While training tracking in Luna on Atlantic I found this symbol person on tracking:

Could we make character names using symbols in the olden days?

Oh I found this symbol person on tracking just before server down.

Saw it before this same side of Luna a couple weeks ago.

Thanks for that I have 2 accounts up so off I went to test shard to make a lil and see.

My lil had a dot on top plain to see, so had to make another lil, 2 computers, in case it was 2 different fonts.

I could have saved myself the trouble because once I magnified a screenshot (I took 4) of the tracking I had done I could see the other characters on tracking who had i in their names, or even j, the dot was plain, symbol person there is no dot.

So no, magnify and you will see astrid has a dot in their i, symbol person does not.

I did think it might be the in-game vendor search script comparable to the old what was his name, oh yes, plague. (new names now running round Luna collecting sale item data).

The official vendor database will not need to go out and collect data in the same manner the unofficial ones do. This is because we are talking about a query from UO to a UO databse. The data is there, someplace. The problem is getting it to us in a useable format in a manner that is useful.

Given that the official vendor search is gamewide, doing it in the same manner as the unofficial vendor searches would be wildly, wildly impractical.

No one is suggesting an actual UO character running around to collect the data, just that it be available via a website. We haven't been told details of how the search is supposed to work, but I wish we were so that some of us could have offered design suggestions. There are two ways I'd do it. To make an item findable almost instantaneously, and conversely an item removed or purchased won't be listed, then for efficiency's sake, vendor items would have their own separate index. Alternatively, a vendor search could query the shard's item database every __ minutes to refresh the index. Either way, the index could be available online as well as in-game. Imagine someone at work doing a search on a break, then calling a spouse: "Hey honey, there's a ___ for sale at a great price, can you go get it if you're at home?"

It's not like vendor items are changing that often, even on the busiest shards, so the first method would probably be more efficient, just like a physical library doesn't rebuild its card catalog every time it adds a book. The game would just need safeguards in case of punks who think a bunch of them can script rapidly putting items on a vendor and pulling them off, e.g. no more than 100 items put on or taken off per unique character per hour.

Regarding the small I with no dot, that that is not a symbol, but rather is a totally legitimate separate letter in the Turkish version of the Latin alphabet. They have two i's - i and ı.

Seems like the mystery has been solved. I was happy to know, when I started, we could use an excess of periods within our name ;P. Other than that, I do not believe special characters can be used.

Anyone remember when you could click on a house sign and see the special characters, and some would play music?

Indeed no one is recommending that this should happen, which is why it's good that my post in no way suggested that someone was recommending that.

Rather, I had read slave girl's post as her saying that she thought the character she saw was gathering data for the new vendor search.

Looking over her post again now, though, I see she more-likely was suggesting that the character she saw as a search site bot.

So I'll take the blame for a good part of the confusion, surely, but not enough of it to somehow link my post up to the debate over whether the search should be in-game or via a site.
