Just one of UO's little oddities.

Started one of my newer characters training lockpicking. It soon became apparent that I was going to need a large amount of lockpicks as the breakage rate is fairly high. So logging in my Tinker I made some. I then saw that if I used 200 ingots with a weight of 20 stones I finished up with 200 lockpicks weighing 200 STONES. So in some mystical UO manner they have performed the impossible and gained mass. As my prospective thief cannot carry that much it was then I realised that if my thief only carried a dozen picks he was carrying in his pockets the equivalent of a fully grown man. My Tinker in carrying the 200 to a chest was carrying the equivalent of 3 HORSES. These picklocks are certainly no lightweight article they dont weigh just a pound but 14 POUND each. How is my thief supposed to work quietly, probably in reduced visiblity, carrying bloody great lumps like that around?. Perhaps the idea is that if you fail to pick the lock you break the door down with them instead.

There has always been weight issues in the game that didn't make sense. For instance 1000 metal iron ingots weight less than 1000 blank scrolls..ok so 1000 "iron" ingots weigh less than paper??? Really? It's just an example how the previous Devs never really looked at weights as an issue. I mean ok ingots you have to gather..scrolls you buy. So when you look at it in relatively if it were opposite it would take FOREVER to gather ingots as most of your time would be running or recalling back to bank it. Which in my eyes would have made more sense..but it is just a sneaky way to implement the "easier" button all the Care Bears wanted. Now with lockpicks, that is a crappy predicament that your in. I know training it by doing chests is more "fun" as you get loot and what not..but I suggest making a new character on a trial account with 50 tinker 50 carp..make a trapped box..work it to 70 make another..and on the main account with 100 tinker make another. And train off those boxes and use the EC to make macros to lockpick/re lock those boxes..it is a much more boring method, but it works. And hey if you get bored go out and do a few chests just to make it worth your time.

Yeah I think from memory I popped a mythic token and then 2x 5.0 sots. I find myself doing this for most skills these days as I just don't have the time for the boring grind. I have 120 taming and never even tamed an animal!
I think I started taming at 90 when tokens came out and was like Ya know what I'm doing this! I got to 90.4 with an alacrity, and said screw it and bought pinks lmao! So I think I tamed about 2-5 creatures

I got to Legendary Taming (mostly) the hard way. I got to 119.4 and ate a .5 to 119.9. Then made 120 on a Kir-in! IT TOOK FOREVER!! LOL. But it was fun, and I "Farmed" greaters in Destard to find a few nice ones! WOOT!

first I don't think "stone" weight in UO does not equal to "pound" weight
next, just because you use xxx weight in ingots to make an item may not necessarily equal the end weight because perhaps you are adding in other materials not accounted in the "required" resources to make it.

Also consider that 10 arrows equal one stone and one arrow equals one stone. Come to think of it. One arrow is one log. 10 logs goes to ten boards which in turn goes into 10 shafts. Hmmm....

Loads of oddities like that my guess is that the ingots are magically infused to weigh less than one would expect. .. and wood in UO is a precious commodity and therefore the Boards weigh a bunch more and make far less than you would think. .. and that has to be part of why you can't recycle wooden items like you can IRL.

Traditional "stoneweights" from Europe range from about 3kg to 8kg, depending on the region (not even uniform within countries even where countries were tiny pre-1800), and depending on what was being weighed (for example, the "stone" we think of most readily was the 14 lb stoneweight used for livestock such as horses, and there was actually a SECOND stone weight used for processed animal meats (often different between animal types) after slaughter, as the second, smaller, weight allowed for a good approximation of the same number of stoneweight live or dead (since the slaughtered animal would be minus most its internal organs, hide, head, and hooves).

UO's stones appear to be roughly 1 lb to 1kg, depending on how fantastic you want the setting to be (compare weapon and armor weights to their real world counterparts. Chain shirts weigh about 30-40 lbs in real life, and swords 10 lbs or less depending on type). So there's no hard and fast conversion as some stuff will always be too heavy or too light without a massive item revamp.

But, if you think lockpicks are bad for instantaneous weight gain going from 0.1 to 1 stone, what about polearms, maces, mauls and war maces, that don't stack?

They aren't really arrows so much as wooden missiles. That's why they are so deadly!

And to get specific, the arrows and bolts do not have a stone or metal head to it. Or at least none that we add to the shaft. So it is a sharpened missile of death!

I have always found it very funny how it is easier to train magery by equipping a fast -29 weapon and whacking things around instead of casting.
I made to GM magery on my very first character by poking undead at New Haven with a sharp stick. :p

Plants.... resource making plants weigh one stone, even thought you can take eight stones of seeds and eight stones of petals/thorns/leaves off them... and even after taking those 16 stones weight off them they still weigh one stone....

As a side note, if you use a set of crafted lockpicking training boxes you'll lose only a handful of picks and is very fast for training. Most shards should still have a training house set up. If you don't know of one on your shard you might want to ask on your shard's forum.
Good luck!

Yet another reason why this game has turned into a pile of crap. And yet incredibly you say it with some pride. May as well just have 120 taming <add to cart>, 120 Magery <add to cart> , 120 imbuing <add to cart> etc etc. If zero to legendary can be done by not investing a single second in the skill then whats the freaking point.

I don't know after working up 6 or 8 tamers I'm getting a bit tired of it and like the "instant" success.

Problem is that the instant gratification is available to all so you may as well make the prodo shards like TC and be able to set your skill levels. If you can Legendary a skill from zer0 without ever having to use it then whats the point?

It would be really good if the game closely resembles reality but if it did there would be no magic or dragons. I just ignore such skewed stuff and chalk it up to magic.
