I started UO as a paladin, I noticed that the npc the tutorial sends me asks to train for paladin the skills chivalry, swordmanship, tactics, anatomy, focus, resist spells. Would like to ask if I should stick to increasing these skills(they are in the 60s now, in about) or if other skills are more worth it for shield + sword paladin

At a minimum I would probably swap focus for parry. Depending on your goals and RP style, you may also consider swapping resist for bushido.

If you plan to walk around with a shield, then for sure focus for parry is a smart move.

Once you can afford one, find yourself a "soul seeker" sword. It's a good all around starting weapon for you, if you don't have anything better (I assume you don't).

In the short term, you might want to pick up some healing too, just to help you keep your HPs up until you can get yourself some swords with enough hit life leech on them. That way you can use your mana for better things than needing to Close Wounds all the time.

What shard are you on?

I am more using armor + sword(partly to minor RP reasons - I am not hardcore RPer though) and because I tend to like defensive style a bit. I am playing on Europa shard, took initially 3 days trial a month ago to be sure I liked the game(cause its first time I play UO) and recently I subscribed, deleted the trial char and started a new, if not wrong today its 4th day only on this character. As for close wounds, the only problem at times is either mobs cover me and cant click myself or the spell fails but seems like a very nice healing option. Speaking of which for a paladin, how should I plan to make my main stats(strength, dexterity, intelligence)?

If you are using the Enhanced Client, you may want to try Pinco's UIs, you can find a lot of informations about them here on Stratics at this Forum http://stratics.com/community/forums/pincos-ui.667/

I got a huge problem with Pinco's UI and cant use it because it lags my system so much that my char makes a tiny step every 4-5 seconds so I set it off. And imagine I got a triple core cpu with 16gb of ram and 1gb HD graphs card which should be running the game with extreme ease

I have never tried the enhanced client, so I can't offer any advice there.

As for stats, you're going to want plenty of STR and DEX, and then int is the odd man out. My naked stats are 120 STR, 125 DEX, 10 int. If I could find a +5 more stats scroll to take me to 260, that would probably end up all going into DEX too.

Fully armored I have:
147 str
138 dex
20 int

translating to
139 HP
170 stam
70 mana

You can find some pretty useful shields pretty easily on stuff in shame.

I think I may need more int(for now at least) since I use chivalry a lot and it uses mana, so, I am thinking for 100str 100 dex and 25 mana out of the 225 possible total

Sure, stats are easy to shift around as your suit improves.

Since you're going with 100 dex, you should look at using weapons with their speed in the 2.0 second range, as opposed to katana which is 2.5. Your DPS will be better off to use a weapon that hits slightly less hard, but more often. Going from a 1.75s swing delay to 1.25 is about a 30% increase in swing speed. Moving from a 12-14 weapon to 10-12 is only a 19% decrease in damage per hit.

Since you're just starting out, you're probably not going to be fighting a lot of things that do huge amounts of damage in a single hit/combo, so 150 HP isn't really a necessity quite yet.

You should create easy to reach macros for Target Self, and All Names
This will allow you to not have to find yourself to heal as you can just use the macro.
At 60 skill you can hang around the first level of dungeon Shame, and you should gain fast enough. Also you should be able to find useful items while you are there, even if they may be cursed.
If you do find a ring and bracelet with Faster Casting on them, they will help you cast your close wounds faster which will help you out.

Turn off a panel that shows all enemies around.

By the way, I think it would be hellpfull if you could start also training the imbuing skill on your crafter since later on, it will come handy to allow you to make your own armor and weapons.

It is usefull to start it early on, because after you purchase the initial skill (around 30ish), unravelling the magic items which you do not want to keep as loot, will raise your skill and provide you resources which will then come usefull when you will start creating magic armor using the imbuing skill.

You can find more details at these pages http://uo2.stratics.com/skill-guides/skills-and-professions/imbuing and http://www.uoguide.com/Imbuing

Hi Tuan, I think that you can only take your skills to 125 after that its all items and potions. So your dex is maxed out.

Since you plan on using a shield, do not have Bushido. Your chance to block with a shield can be found here: http://uo.stratics.com/content/arms-armor/combat.php#blockchance.

Bushido + Parrying is very defensive, and may be something you will want to explore later. I have a 1H Weapon/Shield/Parrying Paladin and a Bushido/Parry Samurai (switches between 1H and 2H weapons). Both are highly survivable and enjoyable to play.

You may also want to begin training Healing. It allows you to heal/cure yourself with bandages, no mana required. You can also heal/cure/resurrect other players (called "cross-heal" when two characters are healing each other). I consider Healing an essential skill for all of my fighter-type characters. Here are the details: http://uo.stratics.com/content/skills/healing.php. Training Healing will also give gains in Anatomy. There is a "Bandage Self" macro built into both clients, so targeting will not be an issue.
