State of UO address... huh?

Am I the only one who was disappointed by the broadcast last night? It wasn't a State of anything address... is was a (badly) scripted question and answer session where you couldn't even hear some of the answers (and honestly, you say he was lagging? REALLY? The problem is the guy needs to get a new microphone. To think you thought couldn't hear him because of lag? ugh)

Please join us for some exciting news as to what the team is up to and where we are going next.
------

Where was the exciting news? There was no mention of the new UI other then one of the answers to a question, and even then it was just an add on at the end of a sentence.

Where was the exciting news? where was any comments or statements about where we are going next?

Please join us for some exciting news as to what the team is up to and where we are going next.... evidently no where.

"We just need to get this publish out the door."

The team itself looks a bit frazzled, I think it is the work load, or the timing, or both. No telling what all is happening behind the scenes. I am sure they are all looking forward to a time in the near future when they can toss around ideas and begin working on something for the spring.

There were no questions about Halloween, or other holiday content. There was no prepared statement.

I do wish they had told us they were going to rely entirely on questions. I would have been more extensive, and more specific on issues that are important to me. But it is hard to ask really good and specific questions when you are just back and trying to remember or relearn a lot of the systems. For that I blame a lack of player interest or assertion.

I'm happy they had a Q&A but it was certainly not what I was hoping for. It would have been nice to have an actual state of the game address covering what they've done over the last year, how they feel those changes have worked out and a road map for what they're planning for the upcoming year.

I tried watching it, but I couldn't. Thank you for taking the time to do it, but from what I've been told... I wish there was less Q&A and more exciting 'what to expect and when' info. That would have been more reassuring.

Did not help the thread was locked as more questions could have been put forward. Typical Stratics attitude.
That thread was locked as per the instructions from the Producer as explained in the letter at the top of the thread. Questions could also be submitted within a specified time frame via facebook and direct email. Stratics had nothing to do with it.

I should add, I have been standing in Ocllo on Test Center for 30 minutes for a VVV battle and it's either not turned on or no other person is here to activate the battle system...there might be more crickets, but I do not even hear them!

Thats very intersting that you "Claim" that. I was in Ocllo when the battle activated. And I did get killed.

I'm not entirely sure what the point of it was, when most of those questions can be or have been asked in their weekly Q&As on the shards and there was no real info on anything.

There was no prepared statement.
That sadly was painfully obvious. Personally I would love to see a video with a team that is well prepared. And I want to see it very soon. While I value the fact they used questions from the player base (like 10 Tina Small questions :) ) I am not sure this was too much fun for anyone. Petra and the others had to read out questions that they didn't really want to read out and that the team didn't really want to answer. No offense meant.

I would love to see a prepared show instead. Ten minutes, right to the point. Perfect audio quality! With proper introductions of the people involved. Like "Hello everyone, My name is Bonnie a.k.a. Mesanna and I am the CEO of Broadsword and currently functioning as your producer of UO (if that is not true I hope you still get the point). Whenever she is on screen I want to see that summary "CEO / producer" as text on screen.
"Here comes our bi-monthly UO wrap-up review!"

About up to 5 or 10 pressing questions that have been distilled both by player participation and by current work of the team.

  • Questions that really can be answered. If it's too difficult to talk about a tamer revamp - ok, then don't talk about it.
I fully understand UO is too complex to talk about just anything and fully unprepared.
There is no need to be unprepared imho.
In another thread you were being accused of answering like politicians. Well, I think this Q & A style video triggers this misconception. You are unprepared and have to face the weirdest questions ( I can say that because in a previous installment Petra had to read out one of my questions and I felt a lot of sympathy for them... they struggled to answer and it was really difficult to give a good answer. Let's say at least my question may be considered weird.).
  • Prepare yourself.
  • Be sure to have a good microphone and set up properly.
  • I repeat - be sure to have a good microphone ready and set up properly.
  • Also take heed to talk in a way non-native speakers from all over Europe will understand you. I don't say they were talking improperly, I can't say that really because audio was just too bad. In any case, once everyone got a good microphone please make sure to talk slowly and clearly.
  • The bottom 10-20% of the screen could be reserved to show text - who is talking, where does the person belong to (Broadsword / Stratics / community editor / producer / ...) - and also show the topic you are talking about on screen as text.

I really don't want to talk you down. No, quite the opposite. I want to hear you properly, I want to see you properly (if possible). I want to hear you talk about facts and I want you to talk with passion.
This Q & A style is too difficult to manage! The team is put under extreme stress! I think any team of developers would be put under stress with this format. My point is - that kind of stress is unnecessary. Noone is having fun! :-(
Relieve from this kind of stress is what our dev team needs.
I do like the idea of a video, but it all boils down to the misconception of this Q & A style. Let them prepare themselves, get good microphones, have the questions way in advance. Let them talk about questions they are passionate about and they can answer right now. I wouldn't want to be in their position - answering questions that can address just anything in UO.

To @Petra Fyde and the dev team - thanks for struggling so hard but you really don't need to put yourself under this kind of stress. Use prepared questions instead. Prepared statements. Record the video and make it a show instead. Five or ten minutes, right to the point. You will have more fun doing that, we will have more fun watching it. A lot of questions will be left unanswered, but that's ok. You can't answer them all.

--------------

Please bear with me: I am not a native speaker. My text could be considered rude, but it wasn't meant to be. Instead I hope this will help you understand how to have more fun doing what you're doing.

I think a prepared opening would have been very nice (and actually could have made it a "State of UO" thing), but I also think it is very important that they take questions. They could see the questions in advance. They had time to prepare for them.

If there are questions that they don't want to answer then that is a problem. I was very annoyed at the last one when they didn't take some of the harder hitting questions. I didn't even realize they were having another one and that we could put in a question until it was too late because the information was buried in a huge rambly post.

Otherwise, yes to most of this.

And someone buy Bleak a decent microphone! He was almost unintelligible--just like last time.

They really struggled with this one. Sorry to say, but it made me question whether or not Broadsword is competent.

No general statement or update about the publish? No addressing the hot "why did the IDOC method change" topic? Greg seemed to be the only one to give straight answers without stumbling and bumbling. Why weren't questions grouped together by some sort of common theme or topic? Didn't seem like much of an address about the state of a game as much as a poorly run Q&A session.

The guy who spoke low and didn't have a proper microphone...really? None of the other Devs could have said "hey dude, we can't hear you. fix your mike before the address"? Or atleast before they gave him another question. Come on, man.

There were some things to nit-pick about, but I will let others watch and judge for themselves. Maybe I'm making it sound worse than it was, but it was disappointing and at the very leaset I would expect a better delivery.

Well, Merlin, that's exactly the point: It's hardly possible to do so if you leave the devs unprepared. Almost anyone would struggle. I am sure if they get time to prepare their questions and answers, all these complaints will vanish into thin air.
I think this is just too much to ask for - being intelligible, polite, passionate all at the same time. And giving answers fast and right to the point. UO is a complex game. I think it's just too much for anyone to give better answers. I don't blame them.

@kRUXCg7 I'm sorry you were disappointed.
Dear Petra Fyde,

I honor your work truly. Don't be misjudged. I might have come to the false conclusion that you did not want to read out the questions. It was probably just me - I would have with some of those questions - just because I know they are difficult to answer.

I doubt I can train you anything. My fancy text suggestions are maybe too much to ask for, I don't know. But maybe people could print out questions and names and titles on paper, in HUGE letters - and hold them into the camera? Or position them on a bookstand or something so they are in camera view?
My main point is:
I want you and the developers have more fun.
And I think if you give the devs time to prepare every single question, you all will have more fun. I personally would entrust you and the dev team to choose which questions to answer wisely.

I also would love to see / hear a proper mission statement. Something that Mesanna should do. Maybe a video sequence of three minutes and right to the point.
Maybe like this:

"Hello, this is our third bi-monthly UO wrap-up mission statement. It's Oct. 3 2014 and I am Mesanna, the producer for Ultima Online.
This mission statement involves four topics to get you all updated on what we are working right now. Topics that we are passionate about and within these three minutes you will learn what to expect in the near future:

  1. Publish 1011 - we are currently adapting color fragment blah blah. Expect us to deliver on TC1 in October!
  2. Farming booster pack - we are still gathering your opinions. Right now we are thinking of farming and ranching, letting you breed giant hamsters as strong as Greater Dragons. Also including tea, coffee and plastic surgery. Nothing set in stone right now, let us gather your ideas and our own until December and then I'll let you know how we get on with this topic.
  3. Shard merging - well, there will be no shard merging. Move along, nothing to see!
  4. MyUO and account mgmt. We are blah blah blah blah and to conclude expect us to tell you more details within late November
This concludes our bi-monthly UO wrap-up mission statement. Thank you all for your ongoing support and let me know if you have any troubles or suggestions. I will now let our host Petra Fyde step up and we will answer your most urgent questions from the player base. I hope you enjoyed this brief mission statement and please stay tuned and stay passionate!

Next installment of our bi-monthly UO wrap-up mission statement: Nov. 26, 2014. Hope to see you there, and now please proceed, Petra!

"
-----------------------------------

This is just an example of an UO show that I personally would enjoy a lot! Very brief, well prepared and right to the point. The devs themselves give us their mission statement. Very brief, just three minutes at a time, every 4 or 8 weeks or so. I'd love to hear from them what they are passionate about, working on atm and so on. No need to answer *everything* and *anything*.
And then you go on to some urgent questions from the player base. These questions have been sent to the team several days in advance. They will be well prepared to answer these questions! They are allowed to reject questions if they are too difficult to answer at the given time. That's ok, no need for them to struggle with answers that just are too difficult. I want to see passion instead. In the end we don't need hefty 50 minutes. I think a show of 50 minutes shows passion for us players. I honor that! But I think 50 minutes is a lot of stress.
Even 15 minutes might be enough at a time instead!

I'd love to see a show on a regular base instead. Every 4 or 8 weeks.
A mission statement with like 3 minutes or 5 minutes. And then questions asked by Stratics staff and well prepared answers by the developers.
10 minutes for those questions will be plenty! Anything un-answered might be in the upcoming installment that is scheduled about 4 or 8 weeks later.

The hole show then will be roughly 15 minutes:

1. Five minutes for a brief mission statement by Mesanna
2. Ten minutes for Q & A with Stratics staff

Change the way you do it and it will help. You call it live, but live to me means a flow from me to you, I guess it is live in a sense that its not recorded, but thats about it

I think perhaps us and the team would get more from it if they took questions for a week, weeded them out to use the ones that make sense, that havent been asked already over and over, get prepared with them, then sit down in the office a tape the thing. Then they could at least have some QC before it hit the airwaves...
And this should also get a lot more questions answered in the same time frame, without the confusion and lag and stuff.

Just my .02

In all fairness I think your assessment of Bleak is wrong about the mic. I think he's not a public speaker. My guess is he's a bit camera shy and just not speaking up. Got the impression he's a soft spoken individual who is just a tad shy. Heck I would be. I'm not an "on camera" sort either.

I do agree a nice mission statement or address would have been welcome. Some talk about what we can look forward to in the coming Months with the Holidays coming up. Reminder when Xmas Trees get turned on.. talk about Halloween our favorite holiday!!!!!! And such would have certainly been welcome. Perhaps some idea's and plans for the next year... Heavy Holiday season is upon us. I was actually hoping to hear about new Vet rewards. Will we be getting any soon??? Any ETA on that? Didn't know I had to ask about such things. Figured that sort of question was a given. Same with upcoming holiday's.

You know thinking about it perhaps you need one person to take all the questions.... reword them in a manner that would be understandable to the staff... and then send them to the DEV's ahead of time so they can prepare a good answer for each of them.

If you aren't sure what the question was about perhaps you could either throw it out or ask the submitter to explain it better. I guess I understood more of the questions because I somewhat knew what they were asking about because I read the forums often.

And I agree if the question has been asked over and over like say customizing castles.... etc. Don't ask it.... just put it in a statement with the "answer"..... Somewhat like the will we see shard mergers? NO. And post those on the forums... you could say that question was answered during the 2012 discussion and it was NO. or whatever... without wasting time on such things that we all know the answer to.

Anyway just some feedback and suggestions.

Malag is a He.... his player is a she. As a Drow if you implied he was a She he might not be 100% offended... but he'd probably want to rip your head off for offending females by calling a lowly male a Female. Most likely he'd glare at you with those piercing lavender eyes in a way that made you know he just considered your death.

Welp, here goes my opinion.

Everything I am about to say, I say with love and appreciation to broadsword and stratics. Call it "constructive criticism" if you will.
This is what I feel went wrong, and what I feel can help things in the future. I know a lot of people, and I play a lot of servers, so some of my opinion is formed by what I have heard.

Now... we all know stratics, and no one can deny that they play a HUGE part in the game. However, the whole youtube format of some stratics admins asking a bunch of pre selected questions just seems tacky and unprofessional. The players want to see and hear their game developers, their Gods if you will...
There are many reasons I say this... but I won't go in to the breakdowns.

Secondly... at 17 years MOST of us always hear that little voice in the back of our heads telling us that UO will eventually and probably soon come to a end. What can the devs do to counter that? Well they can have one or two people on camera, very excitedly telling us about what the future holds.
The entire format gave the opposite feeling. We saw exhausted, somewhat stressed out developers, haphazardly answering questions with very little enthusiasm. This breeds the feelings that they really don't care, and dare I say it, they can't handle the world load.

In addition, I feel the whole ask questions, with a dev giving the occasional condescending answer only does more harm then good. Yes sometimes people ask stupid questions... The best way to counter that is ignore it all together, and not even include it in the presentation.

So what do I think would make a better interaction in the future?
1. Leave stratics out of it.
2. Record a video with two or three or all of you (devs) discussing the current and future plans with enthusiasm.
3. At the end of that video, do a quick Q&A with some of the current hot topics.
4. Post the video on the main uo.com for all to see. This horse has been beaten to death.. but honestly, MOST uo players do not read stratics on a frequent basis.

But anyways... its just my two cents :)

Use Twitch. Good format for viewing.... Use Twitch... folk can actually get in CHAT with a chosen few dev's or whatever reading the questions in the chat and ask them and answer them directly....

Give a few seconds to introduce yourselves... especially Steven, Greg and other team members besides Mesanna that folk don't really know that well. We'd like to know a bit more about them. What things they are excited about. What they enjoy about their job at UO etc... Might be fun to allow players to come up with a list of things to ask them... to get to know them better. Married/not, kids/not, pets/no? Etc... Hobbies? What are their favorite things to do in-game... do they play? What do they like doing? What do they do when NOT working on UO?

I still would like to capture a DEV for a day and have them come with me so I could show them some of the things that DON'T work..... things we are passionate about. Things we like seeing. Things that hurt the game...

See things thru the eyes of players... spend some time with us. Get to know a few of us. See what it is WE like to do... would like to do. I'd like to take that art guy around and show him some of the "ugly" parts of UO and see what he thinks can be done to "fix" them.

I feel like the Native American in the 70's commercials looking at the trash in the ditches and waterways with tears in his eyes when I look around some things in UO. I'd like to take a few of you on a "clean up Sosaria" tour and have you pick up all the crap littering the land. I would but I can't...

What would be wrong with hiring folk from various shards to "beautify" the shard. Everyone on shards knows who is their best decorators. You want to give the game to the players... then do so. Let those of us who love this game as much as you prove it! Let us help to improve the game and make our shards more unique and more functional and more beautiful. And why can't every Britain bank have a Gate? Most do but some don't.... good for one is good for all... otherwise... it shouldn't be good for any. Let the Governors do more than sacrifice millions of gold every week.

@kRUXCg7 I'm sorry you were disappointed. If you'd like to tell me how to achieve the effects such as reserving part of the screen etc I'll be happy to learn how to do a google hangout better.

I'm not sure where you got the impression we didn't want to read the questions. I'm possibly not the best person at reading aloud. I'll try to get in some practice at that. I haven't done it since my kids got old enough to read alone.

I don't think he was judging you. I think he is pointing out how unprofessional the whole thing is, and how unprofessional these things always are. I remember watching the one with Bonnie and dev members speaking from their living rooms or wherever they were. The one was in a dimly lit room with a lamp on, with pop cans all over and dirty clothes..... its like really? come on... The fact that we are even talking about "how do i do this in google hangouts" is enough to prove that point. some "state of uo address". More like, ask us your dumb misguided questions and we'll either act like we have no idea what you are talking about or point and say maybe in the future.

Maybe if the money we put into this game didn't just dump into the cash cow and actually partially went back into the game more we'd have nice things. It goes back to the freeshard argument even... how do people who do not even get paid have all the time in the world to roll out nice feature after feature, and do it right... without big bugs... without game breaking overpowered crap. It always feels like dev members don't even play this game.

I hate to say this but I'm going to say that our money we put into UO pretty much just pays salaries... Barely. I mean think about it... lets say there are 25k people playing UO... that's at 10 bucks a month... and think about how many do the 1 payment every 3 months thing and some have 2 or 3 accounts or whatever... but roughly 25k accounts paid every month... That's like 275k a month... You figure saleries... server rent for the cloud servers... etc.. don't know how much that leaves but it can't be a whole heck of a lot. It probably makes some 3.3 mil a year... if even..... you figure in the office expenses, saleries, server rent... etc... not a heck of a lot left and I'm probably being generous at 25k subscribers.

I give them credit for doing it at all, personally i would have preferred:

-- Mission Statement
- where is UO going in the next year? the next 5 years?

-- Answers to questions we all know will pop up (stuff that has been talked about for years like hi-res art, finishing the virtues, ftp payment format, classic shard, direct "YES we are working on this" or "NO we gave up on this idea for the indefinite future"

-- quick synopsis on the publish (for those who havent been following the updates)

THEN answer a few personal questions from stratics.

The devs dont have to do video chats at all, its awesome that we get anything, but yes i was disappointed that im still wondering what is "THE STATE OF UO"

seems like alot to me. i cant imagine renting a crappy cloud server is 2million dollars. you can rent an office for what UO needs for like 30k a year no problem.

Basically, EA and Broadsword probably pocket most the $$.

I read the transcript first (on the other thread) and then watched the video from the link on this thread. I found the transcript much more helpful, because I could quickly focus on the content. Maybe we don't really need vide0 - especially if everybody is going to pick at how it's done?

You don't think they pay the DEVs squat?

LOL, I wish we had transcripts from some of the ancient IRC events available to us. Just reading some of those years ago you could tell where the team was rolling their eyes and arching eyebrows at one another.

I like the video, it adds an enormous amount of personal connection, well a feeling of personal connection. I think, as players, passionate players, God save the Team, we want to feel that the team is as awesome and professional, as we feel our game is deep and vital. It's a tall order.

I still feel an enormous amount of connection to Tim, and Patrick, and Chris, but the reality is that we were just in a room together in Austin, along with a lot of other folks for a little more than an hour. I shook hands with each of them and talked to them for a couple of minutes. But that feeling, however irrational, remains.

Normally this is the part where I would say do the hell out of it. Do it so much it becomes second nature and polished. But that isn't realistic. What is true is the more its done, and the more attention is paid to how to improve the product, the better it will get. :)

Am I the only one who doesn't see the point of these being videos? I say we just take the top liked x number of questions from "ask a dev" and have them answer them in text format once a month, then wipe the forum and start again. That way maybe actual questions get answered instead of when can we expect hot air balloons.
I really don't need to watch them answer the questions, it doesn't add anything for me, and takes like 5 minutes worth of relevant info and stretches it out into an hour. I don't see the point.

Obviously calling this a "state of UO address" was terribly misleading, and again, a feeling I so frequently seem to have, who ever decided to call it that probably should have realized it...

Not the 0nly one (see Post #34). Video is trendy - everybody "must" have video - but most of the time - unless it's a dog driving a motorcycle or an actual unicorn or whatever - just give me the executive summary in text form, thank you.

I find videos annoying. They force you to turn off music etc to listen to them and whatnot. You also can't really view them at your own pace whereas with text you can scan through pretty quick.

They're cool to be more 'personal' but should always be accompanied by a transcript imo.

I had to watch the thing at work with my Cell Phone... When I got home I tried to load it on my PC but couldn't ever get it to play.

Well, Lady Tia wrote an extensive transcript and did it within reasonable time. Very quickly even imho.

Yeah, especially considering that in Q&A's you get a TON of "this odd little thing bothers me fix it" that really only applies to a tiny fraction of the population or questions that have been answered 100 times, or simply things that the individual reader wont care about.

In reading that transcript I think I skipped 3/4 of the questions, and read what interested me in under 5 minutes. In the video I have to sit through it or tediously fast forward.

It's nice to see the humans working on the game and all I suppose, but if they feel they must make videos I would prefer them to be reserved for actual "state of the game" type info. Like this is what we are working on, here is our plan, here are ideas we are kicking around. Something that most people will want to hear all of.

That was very nice! I didn't have the patience/interest to watch the video.

I like how Bonnie got pissed and said free shards steal OUR ideas..but unfortunately free shards have had general chat years before osi, have non breaking crashes or dupes..maybe instead if bashing and just pushing it to the side, maybe they should adapt and see how they do some of things they do..just like in any business..I own a pizzeria, I don't claim the guy down the street trying to copy my style is just a thief and F him..I try to out do him and make my product better even if it means using some of his ideas..try not to be so proud Bonnie, anyone who asks any questions are trying to better the game. Not ruin it!

Another thing. Why even though they read the questions ahead of time do they still act so surprised when it's asked, like how DARE you..

@Petra if you need help "formatting" google text and such I can make you some pretty sweet banners to make it look a bit more professional if you'd like..
Here's a small tutorial

I left the broadcast with a really sick feeling in my stomach as to the future of UO! It was NOT a "State of the Union" address. It was just a question and answer session (questions from about only 5 different people), that had A LOT of vagueness in the answers for the most part. I saw people who looked worn out and didn't bother to put much effort in the broadcast. Keep in mind, they knew the questions beforehand. It's not like they were having to think up answers on the spot. Perhaps they know something "we" don't and didn't care much for putting on a "dog and pony show". I hope I am wrong, as I love UO. But it gets tougher all the time to deal with the BS. FYI, I suspect that UO has lost MUCH more $$$ because of the HORRIBLE billing system then they are losing because of the delay in the new publish. I loved the way that the few things they did say they would/could work on, no timetable at all was given.

I expect they were/are worn out! On the systems I've worked on the days leading up to a publish were always highly stressed with very long days and little sleep. Does seem a strange time to do the broadcast.

I doubt that they are loosing anything because of the delayed publish as they have stated that the delay is so that additional player feedback can be incorporated. I think most players will see that as a positive.

The billing system has only recently come under Broadswords control and is now being changed.
