What was for you, over these 17 Years of life of UO, the best addition to it ?

It is a hard pick for me, because I would be incline to pick multiple additions..... but personally, if I had to stick with only one, I would say it was Treasure Hunting....

Sure, it has its highs and lows over time but as something freshly released, Treasure Hunting was a WOW for me......

What had you say WOW when it was freshly released in Ultima Online ?

I think High Seas and the Abyss Upgrade both have been the best addition to the game. Sooo many things to do you can never really get bored. Great Question!!

Omg I just re-read the post before sending I thought you said best addiction, who doesn't like smoking the uo crack? Best addition for me was me running into myself on multiple accounts doing dumb stuff and telling myself not too but knowing me do you think I would listen?

Been only playing for 3 years. Imbuing was already a part of the game when I joined, but I have to agree DJad.
Imbuing and reforging were the best additions I have seen so far. Refinements would be in my top 10 too.

I would probably say Imbuing, though I feel it wasn't designed correctly (too much power, made everything else in game obsolete) and the whole SA expansion. It was a lot of fun, it really changed the game (again, possibly too much) and the content lasted a long time.

Edit... after reading, I take it back.

1) Siege perilous. Wouldn't be playing UO at all without this addition.
2) Custom houses. I don't customize houses all that often, but the ability to do so allows you do to so much. It's great to tell a story, let people know who you are, use your creativity...
3) Imbuing.
4) Stealth. I really love stealth, and it was super cool when it first came out. Oh yeah, it also came out in a publish, for free.

Honorable mentions (no longer in game):
Scenarios: I really miss this style of content addition... I wish they would bring it back.

Worst:

1) Tram. Killed the game on regular shards for me. Terrible choice.
2) Insurance. Kicked the corpse.
3) Refinements. Just... just no. The design choices, not the concept. So stupidly implemented.
4) All art post ML. I dislike almost all of it, and downright hate a good deal of it. So much of it looks like it was made without using UO as a reference at all, with no concern as to whether it fit or not. From SE weapons that are all but invisible on the avatar (bokuto I'm looking at you) to all of the 100% perspective circular items (drives me insane), to the nicely done, but clearly higher resolution and thus out of place recent additions, the likes of which you see on holidays. Yech.

Dishonorable mention (no longer in game): Power hour. What a cluster****.

Imbuing and Mysticism
Love what Imbuing has done for armor/weapons, but I, for one, HATE Mysticism. Stone Form/Protection combo gives complete poison immunity & no chance to interrupt the caster, who will then use the stupidly overpowered Cleansing Winds to remove whatever debuffs are on them AND heal themselves. On offense, you have Spell Trigger allowing for 3 spells to hit you at once (Explosion, Spell Plague, Spell Trigger Bombard)

I recall being so excited about a few things..... first it was custom housing... that made me super happy but the losses suffered outweighed the good gained from that expansion. Hated losing the ease of armor and weapons to that.

Second would have been Elves. Always knew my character was a woodland elf... so being able to be a woodland elf was very important. But again was disappointed in it. I wanted brown skin..... like the wood of trees but it's not offered. So I had to "settle" for green...... not very happy then and was excited about the new housing tiles but then disappointed again when they had parts missing or looked "cut" and unfinished. Sad time again. Still am rather disappointed as well with the entrance to Heartwood. It just seems really ...... well underwhelming. Should have been a giant tree right there. Could have gone inside it and go thru the teleport to Heartwood but should have been a massive tree there.

KR was extremely disappointing as well... from what was shown it seriously didn't deliver. I wanted to finally be able to sit on the bed... to have a real 3d like experience... be wowed by the graphical update... again was a huge let down.

But SA I have to say really delivered. Imbuing was a super addition. Mysticism is amazing as well. Really was exciting for all my characters. Tamers, Hunters, Theives, and Crafters. Love the Gargoyles. Still had a few minor disappointments but overall was one of the best addition ever.

High Seas when it was finally working also was awesome. Getting there was a big hassle though.

I dont care about PVP and for PVM Mysticism is top of the pops. I hate tamers cause I hate taking care for pets. Colossus is the throw-away dragon for everyone. I have 21 chars and 17 of them are mystics. So, tell me whatever you want Mysticism is the best of the best.

I started playing right after the Samurai Empire expansion, so I missed everything before that. The Mondains Legacy expansion kinda went over the top of my head, so to speak, just because I was still so new to everything. So for me, I have really only two "expansions" to pick from--Stygian Abyss and High Seas. I have loved just about everything to do with the SA expansion, so it definitely gets my vote. No question about that. However, I've also been enjoying many aspects of the High Seas booster. It is unfortunate that there are so many things that are part of the High Seas package that still need polishing and probably will never get it at this point. I also like the Magincia bazaar system and the raised garden beds.

Edited to add: Kicking myself now that I'm reading some of the later replies for forgetting about vendor search! That's high on my list of "likes" as well.

Reforging and Shame loot was the best recent addition. it "fixed" the broken / bland crafting and loot system that imbuing itroduced.

Faction Revamp where stealing a sigil spawned tram side crimson dragon / general invasions

Halloween 08 content (epic quest along with conjurer trinkets / grimiors, jackolanterns

Worst additions: High Seas. Worthless arties no one uses. Theme Packs. Imbuing (initially when it made all loot worthless) And lastly, INSURANCE.

When I received beta access. Downloaded the files on my 14.4 modem.. Finally logged in.. And saw the beginning of the world.

Lost lands. Factions.

The world in which has grown.. All of which I enjoyed. There has been ups and downs.. Im just glad its still going.

If I ever won the lotto I would keep this game going even when it gets sold again. Just to keep a piece of history and a piece of my childhood.

For others to maybe enjoy as much as I enjoy it.

Trammel. Clever and new and exciting as UO was, the constant need to watch for attackers or thieves got wearing, to me - I know some loved it but it was not what I enjoyed at all, and I was getting near leaving the game about the time Trammel came in, and it's kept me playing all the years since.

Thanks for sharing. If I ever have to do PvP, I'll be sure to use my mystic and have those spells macroed.

Treasure hunting was the lifetime hook for me, can't imagine how many thousands I have popped, then vendor search so I could actually sell my wares, and buy maps easily.

I've never seen a trammel duck or is that a euphemism for them? *reloads shotgun and points it towards yew gate*. Be vewwy vewwy quiet, we're hunting ducks.
Why hunt ducks when wabbits abound?

Finally securing houses (lost one due to an unbanked key) and t-maps top my list.

How does that work please? My mystic doesn't get Bombard on her spell trigger menu.

The unkempt road turns sharply up and leads you over a hill. The grasses grow waist-high on either side of you, dried out and gone the colour of old bone. There are no trees between you and the horizon. Every so often you see the remnants of fallen fences - loops of barbed wire, paling posts turned cheesy by weather and time, fragments of stone wall. The ancient paddocks are bramble-choked and smell of mulch. It is not cold, but the air is damp and hard to breathe. You look down at the road. Underfoot, the black mud is pierced with weeds. There are no wheel tracks or bootprints. You are the first person to have walked this path in a long, long time.

At the top of the hill, you pause. You are tired. You have walked for hours without meeting another living creature; not a sparrow or a rabbit, much less a human being. In the distance, through a haze of cloud, you see the outlines of a city. The buildings look strangely frazzled as if by a tremendous heat. Nothing moves between them. Nothing stirs in the fields. There is nothing here alive but you.

Abyss test center. Then they closed it down and open regular test center. Bring back Abyss!!!! On a real note, I think that Trammel was great. Albeit my red was stuck in Fel for a long time. It saved the game for many people. I also like necromancy and chivalry as it brought more rp into the game. Just my 2 cents.

Excellent question and post. I actually decided I would need to mull it over for a day or so before answering lol.
My prob is I agree with pretty much all of these posts as I really do have at least that many awesome happy memories of new additions happening to uo. Be it changes to housing/large expansions-SA etc/certain events and storylines like the cpl amazing Halloween quests. content, city invasions, even tot, ethys/vendor search. I mean the list goes so on and on. Hard for me to honestly pick one as my "fave" as I know minutes after posting i'll think o 5 other things I liked better prob. So i'll mention one of my current more interesting to me additions. The addition of governors and opportunities that can present, over time as they work the kinks out ofc, to allow players to actually be able to create new and interesting storylines an scenarios for their shards to participate in. With potential staff/em support, barring approval from higher up ofc. Should those shards have people willing to do so. To me it gives opportunity for those who complain of boredom or whatever to change it up an give their shard folk something extra/dif to do. The rp community always did great at that on their own but the possibility of staff support and to create bigger storylines with other govs an the king an such is a neat addition to me. Almost gives players a chance to be a mini em, though without the powers ofc, at least in regards to storyline crafting an such.
I know many could care less about it but I enjoy that sort of thing myself so thought I'd mention it. That being said
I'm also REALLY excited about the upcoming patch - mostly due to global loot change! People will finally have reason to revisit places no one has bothered with in way to many years. I think its long overdue and I for one am excited to re explore the world and find new old places to enjoy.

Wait, @Shakkara, you don't like that an MMO has ... quests of all things?
I don't like the way it was implemented in UO, it always felt awkward and out of place.

Quests in Guild Wars 2 aren't so bad because you don't have to go to an NPC to pick them up, and they autocomplete. So just go to an area, do stuff, and get rewarded, without ever talking to any NPC. Not so bad. The dynamic events are allright too.

I really don't like the oldfashioned quests in ArcheAge either and I don't like leveling, but fortunately it's possible to reach max level in ~3 days so it's an evil that I can live with.

Getting lockdowns, being able to lock your stats, and eliminating the need for keys to unlock your house. I hated having to lock my keys down on the front steps so they wouldn't get stolen out of my pack or lose them when I died.

And before lockdowns, it got to the point that my friends and I would recall in no closer than a screen or two away, and use a key-holding char hidden in the house to let us inside. Players since, especially those with no desire or aptitude for PvP, have no idea how bad it was then. Get killed in possession of your house key, and the house was unusable because there was no feature to change locks.
