EC High Resolution Art Update

Is this still a thing or has it been dropped entirely?

I recall it being said that it would take quite a while to implement. And it has been quite a while so I was just curious.

You'd think they'd at least make the KR art available to those who want them.

I was looking forward to the High Res Art upgrade more than anything else in the game.

With this bad news, and the fact that there has been very little new content added, I'll likely be going down to 1 account.

I can think its fair to say well never see those graphics. It's been what 2-3 years since we first heard of the new graphics. Ill have to dig it up when we first heard about it

I'll wait for verification, but that does not bode well for my future interest either, especially with SotA and Shards both on the horizon. It's not the art style that's the issue... it's the RESOLUTION (specifically the lack thereof and the apparent inability for it to scale cleanly on a modern monitor).

It's sad really that UO currently only has 1 artist.

Really!? Only one artist!? Wow...:(

I think that solidifies the reality we aren't ever going to see High Resolution in UO.

It's not just bad for the High Resolution upgrade, it's bad situation with regard to any future content.

How much new content can you add with 1 artist?

There's plenty of area to add in plenty of content (addint in creature abilities and challenge levels with the existing creature base, live events, EM events, player run events, etc). That's one area that I think the team (small as it may be) has done well.

My biggest issue with new art content is wondering if it is done in a higher resolution at the start or if it's done in UO's native resolution. If it's the latter (lower resolution), this creates an ever expanding amount of work that would have to be translated into a higher resolution making the project take that much longer. If it's the former (higher resolution) then while it doesn't add to the artwork needed to be scaled upward, at the moment, it takes away from working on existing assets.

Either way feeds into the self-sustaining cycle of keeping UO held back as a now "niche" product instead of giving it a chance at really rebuilding itself as a contemporary mainstream option. By remaining the niche item it has become, this will keep the income levels at the lower points that disallow further investment into the Team and the game which in turn prevents the ability to offer an improved option.

Onifirk must be part time then, or shared with DAoC, as the amount of new art over the last two years hasn't been that large. In fact, unless there is some draconianly convoluted approval process, each piece could have been done in less than a week. (From being ordered, mocked, to final, etc.)

Giving us a switch to turn on the KR art back on, at least the world art (walls, roofs, plants, furniture), would be the best option at this point Leave the CC item art for now though, as KR's versions were horrid.

Upping the avatar resolution needs to be done, but that should be relatively easy. Write a script to re-render the art and patch it out to the EC.

In the future, the item art can be redone in batches and patched out. I think every EC user will gladly live with a piecemeal approach as long as there is consistent progress.

This approach would significantly reduce the workload.

I would have accepted a piecemeal approach from the beginning, and I agree on the world art vs item art... the plant artwork in KR was AMAZING and something I sorely miss (not to mention my nice grey stone fountain that turned into a squat... white... thing).

I've even talked about the piecemeal approach having watched Path of Exile progress from a fairly rough Beta into a nice crisp isometric/3d ARPG... as well as seeing the progression/evolution of Shroud of the Avatar's artwork from the initial Releases forward.

I think the EC players would understand.

UO's resources are bare bones as it is. Spending time to update art is a complete waste of time. I use EC exclusively and don't have any issue with the current status of the way things look. Devs should focus on game play - not updating the appearance of tiles.

I had my CC game window size problem solved and EC clarity problem eased for me. My tower failed and I bought a laptop to replace it, 1366x768 resolution on a 15.6 inch display. Aside from missing all the screen real estate for open containers, I think I'm going to like the change. The EC graphics are decent on this new toy.

Gaming laptop monitors are shrinking for some reason. I just bought a new MSI Dominator that has a 17" screen, which the largest they presently produce. My last one was a 24", so this change will take some getting used to.

Yeah... I'm not going from a 23 inch 1080P monitor to something I would have used 10 years ago just to make one game not look like butt.
I made my new computer choice based on more than UO clients. :)

While a 4K is gorgeous on a 70"+ screen, I question the need for it on a laptop :p

Maybe when we have true photorealistic games...

If its by hand (which it would almost have to be to look any good at all) and they have ONE artist... it will simply not be done. Even just the non mobiles, it's soooooooo much detailed and painstaking work. One wall piece could take days of full time effort t0 make look right scaled up. With one artist they would never be able to work on anything else, and it would still probably take years.

Have done a fair amount of pixel art I was awful dubious when I saw the first examples, cause they were clearly hand done, and it looked like a major project.

They would have to hire a full time team for a quite a bit of time to upgrade I imagine.

Oh I think plenty. Of the sort we have seen in recent times anyway. Deco stuff shouldn't take all that much time for a professional artist, and as we have seen there have been fairly consistent additions of new art in that vein. It's all scaled down stuff, it's really no biggie, though I personally think they seem to make zero effort to make it mesh with the game client. They could at least limit their pallets, but I digress.
Mobiles/equips... I would forget about ever getting an update on that stuff. Same goes for tiles probably if there just the ONE dude/dudette, as that would be a project that would actually take a fair amount of concentrated time. But that's still possible. Anything that's not a sprite or a major overhaul project is possible with one talented and hard working artist, I would imagine.

24 inch laptop!? That would be freaking huge. It wouldnt even be portable unless you were Andre the Giant... :p I heard of a few 19 inchers and even a 20 incher circa 2005 but really 17.x has been the standard max size since like 2001.

It's technically classified as a notebook, but yeah its big. If the video cable hadn't caught fire, I'd still be using it ;)

The screen sizes are maybe smaller in some cases but the actual resolution is getting higher.

My mobile phone has a higher resolution than the Classic Client gameplay window!

Sure does but mostly it just confirm to me that everything the devs have done for the past years and will continue to do do is bandages to keep veteran players busy any hope for a more modern fresh uo is pretty much out of the window

I'm with ya Herman. I was kinda holding out and waiting to see what that Art Update actually looked like. The news it is basically cancelled (or will take forever to complete) was very disappointing.

I have had a couple of friends express interest in the game, but they see it, they don't even get into it, just see it, and are like "Nah, thanks anyway".

It is so terribly dated compared to what modern games look like, and therefore what people are accustomed to, it is difficult to even get people to give it a chance. (Even if they do, UO has a vast and complicated set of game mechanic interactions that are neither intuitive nor consistent.) I have had more than one person say, "I'll just stick with playing a normal game", after testing out UO. Don't get me wrong, I like the scope and scale. I just wish it was consistent.

Most folk anymore want basically the game to hold their hand. They lack the imagination or drive to play UO since well there aren't a series of quests to lead you from one "level" to the next and tell you everything you need to do. Since well you don't "need" to do anything... It's all about what you like. There is no set path... no "proper" anything. Sure there are "best" of this or that but again that's a matter of opinion... you ask what's the best template for a Sampire? And you'll get 330 different answers. Same with templates for Tamers, Archers, etc... It's just a matter of opinion.

But yes mostly no one gets past the graphics. Or they joke about how bad it is. But they don't give UO half a chance because of how it looks. Though since I got the new LED HDTV I'll say UO looks a lot better. Now when they come in my room they are like ...... Is that your game Mom? ...... yeah.... Oh wow..... it looks different. No it's the same game. Oh... It looks better. ....... Well I sure hope it looks better for what I spent on the TV. Though watching old non-hdtv or old movies from CD's on it they look super grainy. And sadly this thing is so sharp that often CGI stuff can look.... "weird" on it. Though I will say my stand-by test for how pretty something looks hooked to my PC is to watch the movie Avatar on it and THAT looks freaking amazing on here. Sadly though I'm in need of a new PC since mine is getting up there in age it's not doing so well anymore at things. But I'm not likely to afford a new PC till I quit UO or win the lottery...

Or start a kickstater campaing to develop a new high res client!

this kind of not what kickstarter is about. Its for startups, not for a company with the wealth and resources of EA.

If anything we should start a kickstarter to buy UO from EA!!

I'm in for that as long as they do it much like they are doing Landmark. Where they are completely OPEN to idea's from players. Where the communication is daily and the DEV's do play... And for us who started in Alpha they actually consider us as being "on the dev team".

Somewhat... I don't care about PvP..... but it is much like that concept with Landmark. Though I will say that was how it was marketed but since SOE just got hit with being sold to some Daybreak whatever company and they pretty much gutted and cut the head off of the EQ Franchise.... I'm rather curious as to how it will survive and thrive or wilt and die. Time will tell I suppose.
