I am curious as to how any charity gains from this challenge.

Well, it raises awareness.
For one, I can mention that I had no idea about this disease or the foundation, but this challenge made me aware of it and I ended up donating for the cause.
I believe there are many more stories like this out there. The visibility the foundation and the disease are getting from this is priceless.

ALS Association just posted today that the challenge has raised $62.5 million as of Saturday, up from $53 million Friday.

What I have read is if you accept the challenge and dump the ice you only have to donate $10 if you pass the challenge you have to donate $100

I heard on the radio this morning that the "Ice Bucket Challenge" has raised over 50 million dollars so far.
