One good thing about UO on steam will be that steam gives a player online count. Very interested to see what kind of numbers UO is putting up.
I just saw DOTA2 had 450k people online right now and 1 million at its peak today

I think steam will give us numbers but only new players who have downloaded the game through steam will be reflected in those numbers

We will probably see a shed load of people playing the free trial and it will be impossible to say how many of those stumped up the cash to continue playing.

Yeah I think that's how it works...so the numbers are going to be WAY off because I know I don't run the game through Steam..though it would be better because you can see what your friends are doing..STALKERS FTW! lol but the Steam platform as well as the steam groups are a really cool thing and I HOPE that once UO is on Steam everyone that plays runs it through there...but that's not very likely.

I for one will not run UO through steam, as the other games ive tried to run through it do not play as well as by itself. I love UO being on steam though, its a great marketing stand point.

At face value you would think so. But in reality it will do diddly squat because of UOs myriad of show stopping problems. It will be a laughing stock.

show stopping problems? Pretty sure the game hasnt stopped the show in 17 years... Any new players wouldnt have a clue about any of UOs problems or bugs. Its only the advanced players that notice them. So at face value yeah i think Steam will be a great tool for UO, mainly because UO has so much stuff that does work on a regular basis that we as advanced players take for granted. We only seem to notice the things that dont work. How about all the stuff that does work?

Oh come on. Take a step into reality. Zero customer service. Compromised payment service. No new player experience to speak of. Bugs galore. Hackers all over the place. Dupers. Scripters. The most griefers of any game ive ever played. And to top it all paying a monthly subscription for a 17 year old game with all these problems and more. Steam will do FA for UO. It needs a complete overhaul to bring in new players (which isnt going to happen), or drop the monthly fee.

Heh, and yet through all of that you are still playing... Do me a favor and make a new toon. See how many bugs you encounter just walking around the game and trying to raise your skill like a new player would... last time i checked killing a mongbat in the forrest of haven worked perfectly fine.

And you can bet that a couple of weeks on a trial account would be enough to convince almost all potential new players that it simple wasnt worth a monthly subscription. And the odd one that did decide it was worth the bucks probably wouldnt make it past the account management ordeal. Youre deluded if you think UO's attraction for new players wouldnt be vastly overshadowed by the nature of its format, players, TOS, customer service and price. Its a dodo waiting to happen.

State of the game is irrelevant. While there is a subscription tied to the game; the majority of the steam enthusiasts will ignore in favor of the hundreds of f2p games available on steam with newer gaming engines.

Oh Im sorry. I wasnt aware that posting on stratics required an active UO account. Many long time players still post here as they still take an interest in the game and hope to one day return if things change. And you do seem the type who gets easily confused. Pot, Kettle, Black.

It's true, it's very, very unlikely that being on Steam will provide any boost in subscribers.

Even if you ignore the fact that UO is ancient and requires a sub fee, there is almost NO information given to new players, most shards are dead, and if they can manage to figure out how to play and get to Luna they'll look and see massively inflated prices on anything worth using while the stuff they kill drops 200 gold. That's very encouraging to new players, I tell you.

Steam only counts people who have the steam client running and launch a game via steam.

Off the top of my head I can immediately think of about a dozen players who I know who wouldn't even know what Steam even is. And I cannot imagine how many people I don't know who play this game and don't know what Steam is. Thus, the original post to this thread is useless, as Steam will not give us an even remotely close to accurate idea of how many players are active.

Well, Steam gives online count of people using Steam version of the game. If there were 800 people playing UO, and 75 of them were using Steam for it, Steam would state there are 75 people playing UO.

Regardless of what Broadsword& Steam do, with a possible exception of incredibly successful F2P, you can be sure UO will never have so many Steam players that it would end up on Steam's top-100 lists. If I recall correctly, Steam doesn't provide numbers beyond this. There are several thousands of games in Steam now.

I can't easily imagine a scenario where Steam would suddenly be required to play UO.

Yes. Without a doubt more griefers than any other game. And I've played a lot of games.

UO seems to attract the extremes of the player base. In my 15 years of playing I've met some of the best people of any game I've played. But by the same token I've bumped into more scumbags than any other game too.

Maybe it's just more obvious these last few years as all that's left are the diehards and the dupers/griefers/scripters.

Sorry ender. Sarcasm doesn't come across well via a forum post. You were right with your initial thought.

I've been playing sota alpha for a while now. Monthly subs are an outdated model even for new games never mind a game of UOs age. Damn shame as with a massive influx of players and micropayment revenue it could go from strength to strength.

The good thing about SoTa is even though it ftp with micro transactions..there is nothing that they sell that is "game breaking" it makes you elite. It just makes the game easier for you, but all is attainable in game. So that's a refreshing take on the whole micro transaction thing. Plus the game is looking nicer and nicer every release. No matter what the naysayers say..it's going to be an awesome game/story

I would like to know more about the possibility of linking stratics and steam accounts. *edit* I found this in the profile section along with other types of accounts to link like FB, etc.

Does launching UO through Steam feel like a long shot? Yes, it does. And yet, with zero advertisement, and no box sales, having a marketing presence somewhere seems like a good idea. I am enjoying a title I picked up on the super duper cheap last fall and the system itself, and the community seem pretty cool.

If the Dev team can figure the player experience and intro thing out, and create some milestone achievements, periodically put game time on sale via tokens in the steam store, I think there is a real opportunity for some small growth.

I just hope I can get UO as a Steam game, have it show me as in-game (without adding it as a non-Steam game) and track my hours, without an additional payment. Not sure how that would work as Steam games either cost money or are free to play.
