Yes, we have a great community. Lots of friendships, lots of very expensive items, but like @Assia Penryn said - it's about the experience. You will also find that a few of us are avid pvper's as well...

There are many, many things no matter what your financial means.
My suggestion is pick a topic or theme that interests you and work on collecting the theme. There are people who collect weapons... those related to a certain skill like smithing, ones related to dragons, only items that are gold in color and stuff like drinks, cookies, juka items, etc.
The themes are truly endless and can inspire you in your collecting.

Everyone has their idea of what they want to collect. Some of us started collecting a few things and over many years and they've added up. Some have only recently started collecting. Some of us collect random things and have lots of stuff from many different sets of collections. Others of us have completed or are trying to complete a full collection. (EM's in the years since AOS have done lots of sets of rares - like the Crux Ansata set were many events over the span of 6months.) So - I do not have the whole Crux suit - i dont want it... BUT I do have the Crux Helm for my hat collection!
Me - I collect Hats - If it goes on your head on your PPD, i probably own it... That means sometimes i pay a few million for a a few semi-rare hats or close to a billion for one hat. All depends on what it reads, how it looks on PPD, and how rare it is (1 of 10, 1 of 1, etc...)
But like you've already previously mentioned... It's about the community - Lots of good people here.
You should hope over to Izumo for the Rares Festival. A lot of good community all in one place - AND - A lot of rares available forsale and up for auction. Be warned though - Items will not be cheap! The cooler it is, the bigger the payout... but you already know that!

Have you watched pawn star or the pickers, where they visit old people and their house is FULL of stuff? Items collected over many years...
I don't dare to start, as I'm fearful of viral infection into the sink hole. But you guys are so lethal poison!
I think ima buy the Crux suit from Nails, as my first collectors items.
Least i can bank sit with it and show off, rather than having it locked down in my house and no one sees it.
I suppose for some it does appear as if they are a part of hoarders... hah. Most of my house is full of backstock for my vendors with only a small portion being taken up with my remaining collection.
