be real nice if the macro folders were unique per character not by name. For example, the folder could be called Olcher-123456789 where that number is the same as the in game chat number (pretty sure that's unique per your character).

When I first made my account I made two Gidges for role-playing purposes. The first Gidge was a warrior. The second was a crafter. They were "the same person" but got split during the shard separation and took on different aspects of the Original Gidge's personality. It was interesting. One with black hair, one has white(well greyish)... etc.

Anyyyyywayssss.. I never had an issue with any macros being crossed on the same shard in the early years as neither were a mage and both used runebooks with recall scrolls or key macros. My general screens are set-up basically the same way. As each character became defined that's when things went haywrire. LOL I have icons on my screen but since I enjoy my keyboard macros, the few icons I do have are acceptable for both.

I WAS going to make all five of them Gidges. whew!!!
