Devs can u please make it your next priority to remove gold checks from the game

Im sure there is a better way. With the amount of gold I have I will not be able to store all of the 60k piles across 3 accounts.

The plan:

Gold coin piles can still be made for deco reasons mostly.

Checks going gone. Not sure how checks being used as a door mats or stored on a beetle handled. Could see checks placed in bankbox converted to new money system for a short time. Anything out / not converted become a paper sheet deco. A must to not anger white check holders. And those that want current check as a keep sake.

Gold becomes a number that is account only use. Any character on that account can burn the gold or add to the ammount. Any character on the account can purchase through trade window with players and buy things from player & NPC vendors.

Killing a monster. Gold looted as normal. BoS gold is added to account total. Or gold that is of looting rights that would be auto added to account total. Neither method slows down gold farmers no more then recharging a BoS.

Container earned gold still as a goin form. Covers quest backpack drop bags and Tmap, Paragon, Champ & SOS container gold earned in coin form.

Whatever the new system. If the game is not policed and the TOS not enforced. The BS will continue and gold sinks just hurt honest players. Track trace and bann main holding accounts would curb the ignorance real fast. Best gold sink in the game. Account held gold and vendors richer then god would be the best target to track for honest play. Those that want to be in gold sales and not be ion the radar would have to open multiple accounts. Players also need to stop feeding the stupidity.

This is the second time I have seen you mention this. I am curious what you are seeing on a daily based in the way of gold duping that is angering you this much. I know there is a lot of gold in game but are you seeing more than that? I am not trying to bait you, I am sincerely interested and feel I am not seeing something that you are?

Duping will still exist, if not checks, then high value items. In fact, I have been told duping hi end items to sell already happens more than duping a check.

Removing checks from the game will eliminate duping about as efficiently as random ore eliminated script mining...

I would rather they work on fixing bod books to have the same useability as SoT and SoA books, can be used while in container, etc etc.
Make turnin points acount wide across all shards, not just useable by the one char that turned them in.

What's the push to mess with the one system we have that works?

just being realistic, 100% of the gold could be removed from the game, and the "prices" wouldnt change a whole lot on the higher end stuff. it would all just be done for cash.

whether i agree with this or like it is beside the point, its just the way it is.

before an arguement is made about the rlm thing, keep in mind your essentially allowed to buy gold off stratics by selling game time codes. so the rlm thing is here to stay between that and availability of UO store items to sell for gold.
again, not saying its right or wrong, but just a reality.

i dont think gold has been massively duped since 2004-6ish. i could be wrong, but theres so much gold already that even duping 100 billion wouldnt affect the game economy much at all.

How is it that the OP knows that gold dupes are being used? While inflation seems to be a issue in the game I'm not sure if it's duping or just people pretending to trade gold for items but really using plain old dollars....

So wait..so you can farm non stop with zero chance of losing your gold? How about you have a ledger of sorts that holds gold and weight and can be deposited but not broken into stacks. And on death a ticket drops to your body that has a timer of 60 seconds before it poofs..where then it can be looted and deposited into your ledger..the idea of picking up gold at a harrower and just having it go into an invisible account without having to run it out is weird..think about the 24/7 gold farming bots that will pop up..

i know it was being worked on for a while, the one dev who had come up with a solution left or something and his work was lost / abandoned. maybe someone who remembers the details of this could clarify.

the major problem encountered so far was how to do the system, the first few preliminary ideas from mesanna could actually be duped easier than checks (duping the entire "checkbook") obviously, this would be a totally awesome change to have account bound gold but it also one that HAS to be done right. any slip-up, any overlooked possible exploit and people could possibly be exploiting the system for who knows how much. if its just a number and not physical checks, trillians rather than billions would be likely if there was any possible weakness in the new system.

im looking forward to account bound gold, but it HAS to be done right.

P.S. and i agree THP event item prices are insane, if they make myself or people happy tho then i guess it is worth it.

leave everything as it is but make your bank be able to virtually hold a balance in none-seen way. of which you can convert that balance to checks or gold on demand as normal. and you can buy and sell outside your bank and it would just access your balance.

I know the devs really want this so I wouldn't worry. I sure it's gonna come as soon as they can get a grip on it. I'm interested in what happens with that 10 gold when I kill a mongbat? Does it just poof into my account? That's sounds like camper heaven. Anyway I would hope they would allow us to keep piles of gold for decorating. Just make it an item and have no value for purchasing. Just musing this over it seems like a major task, gold is tied into EVERYTHING. It could cause real problems. Lots of old buried code there. In general I'd prefer they got a grip on duping and start burning houses. I've never duped anything and have no idea how it's done, other than rumors back in the day. You'd think after all these years I would have done it once by accident. lol Anyway, I can imagine what stuff will cost if there's no limit on what can be charged. If you able to store unlimited amounts of gold on your books, I could see rare prices go through the roof. For the most part there's currently a hard cap of say 175 mill or so for rares. Unless you want to do a lot of messing around. If that high end cap gets removed things could get really interesting. I really like the idea in general, but I'm pretty sure it's not all going to be sunshine. If "checkbooks" are one item that opens up a lot of storage and server load. Just saying I don't see this as easy as flipping a switch. It would seem everything in the game that accepts gold would have to be considered. I have no idea, lol. I just got this gut feeling really bad things could happen, lol.

I and others proposed getting rid of checks or at least creating a checkbook like bank-account to hold gold years ago. Usually only to be blasted by everyone who hates changing their precious game. Like checks define UO or something.

I never proposed it to curb duping but mostly to more easily facilitate safely purchasing high value items or trading/buying castles and such worth more than 125 million.

The devs deleted about 50 billion in duped gold from Pacific a few months ago, their EM accidentally mentioned it in general chat a few days later. So it definetely does still happen, we just don't hear about it as often.

Looting and carrying gold should remain similar to the existing system for the stealing skill and PvP.

The way you 'collect' gold, (ie looting, quests, spawns etc) should stay the same, gold stacks to 60k as per normal and can be sent to the bank with BOS , dropped into the bank manually or locked down in your house. When the gold is deposited in the bank should it automatically 'disappear' and become an 'account balance' figure only displayed at the top of the container. There should be a time period , say 2-3 months, when existing checks can be deposited into the bank once the system comes into being, after that un-deposited checks become a deco item and should be non redeemable from that time on, that way people won't hold checks to dupe and then deposit.

There should be no change to the way the game is played and how money is obtained, just the way it is stored. If the account balance can be used across all chars on the same account then all the better, saves moving stuff around and having to transfer money between characters on the same account.

It would also be great if you could:

1) 'deposit' funds to your vendors from your account balance directly to save either dragging piles of gold to them or having some other 'account' buy something off a vendor to get money on it. Especially useful when setting up vendors for the first time.

2) transfer funds to another player directly in a trade window by typing in the 'amount' to transfer, ie person is trading/selling you a ethy unicorn, puts in the trade window and you can select $$ button on your side, type in the amount that is visible to both, then you both click the agree and the funds auto transfer and you get the item.

3) being able to use the account balance for donating gold to the library, zoo, etc with a $$ button to save dragging and dropping amounts or targeting checks as is current.

Iam 100% postive it happens still in huge numbers too...and iam also certain that the silly cash for gold prices are definatly fuelling the sky rocket to the moon event item and rare prices....while ever folks can buy mega cheap gold from the dupers then prices will keep going up and up and up...

to some folks a 50 dollars is a lot of money to waste.....to others its the sort of tip they leave at resturants when going out for a meal.....

This as got to be a priority number 1

Question about house decay. A friend of mine houses (four) started to decay. i seen them on Slightly warn. I Emailed him told them the condition he couldn't get on right away to refresh them i told him he should have a couple days. All four houses where gone in two days.

From Slightly warn to gone in two days? What happened to decay rates?

actually once house.goes idoc it just does not renew contract and decays.. don't have to wait out the money on it :)

I have a slightly more radical idea that relies on a very good method called "Let's try it and see what happens!"
Actually this would mean to stay to the tried and true. If - and only if - you allow yourself to think outside the box.
  1. Introduce silver coin checks of up to 1m
  2. Switch all NPC vendors to use silver coins and no longer accept gold.
  3. Block all Player vendors, meaning they no longer sell anything. This means the owners can take their time and decide on new prices. Once they are finished let them reopen their vendors by command.
  4. Open up the gold faucet - introduce a new bankster NPC at WBB that hands out gold in 60k piles without any limits (or maybe 1 pile every 5 seconds). So people learn very quickly that gold isn't worth anything any longer.
  5. Introduce new currencies to both player and NPC vendors. Let the player run vendors decide which currencies to accept. Take any resources from the game to count as a currency - silver coins, reagents, apples - even enchanted apples. Allow larger commodity checks. Choose about 20 or 30 different resources that will be allowed to act as a currency.
  6. In the beginning let all monsters that currently drop gold randomly drop any of the new currencies instead. A Mongbat that drops 21 black pearls, a Dragon that drops 1123 bones.
  7. Closely watch which currency is favored most on each shard (on player run vendors).
  8. Once a critical mass is established - i.e. if 60% of player run vendors accept stackable sand, then slowly the monsters will mostly (95%) drop that resource and it will also become the primary resource accepted by NPC vendors.
  9. Keep the other resources as randomly given loot - that means: 95% of all dragons will drop around 1100 bones. The other 5% will drop 1100 black pearls or 1100 silver sapling seeds etc.
  10. 5% of all NPC vendors will randomly demand some special currency that is not the main currency at the given time. That is subject to change on a daily basis or some funny ruleset.
  11. If at some point of time 60% of the player run vendors switch over to a new currency, monsters and NPC vendors will follow suit and use the aforementioned 95% rule for the new currency.
  12. Actually this one should be the first step: Stop all duping methods.
This will cause major chaos. A competition between all the currencies will start. A lot of items will suddenly find new owners. After some weeks or months people will slowly have chosen a new currency. On Atlantic people will mostly accept seeds from a silver sapling while Siege, Mugen and Catskills will rather stick to Fey wings.

Players that are hoarders might suddenly become rich over night once their beloved very special items are high in demand. And those who filled the characters of 20 accounts with gold checks... are left with nothing but useless paper.

To conclude - my method will mean loads of fun. It will create imbalance in the beginning. Imbalance might be a lot of fun actually! At the same time my method will enable the players to find a new balance. A balance that is always subject to change if a majority of the players changes the direction of things. You can hardly get a sandbox feeling that will be more true than that.

Sure why not screw those who got their gold legitimately and encourage more scripting for your barter system.

I would instantly close all of my accounts and not think twice about coming back.

I dont know man, I cringe at the thought of starting over.

I like the thought of adding value to items like those but not enough to outweigh losing the benefit of all the play time I put in to acquire that much gold.

I went back and did some reading. I was really disappointed when I realized that Mesanna actually did say that. I absolutely cannot believe, with all the systems in this game (direct gameplay systems) that need tweaked, adjusted, FIXED, etc., she is taking the whole team (4 people) and gonna work on tearing down one of the few working systems.

How about instead, we work on stabilizing house decay?
How bout instead, we fix lighthouses, because several people wasted a pick on them, and still lose their boats!
How about instead, we go about and finish the bank deco we were promised so long ago.

These things come to mind immediately, without any thought at all. I suspect that list could grow rapidly. Instead of all that work on changing checkes, just ban the damned dupers. And if the loss of accts from banning the dupers hurtst the bottom line, then we should be shut down anyway.

If I have pests in my garden,, I don't throw the garden away or move it, I get rid of the pests.

ps. I wouldn't argue the point, nor call anyone untruthful. But really, anyone sitting around with billions of duped checks is seriously stupid and should be banned. And that gold (if it is proven to be duped) deleted. I just don't see a reason to change the whole system, those dupers will just move on to the latest high $ item and dupe it instead *shrugs*

I made an account on Stratics, originally, to discuss the Fel/Trammel change when it was an announced certainty, eons ago. It amazes me that more than a decade later there are still people from UO (and you can bump into them here and there in forums for other MMO's or sandboxes around the net) still bitter about the change and still in denial that their own behavior in an open world pvp ruleset is what created the overwhelming player preference for the Trammel setting which effectually killed Felucca.

When I first joined UO, I didn't mind the threat of dying in the open world because when I first joined the game was primarily role players. By two or three years later, the only time you'd ever die in UO it would be to a guy in a jester hat with an alternating caps lock name with a reference to weed or kush or indo who was flying at your mining mule and then would corpsecamp him for fun for hours.

There's a big difference between functional open world pvp and simply accomodating the most extreme whims of sociopaths. UO simply utterly lacked the ability to structurally create the former without empowering the latter.

Please do away with the checks. I have attained my gold honestly, but the checks are taking up too much bank and house space. Please just give us a running bank balance. At the bank or somehow attached to our character makes little difference to me. Just delete the existing checks and add them to our balance as we deposit them!

If you ask me, there is absolutely no negative aspect in removing checks from the game. The contrary is true!

Let´s see: I have 100 Million pieces of gold DF and I want to go shopping Atlantic. So, what am I gonna do? I need a friend to trade 100 here for 100 there. Or I need a friend who transfers a bag with 100 from DF to ATL - because my oldest account is 9 years soon and it will take AEONS til I get this damned shard shields for myself (which is soooo unfair!). And in case the guy has no space on his transfer toon, I will have to buy - let´s say - a small soulforge for 100 on DF in order to make it liquid again on ATL, so that I can go shopping for - let´s say - a nice luck suit.

So, you see the problem? I need alot of work to get my gold moving and I have to rely on other people. If the gold was account-bound, I could play all shards, pay on all shards, farm on all shards. Imagine the re-viving effect for some smaller shards. Imagine, how this would boost trading. And the clou is: You would still make $$ with transfer tokens, because people would still have to Transfer items (even if they would not have to transfer gold).

And let me please point out one thing: I really dont care about gold piles and checks. Last time I looted a monster for gold must have been 5 years ago. Why should I collect 500 gold from a monster? What is 500 gold worth these days? Nothing. Even 5000 gold, well, even 50.000 gold. I wouldnt even try to pick it up - too much work for nothing.

BUT, people who love looting gold would profit from the change, too: They could pick it up and in the very situation, the gold pile falls in the BP it disappears and gets registered on your account. Wonderful for every gold-farmer, because you will never get an overload by 60k gold in your BP. Farming will be much more fun.

Ah, and look at the Trader Quest: I am carrying about 20k for a couple of tours. As soon as my gold is spent, I have to run to the bank and get a gold pile out of it, because the NPC-vendor tells me, I could not afford short pants for 200 gold. What the heck... So dumb!

So, Mesanna and the others will do something, they already promised. And I cant wait to see this happen.

@Eaerendil - I'm not so sure "account bound" is the way to go. Account bound on your home shard, perhaps, or possibly character bound might be a better option. Now, before you poopoo those options, consider the ramifications of making gold "account bound" and usable on any shard. What is there to prevent someone from making, transferring or using already viable characters on empty[ish] shards like maybe Lake Austin and script farming unattended and just raking in the gold? Heck, I can think of several ways to utilize the lesser populated shards to keep a steady stream of gold coming in. I'm pretty certain the people who would abuse and have a hey-day with such a system would think of really elaborate ways that my pea brain can't even comprehend! I think character bound might be the better way to go.

Hmmm... Maybe you are right. I am not one of these people creative enough to find ways to exploit the system. I just thought what I would like to have: Like an international creditcard you could use everywhere for shopping. As I am rather a shopper ;-)

But yes, there are many evil people out there always trying to develop evil things...

People don't even need to move to a "dead" shard. They hack and script on even the busiest shards without fear of getting banned. I've reported loads of script miners/lumberjacks and guess what.....? They are still going months later.
