My Problem With Recent Gifts In General

I haven't been really seeing items I feel fits a medieval theme, which this game is. Nor do they fit the established themes. The new bars don't fit with the one you get from house customization. The new fireplace doesn't seem to fit in with anything. etc. A stone fireplace would have been nice. The coffee machine looks like it's from Macy's lol. These aren't just new events, this kinda thing has been going on for a long time here and there and it would be nice if UO could pull it together and put some real thought into this. I wonder if they're stealing art from Sim City lol. This stuff would be perfect for that. Oh well....

Its either no difference in them, all 7 chars get the same - so its not much to trade for or make the game interactive. Just storage occupying stuff...

I think the recent bars actually fit the theme better than the house customization ones. Some other vet rewards and gifts - the vet rugs, bathtubs, etc - I kind of agree with you. The coffee maker is a cool idea, but it's going to be hard to place.

My bigger problem is that how gifts are given; they're worthless the day they come out. Give us a ticket, and let us pick just one per ticket. It's less storage until they're needed, and there's not gigantic numbers on the market. Snow piles and signs came from tickets; I still need more, and they still have value. Even Santa statues have a little value. But doing the math, on just xferable shards, I'm going to have something close to 2500 coffee makers. :eek: Even if you only have a single account, you could have over a hundred... That doesn't exactly help generate an economy. It just makes new stuff to store until it's added to the cleanup list.

Also, the perspectives on most recent items seems off, starting with the plants from the 16th anniversary bags. The borders around the plant boxes and the angles of most every item seems off, compared to the rest of UO.

I agree wholeheartedly. Tho the sandstone fireplace can fit quite well with some other deco items. Besides the one item nothing seems to fit. It is either not suited for medival deco or is simply way to big.

Yeah even if the gifts were from Mesanna, Kyronix, etc it would add a little something.

I like the idea of picking things, but in this case I don't think I'd need many coffee pots or grinders lol. That was a nice thing with the snow globes and statues and such, lots of variety and chances for trading. Something like a generic new painting with "A snowy scene of Trinsic painted by Messanna" or something along that line where you could get a lot of variety out of it.

Personally I would love it if they made the normal holiday gifts, and also a new quest like the Doom thing that lets you get a special item with your characters name on it for each holiday.

I think the grass and snow tiles were great, as well as such things as snow piles, as you actually can use a TON of them, given the right house design. That creates demand. I keep asking; I'd love to see some of the following:
* desert/sand tiles
* cave walls
* mountain walls
* cave floor tiles
* cave dirt path tiles
* dirt tiles
* 'mound of earth' piles (like the one in front of the WBB)
* water tiles
* dye tubs for things specialty things such as lavafalls, sandstone rubbles, etc. (admittedly, this would prob be a better vet reward than gift)
* pond and shoreline tiles
* cliff walls (like the sides of Magincia)
* grass/dirt and grass/path transition tiles
* etc. etc. etc.

Plus, I was in Europe this last summer. Some cathedrals I saw had gorgeous painted or mosaic tile floors. Perhaps they could do up a bunch of gothic-style floor tiles; give one tile from one of those to each char. Now we'd have to collect and trade to complete those floor pictures, if we wanted to use them.

What a great idea! I'd love to see something like this given out as gifts, especially after the popularity of the snow and grass tiles. Maybe the Dev's will consider this for some time soon :)

I like your suggestions and I too suggested such things... but was told by one of the frequent posters here that stuff like that only benefits those with Castles and Keeps, which I said was BS I've used them on other builds, especially the grass to hide teleporter tiles. Water tiles that could do the same and be walked over would be Wonderful!

As for the gifts I'm not going to complain.. 1) it's a gift and I'm grateful for it... 2) I love the new box colors and designs, 3) Malag's wife LOVES Coffee!!!!!! So he must have this!

However I too prefer more "period" things. I also much prefer the gift certificate to choose your own suitable gift. I would like to see perhaps some new clothes... A lovely new dress... New Suit... Santa hats might be fun to wear... We've had many things but I'd kinda like perhaps a Gooseberry Pie... A pipe... a candy dish... A star... An Angel... A large Christmas Sack... Yule logs. A nice X-Mas welcome mat... Holiday light posts with garland and jewels and maybe a nice red bow on it... Old round post style.

I still like the idea I had on the other post I started about idea's.. and that would be taking the Vet reward flaming head that blows fire and have it blow ice or snow... and it might freeze you for a moment.... or make your character shiver and say "Brrrr!" you could put on your door.

Honestly .... I don't care what others do. I don't care what they wear, don't care what they ride.... I DO care how they act. If they are disruptive, harassing, or obnoxious... rather tends to "ruin" my gameplay experience. But then I put them on ignore if they get really obnoxious so all is well.

What some of you have talked about the 16th anniversary items was something we all complained about numerous times and I don't think that particular artist ever had a clue about perspective. They tried to fix it several times but it really really sucked and they attempted to "fix" the cakes and Silver Saplings a few times... but it stunk they are STILL VERY out of perspective. I won't even use any of the vases/planters that they gave us because they are so grossly out of perspective it just looks TERRIBLE. I'm always hoping that one day the "new" art guy will put his hands on them and fix them but not holding my breath.

Again I would prefer some stuff that is more "period" to the Renaissance type era or the Dark Ages... but we can't say that UO is "based" in either of those era's as neither of those era's had "magic"... real dragons, unicorns etc... We also have the Juka and their Golems, Elves and Dryads, Pixies... Demons etc... Now while they may have "feared" such things in those era's they didn't really "exist" though I do beg to differ with Demons as those always exist even today. Anyway... I would rather keep from "modernizing" UO. I don't want to see refrigerators, microwaves, cars, tanks, etc... Though I'd be happy with a few versions of the toilet and a working sink.... one that actually SERVES as a water source. I don't think that in medieval times or whatever that they had a freaking watertrough in the stinking Kitchen. I don't want one in mine.

I'm still missing my broom, mop and waterbucket!!!! I KNOW they had those. I'd kinda like to see some haystacks as well...

I'm also waiting for the stockade... we need one. I said that we should have one at every town near the bank... And on Halloween when your trick or treating the "Trick" would be that you would get placed in the stockade and other players could come along and throw tomatoes or other things at you. And you'd stay there for a short time and then get released. Would be kinda fun... somewhat less annoying than getting sent to a random moongate...

I agree, Have 30 cool items people want and make them 1 per account! Imagine the revenue they will get by people activating accounts trying to get pixels! I think ill get the resume ready to send to broadsword!!

For a 20th year vet reward I'd like a Kilrathi Bloodfang as a "mount!"

There was one in Ultima VII, so why not UO? :devil:
I'd settle for a pack of Marlboros but no red

While I have a keep, my grass and snow tiles (close to 2000 of them) are all used at my 18x18's. If anyone says they're just for keeps and castles, then they're simply... wrong. :D

In all honesty, I think there's enough grass and snow already. I had to hit every shard to find enough for my projects, but they are out there. Adding something that generates new ones would simply devalue all the old ones - and that'd be exactly the opposite of what I was talking about earlier. You don't generate an economy by flooding the shards, giving every player a hundred of something when they'll only need one or two. You also kill any existing economy by taking a widget that exists in somewhat constrained quantities, and which has demand - thus a market for that widget. Suddenly adding in new identical widgets in potentially unlmited quanties won't grow that original market; instead it simply will kill it, and devalue *every* widget.

So you say but why oh why does EVERYTHING in this game have to be about greed and making a profit? Can we not be cut some slack somewhere? I'm overly fed up with everything turning into having to control this market and keep this and that "rare" to satisfy folk... I think they need to stop catering the game to the rares community and start realizing that other people who aren't into making a buck or having every last drop play this game too. There are loads of us who play who just want a memento of an event. I participate in something and actually care about it and just would like something to remember the fun event by... I don't want to be harassed for enjoying it... and I don't appreciate having to deal with the greedy SoB's that just come for the drop and spend most of their time complaining about the event and don't care what is going on because they just care about the bottom dollar of what it's worth and think it's a "waste of their time" to be there if their isn't going to be a drop... and that makes me honestly want to go back to when they were adamantly against having anything drop ever.

Sure I like to collect things... and yes I think it's awesome to have "rare" colored boxes or "Rare" colored gifts or things of that nature... but that should be where this RARE BS stops. It should NEVER have been brought into the EM events. And as far as I'm concerned if the EM's need to give out something as a "drop" or whatever it ought to be a clicky so that even those who participate in a healing aspect without doing damage at all .... can get one too... I'm sick and tired of hearing how healing does get you stuff when evidence proves that it does NOT. We have one member of our community who does nothing but heal... she almost never gets a drop.

And I'm fed up with everything having to be about worth. Can we not just enjoy the game?

Placing a value on items in UO is a play style. We don't all play UO that way of course.

Every item in UO should be attainable by every player without having to pay huge wads of gold or buy from a duper. Make it NEARLY impossible to get rare items, but make it POSSIBLE. Put up a museum, place on display rare items with player owner name and date, that way those who have already spent enormous sums on rares are immortalized forever in UO, then open the gates to all being able to pursue a rough and rocky road to obtain those rares.

Items in the Origin store other than game time and upgrades should be available to get in game in some way. Perhaps by logging in each day and running to a non recall location and ringing a bell? You'd have to keep your accounts paid that way. Do that for points, use the points like cash at the Origin store.

I do LOVE the previous post about snow ellies dropping snow tiles as random loot. I don't need them myself but it just seems RIGHT, like the natural place snow tiles would come from.

This thread was about the new gifts. It would be nice if we could dye them.

No card saying To Chesapeake from Mesanna or To New Magincia from Damn-It-Nar.... And I created 50+ characters to make sure I got all their names... *Is Crushed*

No more gift card until we get a gift card album to hold them all that works as a bod book five become one.

But I understand where you are coming from. I redid some characters on shards with better names, and no named after char items this go around. The variety of the new gift boxes make up for it I think.

:)

Oh yes thanks Devs!

Whoever said that those needed to be rare? I simply said that they should retain what value they have, because there is a limited supply. Every single character got three snow tiles and three grass tiles. In my opinion, that is enough. Simply the fact that people have so many of these that there was a real need for them to be made stackable should give you some idea of just how many exist. I think what you are really saying is they have some value more than the 10 gold an NPC may charge, and you are unwilling to pay that minimal amount.

Doesn't mean people sell them and make them available.... I happen to know several who chuck everything they get pretty much the instant they get it... Decreasing the amount you think is out there... I know several more who when going to an idoc throw anything worth points... regardless. Decrease the amount of what's left. Just look at the 2 or 3 times we've gotten Heritage Tokens as a gift... and you wonder "Why?".... Because they got so hard to find those who needed/wanted ladders for their Keeps/Castles couldn't get them. So the tokens got regifted. Not wanting to get regifted I'm with the one who suggested getting the snow tiles from snow Eles etc.. nice idea. I would like water tiles from Water Eles. Lava tiles we get from champ spawns. Perhaps some of the other needed/desired tiles could spawn somewhere similar. But I'd be very happy having them as gifts... water, sand, leaves, dungeon walls, etc...

First off, Thank you for the gifts! I do like the new box art (guilty I'm a gift box junky, though not the pricey neon pattern jobs) I very much like the "open wrapping paper" look, the wooden or unbleached paper look. I think with a gift that is one per character though, they could have done 1 beverage maker, PS book, candy cane (maybe a stick candy version), and one box with the grinder, PS book, stick candy or foil wrapped chocolate snow flake or something the only shards this would hurt would be Seige and is it Mugen? one character there. Maybe out of 14 characters I'd have not gotten a 1 or the other item, but quite likely I'd have gotten 1 of each item in the mix for each house.

Secondly, I like the coffee, tea, hot chocolate thing, and I know not everyone role plays, but for years any NON drinking folks who wanted to participate in tavern nights or such themed events got pitchers of water or milk. As trivial an silly as it maybe I'll grow my coffee plants and such just for the fun of actually being able to hand someone a mug of coffee! Now those of us who are old enough or close to it and remember the 1960s can do coffee houses, read poetry, play our lutes, snap our fingers Ha!

Something like that may make sense, as long as it isn't a guaranteed drop. I just don't think that NPCs should be selling them outright. Nor do I think that anything being in limited supply is due facto a bad thing. However, wouldn't that mean we also need to add grass elementals? :)

The gifts overall are cool. I havent figured out how to make coffee yet but ive not spent much time yet. However, the best christmas gifts ever were when they dropped random tokens in the gift boxes (not the heritage ones).

I still have silver platters, lobster dinners, candles etc pouring out my ears.

Hmm... Poison eles drop... Those greenish stone tiles from the house floor menu? Ice eles drop snow piles? Then to make it harder to script, have "the elemental spirit" flee between dungeons? So fire else in Fire, ice and snow eles in Ice, etc.? Put the final battle where you trap the boss in the tram star room; have him drop star and void tiles as semirare drops? Then each else type also drops a "fire/snow/ice/lava/poison/earth/etc spirit core". Cooks use a grinder on all the cores. Alchemists make an elemental paste with those. Then carps make empty tubs (like the ones from Del stables). Combine paste with tub, get a tile/lavafall dye tub. Tub has x charges; to recharge, add more paste?

We should be able to GROW grass!

Also, the best gifts were the kittens. It's all downhill from kittens.
LOL.... well I liked the kitties I would have liked them 100X more if they roamed about your house freely instead of slept constantly in their bed. I would have preferred some sort of bed or box or something that "Tethered" a pet to your house. Where you go out .... select your one slot pet type.... be it bunny, kitty, dog, spider, bat, bug, whatever... and it is "bound" to where you lock down it's "Home" bed box whatever.... and that in turn allows it to roam freely about your house but not leave. Act like a normal animal.... if you set it on "guard" it will bark, hiss, growl whatever at anyone who goes past or enters. If you tell it to "Stay" it will sit or whatever there till you release it. But if you tell it to go lay down it returns to the box, bed whatever stays there... and if you tell it to go play... it just wanders about the house. Perhaps a new setting could be allowed for doors and teleporters to not allow pets or allow them. Anyway it would be more fun to have a much more "interactive" house pet. Though there is something to be said about letting sleeping dogs lie.

It's something I've suggested probably 10 times over the last 5 or 6 years. Not holding my breath. But I for one would LOVE it.

Ok the problem with kitties roaming the house is feed water and clean up the poops. Let's let sleeping kitties lie! Or...

Pet shop owner templates! Need merchant skills at least and animal lore, possibly veterinarian skill?

Allow small city shops to be rented out as pet shops to players. Tamers can tame and sell pets to shop owners or be the shop owner.

Pet shops sell pets and the items they need, like kitty litter, which is made from granite mined up by miners and ground up by alchemists.

Rare color pets can sometimes be seen and tamed in the wild.

Cooks can make pet foods, tailors, pet beds and cute pet outfits.

Carpenters craft pet houses and cages.

There was discussion of breeding animals in the past that would fit perfectly.

These pets cannot be attacked but can die from neglect if not fed daily, bathed weekly and taken to a vet yearly.

Extra special pets can be sold at the Origin store.

Kittens puppies birds snakes turtles lizards. OH MY!

Of course I still do still want High Seas II, Pirates on Monkey Island. which has several quests, some for pirate titles and pirate clothing, but mostly for a tiny monkey companion that can help fire cannons and go fetch things for us.

I don't want the tiles to drop on every kill. Random drops like you get with the efreets dropping the demon bone armor pieces.I want to sit here for a hour or so wondering when I'll get the next drop. Ok ok one more kill, I'm outta here, and this would be like the 20th time I've said it for the night.
