Wow, it was just so long ago that I first opened the game and logged into this awesome living breathing online world, with my nice dialup connection. Exploring the world, getting a house, being part of a guild and transitioning through more ruleset revisions than any other game.

But unfortunately all good things come to an end. While I like that UO is finally independent from EA, I just do not feel a part of the world anymore. The modern age finally caught up and I just do not enjoy the outdated interface and sluggish combat anymore. Other games like Guild Wars 2 have spoiled me with fast smooth combat, short rewarding game sessions and a minimal user interface and it's now almost half a year ago that I last logged into UO. The refinement system made me explode in hate and rage and it was the rule revision I could not stomach. I really wish I could play the game and get the Fancy Dress with conjurer's garb stats on it, something I always asked for and was finally delivered. But I'm sorry, I just cannot bring myself to log in and farm the rest of the artifacts. Or to muster the energy for another campaign to be the governor of my beloved Trinsic one more time.

Unfortunately, reality caught up. The clock keeps ticking and my two accounts keep costing me money every month. I kept it going for a while to support the dev team, but I can't keep that up forever for something that I'm not really using. With ArcheAge promising a new sandbox MMO with housing, I decided I want to try it out. Unfortunately, I'm not going to subscribe to two MMOs, so Ultima Online finally has to get the axe.

So, thanks for everyone for the amazing many years together and the great fun we've had. Thanks to the devs for keeping this thing going for so long. Thanks to stratics for hosting this forum and the great many discussions I've had here. I hope UO has some more wonderful years left in it.

I might be right behind you soon. I'm waiting for the high res artwork and new loot system. The promise of newly designed castles is also something I'm looking forward to, but I'm not counting on that really happening. PVP will never be fun until EA/BS can stop all the hack clients and cheating.

The main thing for me at the moment is seeing of BS can repopulate the servers. I don't see that happening without something to new to attract new players and a massive ad campaign to go a long with it. Ya never know, BS might have something big up there sleave. Pinco seems to think "everything is awesome".

It sucks that your leaving, but I completely understand. I've enjoyed your posts here on stratics and have shared many of your points of views. Take care.

Well Mesanna always has the "That's a good idea, we'll look into it". Which to me says, it could happen, but don't hold your breath lol. This specific instance I don't recall exactly what was said though.

I guess I'm the only one that finds it annoying that people feel the need to come here and post why they quit? Like people don't quit the almighty WOW everyday or something. I've quit the game several times and come back several times cause nothing else compares to the depth of UO. Okay maybe if they ended the CC I might quit and pretend it's some fault with the game, but that's about it. Sometimes I feel like flying a spaceship for awhile, I get it. Sometimes I suppose it's fun to play Farmville for awhile to do something different. If you want to do something else, after 17 years, I can understand that. But I suggest bank your stuff, cause nothing else compares. A person could list 10 major things they don't like about UO and it would barely be a blip on the radar screen of things to do in UO. I just find it super annoying people feel the need to come here and share with us about it. I guess that was a more detailed version of my "Buh Bye" post ;) Just quit, just go, spare us, tyvm. See ya when ya get back :p

It's a good thing that people feel so strongly about this game that they would pay for 6 months while trying others but still feel some strange loyatly to post a reason. At best something can be taken from these postings but at worst it's another plot that won't ever see a house.

Most I ever quit UO for was a whole 2 weeks. But I can understand her frustration and sentiment. I too am irritated when I see wonders in other games. Trust me I've been playing EQ Landmark since the Alpha... And OMG is it so beautiful... and the designing and building is to die for...

I'll say this though... I understand her posting here. I'm still waiting with Landmark to see how death, fighting, PvP, PvM and PvE are going to be handled before I decide to say my goodbye's to Sosaria... but the more I see there and the more they add and the rich beauty and such keep drawing me further away from UO... And the more I see the team of DEV's over there with there constant communication and willingness to work on things and fix them and the speed at which they fix things... and when I see them actually posting caring and being concerned about the players... and watching all their weekly live update feeds when they tell us all about what they are working on and such.... with behind the scenes stuff and all.... the more frustrated I become with UO and the DEV's here...

I see all these wonderful things going on over there and I keep asking..... WHY??? Why is it not like that here? Why can't UO have amazing stuff like that? And tell me it's about people here being critical? NO. Trust me people on all game forums are CRITICAL. I've seen it. If we are critical of things going on..... it's because we are concerned and we care... because we see other teams in action and we can't understand why we aren't given the same respect. After all ...... Landmark.... FREE TO PLAY. I pay for this and have for over 14 years...... and not just 10 bucks a month NO more like 90+ a month... and I'm not alone. So we wonder what am I paying for exactly? How many DEV's are left? Under 10? And we try to give them money idea's as well... telling the DEV's things we WOULD pay for. More storage, another character... a second house, etc... What do I get? a towel and a sword that I can't imbue?????? *sighs*

Judging by the video chats and stuff, we probably have (for UO, despite what they say) 5. Of course, I'm almost certain they say more, but I believe they pad their numbers by saying the DAoC devs work on us too...

have you ever stopped to consider that the average UO player/Stratics poster has been playing UO ten years? That's a long time.
Then you have the oldtimers that have been here 17 years. Heck our relationship with UO has lasted long than all of the Kardashians' relationships. LOL
So in a sense we're a family. A squabbling, pking, dysfunctional family but a family none the less. We're all connected like one big chain.
When one of us leaves that link will never be replaced. So if someone wants to say goodbye its because they care, because in some small way you're the family they are leaving.

My previous statement was made a little hastily .. actually ArcheAge will appeal to any Ultima player that focused on PvP..
I think the graphics are absolutely beautiful.. especially if you like boats... I also participated in beta.. I just found the non consentual PvP tiresome... and the focus on joining one of the three guilds narrows gameplay options in my opinion..

But it seems well written for PvP'rs and if your play style focuses on the thrill of combat with other players you should like it..

I hate to see any UO player leave.. But I love to welcome them back.. :)

Thanks for all the kind words.

And yes, while ArcheAge and the other next-gen sandbox games may have all the shinies, never forget where they came from. All of them credit Ultima Online as their source of inspiration. Just stop and think for a moment how UO was way ahead of its time and what a revolution it brought to gaming. World of Warcraft might have been much bigger due to its appeal to the masses, but it was UO that started it all. And in my opinion, UO always had more features than WoW ever had. In which other MMO can you take stuff from your pack and place it anywhere on the ground? The strength of UO was always in the little things that gave players endless freedom.

Maybe I'll be back someday, even though UOs subscription fee is a huge barrier. Maybe the devs should look at ArcheAge; free to play but need to subscribe to own a house.

Maybe make 4 different level off fee,

1. The fee we have now allow you to own a Castle or keep and a High Sea ship
2. 75% of the fee we have now allow you to own a large house and a High Sea ship but not keep or Castles
3. 50% of the fee we have now allow you to own a small house and a High Sea ship but no large house or keep/castle
4. 25% of the fee we have now allow you to play but you can't own a house or a High Sea ship

This may make players choose smaller houses so we will see less Castles owned of players, who not really play. They could get a small house for their most valuable items.
I don't think UO should be free to play

The old UO was very exciting and fresh in it's day, but it really really sucked too. There's a reason UO has advanced to where it's at today. If the old UO was released today I doubt it would last 5 minutes. That day has passed and no game can bring that back. If ArcheAge is doing that, enjoy it for the brief time it's here.

Yet old school type free shards have a much more active player base/community..go figure..

Prodo UO has bigger problems then content that's for sure. Lack of development for one..maybe the stratic junkies and people who post here on a daily basis are content with new deco items and grind fest's..but no one else is. There is pretty much zero direction to UO, and no real reason for anyone to start playing. It just kind of sits in a stagnant freeze, waiting to die or milk as much of the vet player base as it can until the all reach year 14 and UO shuts down and can't continue to pay a lackluster team with character transfer income.

In real life, people may have "Gee our old LaSalle ran great" nostalgia, forgetting that the carburetor choke needed tinkering with every other week, and that the vehicle's comfort, technology and performance were nothing like what's available today. Similarly, whenever there are calls for "classic" shards, besides that we've been told the Devs are not going to bother with the code, I wonder if people realize how bad the game used to be.

Garriott's original UO had no NPC guards, because he thought players could police each other. No stuck option, so if you died on a ledge outside of the limited GM hours of the time, your character was done for the night. And because GMs weren't around 27/4, a lot of cheaters waited until those hours to log on. UOE with snooping from across the room, multi-steal, seeing invisible players, ghostwalk, bank anywhere, and Uzi bows. Sphere effect. House break-ins.

GM Darwin, and who knows how many others. I knew one who was held in such high esteem by the RP community, became an Ancient Seer on another shard, then came back to grief events with his noto PK guild. They had certain, shall I say, "tricks" courtesy of his position in the game, the least of which was a dye tub of colors unavailable any other way.

The strength bug that went unfixed for many months. No skill locks until "Publish 1" in November 1999. "Learning by watching" had already been done away with, because of campfire starters at banks, but you could be in the middle of a fight and see magery suddenly go down, all because you switched weapons and went from 0 t0 0.4 wrestling. No stat locks until 2002! Combined with the strength bug, I actually lost str and gained dex while lumberjacking.

If there had already been any reasonable alternatives, even EQ that I personally found butt-ugly, I can't see how UO would have survived its first year.

I have given you this hint before, from the first day of Econ 101: price goes down, demand goes up.

Do you seriously think any of these "free shards" would be around if people had to pay $12.99 a month, or $59.99 up front for six months? They might have subscribers, but not enough to justify keeping a server going.
