I like how Bonnie got pissed and said free shards steal OUR ideas..but unfortunately free shards have had general chat years before osi, have non breaking crashes or dupes..maybe instead if bashing and just pushing it to the side, maybe they should adapt and see how they do some of things they do..just like in any business..I own a pizzeria, I don't claim the guy down the street trying to copy my style is just a thief and F him..I try to out do him and make my product better even if it means using some of his ideas..try not to be so proud Bonnie, anyone who asks any questions are trying to better the game. Not ruin it!
I didn't really get that response. The justification for free shards having some innovative systems (theoretically anyway) was that they stole their (official shards) work so it's easier. But... don't the devs ALSO have their own work? At worst they should be on the same footing, at best the official shards have the financial backing of subs to hire developers.

I think there ARE sensible reasons for why freeshards may have quality systems or content that we don't (primarily they are developing purely on passion, not as a job, and they also don't have any rules or bosses to deal with) but that wasn't a very good response IMO.

I could sit here and list tons more, but I didn't see it as imperative to do so..and for the record the only thing used from original OSI was the art. It was coded from the ground up(mechanics-wise) probably not even in the same programming language..UO has never been open source..sadly it's probably coded more efficiently..

Actually, the source for a shard was partially released in 2004 (I think that was the year) when they released a stand alone demo. It was reverse engineered into the original basis for at least one iteration of the free shards.

So, really, those shards have't been able to steal much more than artwork in ages.

I think one moderator is sufficient to ask a question and then follow up with conversation. There were many times I wanted the moderator to dig into an answer and interact. Also, for this sort of event, it could have all been prerecorded so there were no sound issues. In fact, a face to face discussion at the Broadsword studio might have worked better.
