I found that your reply piqued an interest in me as to 'why' you wouldn't think that some would tell the truth? Just curious on your opinion on that. :)

Because even in game many people won't tell. Some refuse to use things like Ventrilo because they don't want anyone to know they aren't what you think they are. Just something I've noticed over the years. I have no idea why... since I've never hid my gender.

Games that have more combat and level-based systems seem to attract more male gamers. Games that have more sandbox play, decorating, houses, crafting and interaction seem to attract more female gamers.

There have actually been several studies on this, starting from the late 1990's. The first samples showed it dominated by the males, with 75% or more responding as male. The last study I saw - I don't remember who did it but think it was 2008 to 2010 era - it showed gamers to be about 50/50.

The part of the study I found interesting was that when asked about the gender of the characters played online, male gamers played about half and half. Female gamers played almost exclusively as females. The result was that there were more female characters in games than males.

I do believe that UO tends to have more female players than other games....but still expect males will outnumber us :)

Female and play a mixture of male and female characters. But then I enjoy role-playing so.... I like to play whatever suits the situation. I "inherited" some of my characters so didn't really make a few of them.

Male and play a mixture (8 male, 6 female) on my main shard of which I inherited 4 of the characters (2 and 2).

Overall I have many more male characters throughout UO due to the male being the default when creating for cross shard trading.

The armor drops as loot can have female armor. Unlike the real world, males cannot wear female armor. After the Invul. female armor pile started to grow I just made all new characters female. Not like the game has a lower STR cap and higher DEX for female characters. I could of put in about a high INT cap. But life has learned me that idiots have no gender boundries.

Then there are those that had been brought up properly. They are nice to girls even if there might be a man behind those pixels.

Oh, I forgot to mention that aside from being a RL female, I also only play female characters -- mainly because I'm a wuss who doesn't like to fight (aside from pirate hunting perhaps) and it would therefore be rather embarrassing to try to play a male.

Only real men pvp in fel and I believe that fel currently only makes up about 15% of the total population. So I would have to say that 85% of the overall UO player base is of course female and currently decorating their house or loitering around the Luna mint in a pretty outfit.
I hope this helps :)

Female player, female characters....
Love long walks on Felucca beaches...
Fascinated with marking runes...
Rocks a champ spawn...
Have a passion for Daemons..
Wields a deco tool occasionally, but mostly use it to crack giant serpents outside my shop.

I bet this game is a 90% sausage fest just like every other game

but enough players are lonely enough to get E-girls to give them free ****

Also... gotta love being able to wear female armor if it's good enough.

Well, the top-end pvp crowd is overwhelmingly male, in every game. Other kinds of players are more gender-mixed. I myself am a male player of male characters.

While I no longer play, I did play for 14+ yrs. non stop. I never would have ever played except for my son whom was in the US Navy. I was missing him and he had been playing Ultima Online since beta stages. He came up with this hairbrained idea that if HE got me a computer and bought me UO we could visit each other somewhere in the UO world while he was in far flung places of the world. :) Enter my win.95 and UO 98. He made up my first ever character and he named her Queen Zen as he instructed me how to log on and play UO, when he came home on leave he was showing me how to play and move my first ever chr Queen Zen which he sorta created the template for ie swords archery fighting skillz. My son created a monster for before I knew it, I had like 12+ active UO accts. full of male and female chrs.

HE and I both tried to get his sisters playing UO they tried and quit when they got guardwhacked for killing tame sheep in Delucia and shouted THIS GAME IS TOO VIOLENT and nary did either of them return ever to UO. :) My son forgot to tell his sisters a *blue* sheep is a tamed one dont' kill it ...he told me though. lol

Funny thing happened one day when he on his old character was trying to teach me how to defend myself in the all felucca pre trammel era of UO.
He told me to observe and learn...we were in Brit but out of guard zone. Suddenly a pk attacked MY BOY...there I was on my noob character, with like 50 archery shooting at some red for ATTACKING MY SON. :) I DIED. My son shouted at me MOM I told you to observe my chr. and how I defended that miner, so u could learn. The pk barely had scratched my son at first but I reacted which sent son to defend me resulting in both our UO deaths. Meanwhile the pk broke out laughing, and shouted [as he res'd me and my son's chr..] {OMFG that is UR MOM} lol

My son said yeh and she is feisty and obviously doesn't listen to me..or anyone...trying to teach her the game but she got all ballistic on you and me even though she can't fight yet. I laughed and said...um sorry motherly protective instinct kicked in...sorry grown male son whom runs a nuke sub and knows how to rl shoot and kill even...but he attacked my boy... I REACTED. lol

Soooooooooooo I played female and male chrs. I was in Order and Factions and maybe it is cuz I was born under ARIES or whatever feisty female and I played male and female chrs. both. When my son left UO cuz they created TRAMMEL I took over his acct. thus played even more males but, I was not gonna change his chrs. every time I played HIS chrs. it reminded me of playing with my son in Ultima Online when he was all over the world in the USN and UO is what helped us hang out no matter where in the world he was stationed.

:)
Course the first male chr. I made some pk said I fought like a girl...............lol on my male chr. haha...
so after that I made my male chrs. more like my son would act or play UO or like my husband or brothers or male cousins ya know, I could cursed like a guy or a sailor, I 'tried to fight like one' and after a while be it on male or female chrs. of mine, some pks no longer said I fought like a GIRL....they just said ...UR ARE FIESTY, for a dead UO ghost, course some times I WAS NOT the dead ghost, sometimes, they were the dead ghost. lol :)

haha

how very strange.
out of all the years ive been playing this game i made my very first female character last week on a HK shard.
i stumbled upon a vender that was selling real nice suits for a cheap cheap price, unfortunately he stopped stocking and only female suits where left.
i needed to make one more character to finish what i was doing so i ended up making a female just so i could use that cheap suit.

but now that i look back at it i think it will be ok.
she can do the same job and ill only have to pay her half of what i pay my male characters, so its win win really.
(and yes, thats a joke!)

male player, only play male characters.
but i do have a uncanny eye for color coordination in my outfits and decor.

Female in rl - all female characters in game. It never crossed my mind to create a male character, no particular reason why. My rl husband has all male characters on his main account. His second account has mixed characters.

uos female characters boobs arent as big as in other games. so i tend to make male characters in uo cause im a male. i do have a few chick characters tho. like my tamer. tamers seem to be good for a woman character. especially if i happen to pvp with one im not quite as embarrassed somehow.

now in other games, you spend alot of time looking at the character, alot of times from behind. so in those other games with more appealing graphics im more apt to make a female character. staring at a guys butt for hours and hours of gameplay just isnt that appealing, which is why many guys make female characters in other games.

You just have to keep checking the loot drop for the right proc is all.

Haha, I dated a friend from UO for awhile, there are definitely a lot of women who play UO. Honestly for anyone who has been to a UO convention, you'd know it's a pretty even group, too.

In game I only main male characters except on different shards, where I created a few female characters like I have a tailor on one shard named Piper Perabo (because she is amazing, and I won't hear anything else, and also because I started playing UO when I was like 14-15 years old).

Personally I always thought it was creepy how men played female tamers. It's a trope of male gaming I guess. Also, post EverQuest, you got the trope of male gamers playing, or creating, a woman character, just for the perv factor of zooming in on the model.

Oops, Smoot beat me to that last point ;P.

For years in game I have had many different characters and on a whole when I make a new one I think of what they do and how they will be used.... Not always are they female, though I have been a female all my life hehe
I can say I would be amiss to dismiss Fayn or Longfellow .. my crafters I have had the need and then the want for male charcters in game ...
It's sort of like dolls for adults hehe
Now my son on the other hand has sprinkled in female characters in with his warriors. As he put it his ladys get left alone and he likes that just fine. If he wans to fight watch out and dont tell yanaki he is dainty! If your not bright enough you best know the name of a good healer in your area....

I am woman here me whine. j/k!

All the characters I have made are girls. I tend to be the warrior type. Archery, swords. etc. The girl chars I have that utilize magery are thieves and a crafter for transport. I like to decorate, but nothing fu fu like flowers and butterflies and unicorns and rainbows. None of my characters are "sexy". I prefer to spend my time toiling and fighting monsters.

I think my characters are a reflection of me to a point. Kinda like each one takes on a part of our personality. Or perhaps we assume their identity?
Anyone else feel like that?

The inherited male characters are mostly crafters and although some are warriors, I did inherit from a male a female tamer. :D It was fun raising her skills higher. I would have never made a tamer on my own.

My husband plays straight up male characters.

When (stinky) elves came out a slew of female (stinky) elves hit the PvP scene due to the broader choice of armour.

One fellow I know, due to his service in the military, said he makes girl characters cause he's seen more than enough men in his life. lol

This is interesting, and in my case true. I am female playing all female characters. Once back in the day I made a male character, and found that people reacted different to the different genders, and also discovered I didn't play male characters very well, I guess I don't RP well. I ended up deleting my character because "he" came across a bit feminine (go figure :p) and was harrassed a bit, especially in Fel ;). Interesting the psychology of it all.

According to the 'facts', I'm probably a male ...

UO_gender_distribution_characters.jpg

The oldest one of my characters is a human male and looks crumpled, with few hair left (except the beard of course) and rather old ... my only female gargoyle is on Drachenfels and there's no male elf anywhere in my 'house holds' so go figure :D
