Oh Dear. Ive just clicked on the Steam link to take a look and its not good. 20 discussion threads and over 700 posted comments on Steam and barely a good word being said about UO. It reads like a list of reasons why you shouldnt go near the game if you are a new player considering it. Its just horrendous.
And those are the former players talking about it. New players on Steam are even less likely to have anything positive to say about it from the Steam page.

well, itll bring good advertisement to the freeshards i suppose if nothing more. or possibly the devs will read those comments and decide where they want to take the game to appeal to those who would not return / start uo in its current state. Certainly informative to the devs if they can be open to it.

I know it's kind of a been there, done that discussion but maybe a classic shard would have helped/could help get some players back.

No. "classic shards" have been done to death... None of them are really classic now are they?

17 years of content... Hell, I have played for most of those... There are still things I have not done.

No, they haven't been done at all and that's why the discussion keeps getting brought up.

I'm just saying it because of looking at the Steam page.

This thread has gone on for quite a while, and while it's great that everyones discussing idea's to improve the game, as we all know...even if everything we could ever want was put into UO, (like classic shards, free to play etc.) the determining factor for whether or not new players will want to play the game is the games community, And right now the community (from an outside point of view) is 20+ dead shards and 1 active shard full of so much wealth and so many rares that a new player knows they will most likely never have. In addition to that, even if the new player does manage to make money a scammer can take it all away in just a few minutes. Basically, if we want new people to play this game we first have to improve it from the inside, the developers can't make people be nice, which leaves only 2 options. Option #1 the community chooses to improve itself, scammers stop scamming, griefers stop griefing, exploiters stop exploiting, people try to be kinder to new players and not just dismiss them as noobs. Option #2 The GM's just ban everyone breaking rules (which they will most likely never do).

the developers can't make people be nice.
True but they have played a huge part in shaping uss

There will always be a % of players that think cheating in games is OK but if there is no penalty or a very small penalty for cheating more and more players will choose to do so because why should they play nice when everyone else does not

Same goes for all illegal activity in uo exploiting duping etc

To play nice or not is just a point of view i m sure scammers feel that it should be accepted to scam why would they not the game does very little to stop them and after all it is just pixels Right?

The evidence how the game are shaping uss is all over the game
Em events
Before the last change how Em dropps was rewarded to the topp attacker more and more people was starting to play the top end trower do all these players think trowers are the most fun thing to play in game or do they just want to compete for the em rewards?
Storage
Why do so many people in this game have such a hard time trowing stuff away so after awhile not even the massive lockdowns in a castle is enough for them well at least i think it has alot to do with cleanp britannia and the simple fact that items that once was worth almost nothing now can be worth alot take rubble for example
I wonder how many people wish they would have saved all that rubble they got from the event when they see the prices that it sell for today

The chicken and the egg
So we give feedback to the devs and the devs change the game to what we like and we the animal of habit called humans shaped by the game like what we done in the past get the same of the same of the same
And for every new year the game become tailored for an ever shrinking group of people
New players are the reward and the solution so if nothing else comes out of this steam at least the devs get feedback from gamers that are not already playing uo in theire comfort zone

Maybe putting UO to pasture wouldn't be such a bad idea.
Totally disagree. It seems to be a common attitude today... to consider anything "old" as worthless, and trash it for cheap shiny new toys. UO won't last forever, but it still has value to many of us who don't see "new" as always better.

The only thing that matters is if it has value to EA/Mythic/Broadsword (or whoever is running the debacle these days). The second it becomes unviable then they will shut it down in the blink of an eye. We creep ever closer to that day. It may be a while yet but it will come, and people will move on to other things.

I sincerely hope that at least Ultima Online can see its 20th birthday...... and hopefully get well past it.....but at least see a nice, even, 20 years of age......

When UO came out it served a genre, and now it serves a niche. If you want to have a game with a house, there are tons. UO might be good if you can't run The Sims 4, lol. If you want a game where you PvP, UO is antiquated (tile based) and no quality tested (tons of cheaters). It hasn't won in this area in awhile. If you want PvM, UO has that, and still does that fairly well. I'm not sure there is a cheaper, better, subscription based MMORPG for PvM at a $9.99 /mo. rate. There is going to be an audience via Steam, maybe impulse only, who knows. But one thing is for sure, no one is going to buy UO off Steam if it isn't up there at all. :p
