I'm pretty much seeing red at this point. Years ago I tried getting my original account back (which is being played by someone else) and I was unsuccessful. Months ago, Mesanna stated that people can get back their original accounts as long as they can provide information to verify that they are the owner.

Two months ago I emailed Mesanna all the information I have including CD keys. I got a reply stating that she received my email which I appreciated, but I did not hear back from her for a month. I decided to forward the email to UO Support.

Today I received an email back from UO Support, basically stating that I did not have the correct answer to the secret question. By the way, the secret question was "What is your favorite author?" - I do not read books for enjoyment, just for classes. This was NOT my secret question. I actually remember the secret question and answer I originally set, vividly.

Could people change their secret questions at some point?

I supplied my name, address, character names on the account, date of birth, date the account was created, pictures of the original box it came in CD with key and my license all in 1 photo. How can I not get my account back by supplying a picture of the CD with the CD KEY in MY POSSESSION!?!

I accepted the fact years ago that I would not get my account back. However, recently I was filled with false hope and in turn I'm now livid. I currently have 3 accounts that I play consistently as well as frequently buy items from the UO store. I'm on the verge of cancelling everything just because of how this is situation is being handled.

The treatment I am getting from support, is poor to say the least.

Hello,

When a customer requests an account to be retrieved, we require specific information from that customer in order to verify account ownership and uphold account security. The information you have provided thus far has been deemed insufficient by Ultima Online support, and the following information will need to be verified:

Favorite Author:

Please be advised that we will be unable to accept any other information or documents in lieu of the requested information. For account security purposes the provided information must match exactly what is on file for the account in question. Should you be unable to provide the requested information in it's entirety, we will be unable to relinquish control of said account. No further correspondance on the matter will be answered until such time that the requested account details are provided.

This is disgusting, how can they do this? You must have been able to change your secret question at some point. Can anyone verify this?

I tried the same thing 2 years ago. Same run around. It's pretty pathetic IMO but given the equally pathetic billing system we have I am not shocked. It is also one of the main reasons my opinion of our current UO team is not very high. My account was apparently stolen when I was not playing it and even though I had the original billing info and the CD key I was basically told I was screwed without knowing the email address and the secret question on the account. I've let it go at this point but yeah, I feel your frustration.

Yes we will do what we can to help players get their accounts back if they can confirm its there accounts. We have to be careful with this due to the fact players give, sale, and trade accounts. We will not take an account away from someone that has been paying for it for x amount of years. Please look at it from our side also...we have to confirm the information and not just give accounts away because someone wants it.

If players can provide the correct information we will be happy to do what we can do help get the accounts.

I had no problem when I went to retrieve my account information last summer, though I was the only player who ever had the account info. I gave them my join date (August 2003), when I quit (in 2005, forget the month, again in September 2007, and after 2010's RTB), along with the answers to my security questions (I didn't remember what they were, but they gave them to me & I answered without any difficulty)

for it for x amount of years.
So basically if someone acquired an account by any means and has been paying for it for x amount of years, it's now theirs. This was not what I had heard over the live stream with the dev team. You specifically stated that even if an account was sold to someone that the original owner could get it back.

NOTE: In this case, my account was not sold.

From what I'm hearing now, it sounds more like this:
Anyone can get their account back, unless someone else is paying for it. We wouldn't want to lose any money that we're getting from the person who is currently paying for it.

Please look at it from our side also...we have to confirm the information and not just give accounts away because someone wants it.
Bonnie, I'm going to try to respond to this politely, as I think this statement is rather rude. I'm not asking you to give away an account just because I want it. It was mine to begin with, and I clearly provided the information showing that I was the original owner.

If players can provide the correct information we will be happy to do what we can do help get the accounts.
With all the information I provided, I would appreciate it if you specifically stated whether I have or have not provided enough information to verify that I am the original owner of the account, please.

Someone else is paying and using this account? Why would you expect to be able to get it back? It would seem to be that you either gave it away, sold it or some other event occured yet you want this other person's worked account? If this happened to some account I bought and payed for I would lose my mind.

How exactly did this person obtain your account? If you didnt sell it, or GIVE it to someone, then are you saying you were hacked?

And if you WERE hacked, why didnt you address it years ago? Telling them back then that you were hacked is alot different than just trying to reclaim it

Welcome to the conversation, it seems you're missing the big picture. Mesanna stated people can get their original accounts back, even if they were sold. This is fact, and recorded in video. Whether you agree with that or not is not the point.

What is the point is that nothing was stated about "unless someone is currently playing the account."

So I at one point owned a car. Somehow it is not mine anymore and it might have been stolen, sold or given away but none of those options are clear. Another person has been driving this car for period X yet I would like it back can you please help me....come on.

I sold an account that I would have loved to get back but the three that I use today I opened up fresh and wouldn't think of attempting to yoink the old one be it opened or not.

I let the GM of the guild I was in play the account cause I was not going to be playing UO for a while. Returned a year later, asked the wife of the GM if I could have it back, she stated that it was tied into her EA account and could not do that.

For once I agree with the dev response. Sounds like you sold/gave your account to someone and now want it back even after they've been using it literally for years and have probably invested countless hours into developing the characters, gathering items, etc. Now you just want to claim those items and whatever wealth attached to that account as your own purely because you originally created it.

Protip: Don't give anyone else access to your account to keep it secure and in your own possession. Quite simple, really.

What point exactly are you arguing, or are you only reading parts of the story?

You are literally arguing with Mesanna's statement of letting original owners get their accounts back and completely ignoring the topic pertaining to whether or not someone is playing the account currently or not.

Uh no, I'd be plenty happy if all housing/banking/belongings go to the person who is currently playing it and they could transfer it to one of their other 3-5 accounts.

Yes, such is life, and as with any other online service that currently exists in the world today there are procedures for people to get what belongs to them back if it was taken.

And, I will repeat for you cause you're obviously completely ignoring this statement.

MESANNA SAID ORIGINAL OWNERS CAN GET THEIR ACCOUNTS BACK WHETHER THEY WERE SOLD OR NOT

So exactly what you're arguing and who you're arguing with is completely unknown at this point.

I'll say this.... I bought 2 accounts many, many years ago. If someone came along 10 years or more now later and took one of those accounts from me.... I'd quit. I'd shut down every account I still pay for though I've paid for all my accounts EACH AND EVERY month not on and off..... for over 10 years. I couldn't tell you if the persons who sold me the accounts were the original owners or not. I can only assume what they said was true. But for sure I'd be mad as all get out if someone came along claiming to be the original owner some 10 years later and took one of my accounts. Not only would that in this day upset me to no end but as with many folk those accounts are as linked together as an infinity knot. Would give that person access to all sorts of things that would just be the end of UO for anyone.

Seems you're conveniently ignoring the ToS I quoted earlier. Here it is again:
(b) Passwords. Upon your registration for the Service, you will select a password. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password and you are responsible for any harm resulting from (1) disclosing your password; (2) allowing another person to disclose your password, and (3) use by any person of your password to gain access to your Account and User ID.
That's your actual agreement with EA. Also, here's an extract of rule #14 from the Rules of Conduct just for good measure:
You will not share your account password or account details with anyone, and you will not hold Electronic Arts responsible for any damages that you may incur from doing so.
Since you chose to violate the rules of the game and your agreement with EA via the terms of service, you are responsible for the damage caused (in this case, losing access to said account.)

Why is this so difficult for you to comprehend? Like I said, you need to take responsibility for your own poor choice to disclose your password, move on and take it as a good lesson rather than coming here demanding EA bail you out and childishly threatening to close your accounts in a hissy fit because you did something really, really stupid.

The difference is, what I quoted is meant to represent a legally binding agreement between yourself and EA. You agreed to this when registering your account. You've chosen to violate it as well as the rules of the game. EA are under no legal obligation to help you whatsoever, and as you can see from the general consensus in this topic most people agree that in this case that's probably the right option. You shouldn't have disclosed your password.

Spiritless, you have very good points, and in fact they don't at all contradict what Mesanna said. He lacks the comprehension of basic English to realize what she was actually talking about.

"But I need people to understand this also. Um, and this is very very important. People that bought accounts from other people, and the original people obtained and kept their secret passwords, can take that account at any time and there's nothing we can do about it. If the person owns the password, they own the account."

Mesanna is talking about "the original people" taking the account back because they have the secret question, nothing else.

A sells or otherwise gives an account to B, but B neglects to change the secret question. That means A can take back control of the account at any time because A can answer the secret question. That's all she's saying.

Meanwhile, Sibble agrees with Malagaste about quitting over someone taking back an account, yet has no compunction to do that to someone else!

I completely agree with you, as I would do the same. After Mesanna made that statement, a couple of my friends were extremely worried that someone would try and get their accounts back, as they bought them from someone else.

Mesanna is just a person who currently runs the dev team and really nothing more. She is attempting to please everyone and giving this account back to a person who allowed another player to take ownership of it would be the incorrect choice.

I'm very sorry for the mistake you made. I'd love to think it went something like: "I'm going to take a break from UO for a year would you like to use my account and pay for it while I do something else?" but I'd suspect it was more "Fu%$ this game I'm done with it would anyone like my account?". Now it's a year or more and ,most likely, you have not maintained contact with who ever took the account over and they said piss off.

Again, sorry for your luck.

Oh for the love of heaven. You are completely misunderstanding what she said. She even said that whoever controls the password and secret question controls the account, and that EA cannot give the account back, nothing else. She said

NOT
ONE
DAMN
THING

that you can get your old account back when someone got the login information and has been paying for it.

What she is actually warning about is people like YOU who will try to get the account back.
Why is it you constantly troll my posts? Did I make you angry in game or something?

And I'll go ahead and respond to this even though it's a troll post...

Right, she said nothing about people not getting their account back if someone is currently playing it.

THAT
IS
MY
POINT

Again, I'll go ahead and create a simple scenarios that you can comprehend.

Scenario 1:
Player A lets player B play account Z
Player B changes password and secret question to account Z
Player B stops playing
Player A can successfully recover account Z

Scenario 2:
Player A sells account Z to player B
Player B changes password and secret question to account Z
Player B stops playing
Player A can successfully recover account Z

Scenario 3:
Player A lets player B play account Z
Player B changes password and secret question to account Z
Player B is still playing
Player A cannot recover account Z

Scenario 4:
Player A sells account Z to player B
Player B changes password and secret question to account Z
Player B is still playing
Player A cannot recover account Z

From what Mesanna said, in this thread, that recovering an old account is based on whether someone is actively playing it, or not.

My account was apparently stolen, so I got screwed and no one could do a thing. There was no trading or selling or borrowing or any of that in my situation. I didn't play the account for a few years, wanted to get it back, was told too bad so sad.

I still have our emails by the way which is funny....

Anyhow, yes I understand your side of things but from what I was told by folks when I called in to the oh so ghetto EA support, the account wasn't even in use for a long while. I guess they got what they wanted and ditched it. Now its just sitting there in cyber limbo collecting dust when I could be using it, not only using it but upgrading to the latest expansions and having 2 accounts active instead of one.

I wasn't thinking about it till I saw this post and my sadness returned.

At least its Friday =/

I gave up on trying to get my account back like 2 years ago until I saw the video which filled me with hope and attempted, once again, to take back what I rightfully owned, and paid for.

By the way to mister I like to quote terms of service aka Picus, that's there so that if someone reclaims their account and virtual items are missing that EA is not responsible for those missing items. It has nothing to do account recovery. Just like ANY ONLINE SERVICE you can recover YOUR ACCOUNT if you've LOST IT.

That's why there is an account recovery procedure for this very game which this discussion is about.

So it's been well over 2 years, get bent.
