Classic Client won't save up my new macros : How can I fix it ?

I have ben having an odd thing happening to me.

Playing a character which I have not been playing in a long time and I made some new macros to use some 2 skills. Even though, after creating the macros I press the buttons "Apply" and "OK" (this is Classic Client ALT+O), they work right after I close the Options Gump but if I close the UO Client, the would not be saved.
Infact, when I restart the Classic Client, the Macros I had made are not there, as if they were not stored upon closing the Client.

Even though I can always redo them anew each time I play UO, this is getting annoying to always have to redo them....

How can I fix it ?

Thanks.

Do you have a character with the exact same name? I've noticed that if you have characters with the exact same name, the macros for them can get mixed up, or even deleted.

Sorry Keynames.txt is fixed, so it's not that, hope you find the reason

the trick to saving your settings is to use the big red "Quit" button on the main login screen when closing the client - don't use the X at the top of the window to close UO

that do not help if it is keynames.txt, that do not know the right spelling. Just logging out and in is enough to save macros if keynames are correct

where are the macros you are making? and how do you log out of the client when you close it? Use 'log out' always.

If you copied that folder from an old computer, you must go to 'documents\EA Games\Classic Client\Acc Name\Shard name\Char name\'

check that the files are not write protected! - that is a default option when you move old files into new operationg system.

PlayerSkill and Mandrake have very good suggestions. You can also make a macro for SaveDesktop. This updates the character's desktop, macros and uo.cfg without needing to log out. If there's a problem overwriting one of the files, e.g. write protection, the game will probably crash.

If all else fails, delete the character's folder (Mandrake gave the location) and redo.

Thanks all for the advice, I will look through the various suggestions and see if I can pin point the problem.

The character has a unique name not shared with another character, by the way.....
As for logging out, I usually always use as a habit the Quit button from the paperdoll logout.

That's the one thing I haven't tried. Yes I am having the same problems as Popp.

I have numerous Jade Characters on all my accounts. To delete those Jade Characters and keep their skills on soul stones for the replacement characters to use, would require too many soul stones and/or months or years of work. :) Usually I do log out but I need to watch that carefully and test to see what results when I do & when I do not log out. Will let you know what results.

A macro that FAILS to stick on ALL my characters is in Interface:
"Run Mouse In Separate Thread".
The mouse arrow will be vibrating and almost impossible to use.
Checking the "run mouse in separate thread" requires restarting your computer to improve the problem. It isn't perfect.

Even after fixing the mouse somewhate, I find when targeting anything, even to open a chest, the target icon sticks so you can't see it come up on top of the target, until you move the mouse off the target. So I am slowed down no matter what I do while PVMing by having to move the mouse off that target to make sure I am firing on the monster. lol

Upon checking my character files many times to copy and paste skills, I couldn't find duplicate Jade characters because they are not listed in the character files, so the option to copy and paste skills to them is impossible. They aren't there!

So how do I handle the problems? I simply do all the skills again and again for the characters I need to use and do their macros over and over again and again.

Too Many Years of UO at least:banana: teaches us to think, solve problems, and accept what can't be solved, work around the impossible, and most of all, to have patience!

Do you mean you have multiple Jade characters, same shard, same account? That can cause problems because the CC saves by name, not character ID.

Yes. I have numerous accounts with multiple Jade characters existing for over 16 years or less and never experienced this problem before with all the Jade Characters until recently. :(
Of course, the combination of this game Account migration nightmare and undiagnosed problems with my new 2010 computer's problems with a motherboard failure last year *(real life busy too), I haven't been able to do much for the past few years in UO. Now that I have a new state of the art computer again to work with, (Jan.2014) a series of new problems and having to learn how to use the computer all over again have been occupying my limited free time. The good news: I am gradually getting on top of how this new computer works finally, am watching these forums, asking questions, and experimenting. I have yet to buy the expansions to up grade this game on some of my older accounts so am far behind in the game.

This macro problem is only one of many problems that need solving before I can get involved in all the latest expansions to UO.

Looks like I have a lot of things to check after reading this complete Thread and all the posts. Testing and Checking will keep me busy tonight. I would like to find time for some fun with on old favorite hunt: collecting Glacial Staves.

this is what I post to popps ...
"the trick to saving your settings is to use the big red "Quit" button on the main login screen"

MAIN LOGIN SCREEN - reading is fundamental (where you type in your password to log in)

and this is what I get back from popps ...
"As for logging out, I usually always use as a habit the Quit button from the paperdoll logout."

QUIT BUTTON ON THE PAPERDOLL - notice ANY difference??? (*facepalm*)

(why do I bother?)

c- HAHAHA - - I think I do the same thing as Popps sometimes ! *chokes*
I use the log-out button on my paper doll. ROFL. Thank you KOJAK .. hugs .. ROFL..

I also have to thank whoever said don't put a space AFTER your ID name. I used to do that too and the client would crash or do something crazy.

Ok, I will tell step by step what I do to exit UO.

When I am done with my playing session, I open up the Paperdoll using ALT+P (Classic Client), then I press the blue button on the Paperdoll that says "LOG OUT" (right below the "OPTIONS" button...). At that point I get a gump which asks me "Quit Ultima Online ?" and I press the green button "OK". At that point, I get the main login screen (the one you posted the pic of...) and I press the red "Quit" button by the top right corner that you indicated.

Yet, by doing this, the newer macros I have made won't get saved up....
The macros I am trying to save are "CTRL+<" linked to the use of a skill in UO and "SHFT+<" linked to the use of another skill in UO.

Oddily enough, I noticed that I also made a F12 macro in ALT+O to heal self (Use spell Greater Heal-Wait for Target-Target Self) and this macro gets saved up (that is, if I close the UO CC and then reopen it the F12 macro to heal self will be there, working...). It is the "CTRL+<" and the "SHFT+<" linked to the use of 2 skills in the game which I have to make anew each time I log back into the game as they never get saved up upon logoff......

popps, as I mentioned, make a macro with just this. This forces a save of your desktop, macros and uo.cfg. If there's a problem overwriting the current file, you'll find out, maybe with a client crash.

savedesktop.jpg

There used to be a bug that the desktop wouldn't save on game exit, only on logging out the character, which I think is why we were given SaveDesktop in the first place. The bug has long since been fixed, but I still use it. I have batch files that back up and restore my character folders, in case I mess something up, or a slow UOA load shoves my precisely centered game window to the upper left. If I change a character's desktop around, I'll refresh with SaveDesktop, then run my backup .bat.

popps,

Another possibility is you have the same key defined twice. Scroll thru to make sure there aren't 2 definitions using the same keys.
In this case "CTRL+<" and the "SHFT+<".

I have been doing exactly the same to exit UO.

update: Checking one main old account and all characters belonging to it on every shard using everything possible to make them lose their macros.

I have found:
Only ONE character named Jade is recorded in the UO Character files on each shard.
All others named Jade are NOT being recorded in the UO character files.

So far I manually reconfigure the macros on each unrecorded Jade in order to use the character. Those are holding for the moment but will probably have to be redone sooner or later.

Now to try The Zog Historian's advice to Save Desktop in macro options.

Right, Jade, there will be only one folder per name. But on certain shards, same account, you have more than one Jade?

Yes. On some accounts I have all 7 characters named Jade.
On my first and oldest accounts I named all my characters Jade , each having different skills.
Later I made numerous Jade characters on other shards for exchanging gift items, but sometimes I would work on a Jade's skill for fun and explore the shard.
Recently I've been playing on Atlantic and made characters there named Jade.

In any case, over the 16 years, I ended up with many characters with legendary skills, mostly on all my accounts on Sonoma.

Making new characters by deleting those old Jade characters is insane. Even if I store the skills from the old Jade Characters, on soul stones, I would need numerous 120 Power Scrolls and numerous soul stones, for new characters to use. Anyhow, the new characters with new names would not be strong or intelligent enough to handle legendary skills.

Therefore the only hope is a huge pile of name-change tokens but can we change the character's names?

Yes, or until the Classic Client stops saving character info by name (highly doubtful). Still, you should be able to have common things like macros, paperdolls and the status bar. Something like the backpack won't automatically open, because for each character, it's a container with a specific ID.

When you create the macro do you click the apply afterwards. Every macro you create you should do that.

Yes, I do....

Eventually, I re-did the macros in UOAssist rather than the UO client and so I was able to work around the problems, I am still curious though to why the CC won't save them....

Did you ever try deleting the directory, or making a game macro for Save Desktop?

Actually not yet because I then thought about the UOAssist work around and therefore bypassed the problem...
But I will try it just to see if it works.
