How can you stand it on Atlantic?

I'm talking about the freezes that keep getting me killed. I started a mage on Atlantic a few days ago, as an experiment to remind myself what it's like to start from scratch as a new player with no support from my other characters (which are on Legends with no transfers).
I've worked up to killing cyclops and titans, even managing to take down some paragons when the EVs kick in. It's going fine - a lot of fun, in fact - except for one thing - I died four times yesterday and today after my screen froze up for several seconds. Of course the monsters didn't freeze up and killed me while I stood there. I can't ever remember this happening on Legends with the same EC client.
Of all the reasons for a new player to quit the game the first week, I can't think of any more aggravating.
You who play on Atlantic, do you experience this? How do you put up with it?

I have not noticed it at all - but I've been in game less the last week due to RL stuff. Have you run tracert a few times to see if you can catch the lag happening and see where along your route to the server it is?

I don't know if you'd call it lag, but you might be onto something, since the data stream suddenly gets interrupted somewhere along the way - probably not happening on legends because that's a different route. If I were a new player, I'd have to be pretty motivated to go to all that trouble.

Yadd is correct, there is at times a server freeze or to say hick ups affecting various people. It maybe network related on the server.

I never have lag on Atlantic, but completely agree with Marquis de Sade, if there were a choice it wouldn't be as bad since we could just move shards to avoid the troublemakers....but there isn't that choice, the only way to have a large group of people to play with anymore is to be on Atlantic, with all it's general chat fighting, cheating accusations, and troublemakers (most of them are from other shards and moved there due to low activity on their home shards)

I get the same problem. I think for the most part its me being in the UK/Thailand and having a bad connection. My ping is ALWAYS 160+

I often lock up for minutes at a time, then everything suddenly springs back to life and shoots around all over my screen. I try and PvP sometimes but it just gets frustrating.

I obviously get a better connection to Europa but I really enjoy playing on Atlantic. Great group of friends and so many people around. Its just a shame other shards are not so busy. Some people say they like the quiet shards but I'm the total opposite. It's Ultima Online, the greatest MMO ever!! There should be people everywhere!

Yadd, happens to me on Legends too. 2-3 second freeze-ups, then when you jump to current status things are all different,sometimes I'm dead, sometimes they are... Doesn't seem to matter what facet, or what I'm hunting.

Putting a large segment of the internet into a few servers called the cloud wasn't the brightest idea in the world.

It is wide open for internet attacks.

I haven't been experiencing any lag on Atlantic, at least nothing aside from the usual UO lag I get on every server.

I spent a couple hours killing cyclops and titans tonight on Atlantic again tonight, and no freezes this time. So if my experimental new player didn't rage quit with all the freezes yesterday, he or she would be in a better mood today.

Now I died on Legends when the screen froze up tonight, so I amend my earlier statement that "it never happens on Legends." Something's going on, because I don't remember the last time this happened on Legends. I'm plugged into a DSL modem with a network cable, so there's no possibility of wireless interference on my end.

Yeah, Atlantic has been experiencing some lag problems, and it's not just me. I'll be on vent with guildies, and we'll all start pancakes about locking up with lag in UO at the same time, even if we're in different areas.

Hello,
I got a new laptop and I noticed "freezes" when I was only running UO. I changed all my power options to maximum performance (making sure there was no power saving on the wifi) and the "freezes" stopped. Might be a coincidence, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Psychosomatic or coincidentally, today I'm getting occasional pauses on Atlantic when running at full speed. Pings are mostly fine, 60s into the 70s, but once in a while they spike to 170+.

I've had some on Lake Superior. It hasn't been too bad though, but I'm gonna chalk that up to my new computer. On my last computer, it was bad, but some times worse than others. In 2007, I'd frequently lock up for "forever" - I can't remember how long it'd be, but if I was ANYWHERE that had monsters or players, I'd be a dead man.

Currently, I just get 2-3 seconds of lockup, but it doesn't happen too often.

Started UO in early 2002. From there to now, I've used a 56kbs modem, an ISDN, various DSL things and currently a 20mbit connection. 12 years. Over half a dozen different ISPs and computers. Windows 98, XP, Vista(gnhh) and W7. In no set up has Atlantic been so lag free for me that I'd consider doing either PvP or genuinely challenging PvE in there. Constant lag and freezing. Banksitting can be done there. Not much else. During all of those years, Atlantic ocean has been there between Atlantic and myself, too.

Start doing trace route to Atlantic and other servers. Then determine where the lag is!

I run from norway, some days the lag is notable, - but its not in EA or Orign system, its the route i use.

Mostly all servers are running nicely, i just got a bad route to the server - so check yours.

^ I'm touch more East still, in Finland. I wager it is combination of sheer distance and UO just not being that graceful in dealing with lag. It is not a bad route, just very long one. Generally speaking,time I'd meet undeniable difficulties with connection to US is long gone. I seem to recall even SWG working fine way back when. HD streams, download speeds, modern MMOs it's usually all good. Do you get a decent connection even to Japanese servers?

I ran a trace route once, saw some problems and then called AT&T to asked them to look into it. The tech support person told me AT&T couldn't do anything about it. So what's the point of running trace route?
