Loose Gold?

You're coming up with new systems for something that essentially isn't broken.

A new player can farm enough gold in a reasonable time frame to advance their character. Kill monster, get gold, buy better stuff. It's a very simple concept for new players.
A mid level player can gather enough sought after resources to enter the player-to-player economy and start moving up the ranks.
A high level character can wheel and deal in sums that reflect the current economy.

Back in the early days of UO, the economy was mostly player-to-npc based. It is now mostly player-to-player. That is surely a good thing (unless you're starting out on an empty shard).

It's all well and good saying the economy should be changed back to being NPC based and gold should be driven through low level resources - but it neglects the fact that 95% of the player base are veterans who don't want to, and for the most part won't, go back to farming leather, feathers and meat. Currently if they want gold they can farm stuff other players actually want. Spending large amounts of the developers limited time re-working major systems for the benefit of the trickle of new players would be silly, particularly as it is already easy for new players to get a foot in the door, and the new system would actually make it more complicated for them. And it is not an easy game to work out as it is.

The problem with the current inflation is gold storage. One system to change that benefits everybody, without trying to balance out the underlying principals of the economy.

Scripters were doing that anyways. Anyone else remember the gold scripters that used to camp the Ice Fiend room, Painted Caves and Prism of Light's Crystal Daemon room 24/7?
Hell, when i first started playing, i would loot the backpacks off of Ratmen/Lizardmen that would raid Brit every now and then, and sell the backpacks to the Tanners for 3 gold per. Talk about scrounging.
I did the same. Sometimes I'd see backpacks discarded on top of WBB, calculating how much I'd spend in regs to teleport up and back down, and if it would be worth running to the provisioner's shop.

If you have a sampire you can make billions of gold in less then 6 months. Never actually loot any gold. Just selling scrolls, replicas, and shame type loot. I made over 3 billion gold this way very fast. It only costs maybe 10 million gold to make your sampire. Anyone who ever bought from a search site or one like it is why its so saturated now. They were ones farming gold and scripting and duping to have enough stuff to sell for cash. Even if they wiped gold today or lowered amounts, I could still be a billionaire by end of the year again. Just play smarter with your time.

I've been noticing a significant change on Atlantic for the last year or two in the way people buy things. Instead of selling things for gold like usual, more and more people are just trading stuff, it's easier than buying off vendors, and helps people avoid the dreaded words "oh hang on a sec I store gold in my house and have to move that 500 million into my bank". It might be worth a try to just add a second type of gold, make a patch that turns every 1 million gold check into one "gold bar" or something like that. This way the players that don't have millions of gold will still have insurance money easily available as someone mentioned earlier, and the players with tons of gold would be able to create stacks of "gold bars" and not have to worry about bazillions of checks taking up space and filling up vendors.

The reason checks are limited to 1,000,000 and aren't stackable is to prevent duping larger amounts (though this is rather irrelevant these days when they can dupe easily sold multi-million dollar tokens). Any solution to gold storage they implement will almost certainly involve a non-item (or at least no item you can actually hold or move) system.

Can't make larger checks because of the dupers. MUST have randomized ore/wood locations to fight the scripters [which in the end only made them stronger].

Anyone else tired of having gameplay and game decisions built around those people and not us legitimate players? What does it matter if they are duping gold, remove it, and they will just dupe slithers or something that is worth even more than the 1mil check.

Don't forget the delay of several seconds between turning in BODs, because surely it was game-changing and an unfair advantage that a scripter could sit there for two minutes (how many BODs could a character turn it at any time?!).

If they wiped out all the gold, who would have any money to buy your stuff?
