As we all know, UO is such a tight knit community, friendships made in game are often just as strong as friendships made in real life, sometimes even stronger. Unfortunately we all also know that the game is much smaller than it once was, so everyone has lost some of their good friends along the way, many of my friends have chosen to quit the game over the years, and once a friend is gone the game seems to slow down and become less fun for a while, eventually we make new great friendships and the fun comes back, but we never forget our original friend, for this thread I was hoping we could all share a story or two about a friend that was a big part of our lives for however long they were in it in game.

I used to know a guy named Tristan before trammel was created, met him during a guild pvp war (back when those were huge) in the midst of the battle no one noticed our ghosts to rez us, so even though we were on opposite sides we began talking out of boredom, as it turned out we had quite a lot in common, we even had houses near each other in the Trinsic area. For months we adventured together, explored together, and learned as much as possible about the game. Unfortunately, due to the creation of Trammel, after 2 years, thousands of monster battles, hundreds of pvp wars, and tons of memories he decided to end his UO quest and quit the game. As far as I know, he never returned, but I will always remember him fondly and hope I see him again one day.

I once knew a young man whose main character was called Valen Valerian. The guild he belonged to was (I think) called "The Fire Society" and was one of the earliest guilds on the Chesapeake shard. About the time Trammel was born, this young man (who had been a university student in the U.S. and was having problems finding employment here) was denied an extension on his visa. Last I knew, he had to return to his home country of Iran. He didn't want to go back, but he had no choice.

I only knew him in-game and through chats in ICQ, but if he was, in real life, anything like the character he played, he was kind, highly principled, and very courageous. I still think about him to this day and hope that he is alright.

A RL friend got me into UO back in the fall of 1997/spring of 1998: At the time, we were normally playing Goldeneye on the n64, but his brother came home one day with UO and began to play. We both were amazed and hooked instantly. I didn't have a capable computer at the time to run UO, so my friend let me make a char on his account and id screw around for a lil bit whenever we hung out. Pacific was the only server available when he made his character, so that became my home as well, to this day. (even though we live outside of Chicago lol). Eventually, my family upgraded the computer to something comparable to a smartphone by todays standards, and I was able to run UO. Yes back in the day, connecting with a 28.8 and AOL 3.5 there was a lot of lag at times, but I stuck with it.

That summer, I was going into freshman year of high school. I got my own UO account July 9th 1998 and set it up at 1:09AM. (scarry how I can remember the EXACT date and time). Made a toon, and logged in.. proceeded to run up to the Minoc spawning grounds (if anyone remembers those on Pac). Ran around for a lil bit, then my dad yelled at me and told me to go to bed. 4 hours later, I was awake and playing again lol.

My friend and I played pretty consistently for about 4 or 5 years after. Ran a small guild, would do dungeon crawls, build characters.. the normal fun UO things =). About 2003 he started to fade away in-game and eventually closed his account. He go into some console games, and FPS games. We also kinda drifted apart irl.

10 years later, have hardly spoken to him. Not sure what hes been up to really. One of the few times I talked to him, he said he wanted to reactivate his UO account, but the account management site is garbage to begin with, and he cant even remember his account name or pw.. so I think he just gave up.

A friend and I had been mowed down by PKs in Covetous. Outside, we met a guy "satan" who said he had also been PKd. Initially I was wary because of the name, but we made our way to town together, and Rich quickly became a true and loyal friend. Players who have only known ethereal mounts, insured and blessed equipment, runebooks, and most of all "My character is physically stuck," don't know what a pain it was to make it out of a dungeon and back to a bank! It was also a time when not many players could gate, let alone res. A master mage was a powerful character. Even if you found a wandering healer in the wilderness, even if you avoided the notorious crossroads, you might still find yourself running from an ettin or PK.

He was from Australia and couldn't order T2A when it came out. I bought a CD and mailed it to him, saying he didn't have to worry about paying me back. When I told my dad as an example of this new age we were entering, he thought it was a stupid thing to do for someone I didn't know in real life. A couple of weeks after Rich got the CD, I got a letter from down under, with U.S. money. But a couple of years later, he quietly disappeared from the game and ICQ. I started worrying after a couple of months and set a user-online alert for ICQ, in addition to checking the event log. His ICQ didn't sign on for a full ten years. The one night it did, I excitedly said hello. We often talked about real life, and there was so much to catch up on! No reply came, though, and whoever it was quickly signed off. Maybe it was someone who found an old computer.

Ged was one of my first guildmates and was starting to become a good friend when he got deployed to Saudi. I never heard from him again and always wondered.

I too have some life long friends from the game. Baja shard .. Jakal I have played with for many years... made guilds and hunted.

I have grown up with him since I was 15.. now 30 still in contact via Facebook... we know eachother by real name but still refer to eachother by our main char names due to .. well that's our names lol.

He lives in Missouri I live in California...

Even his rl friends know me by the name of Azmodan Beguile...

I have a few more but have spent most of my time with him.

Hat goes off to those I will never forget... Method Man and Vlad from Baja.. met irl ... lost contact have them on icq and waiting the day to see then pop up.

Dee and Guildies brothers irl and great people.. and best friends to me.... I have talked too on icq but no longer play...

This game has created rl opportunities to me. I had a guildmate send me to college from a tax write off.. since his son was taking a year off... I know the creator of godaddy... was a guildmate... helped me make the illuminati guild website years ago.

he is now busy with well being rich. haha.

I can't count the impact this game has made on my life.

When I first started back in UO:R the game book told me pretty much not to talk to or trust ANYONE. Not to let anyone near me.... and for the first few weeks I didn't. Then I meet a fella who was real nice. He and Bowen and I hunted in the Britain Cemetery while training skills. I wish I could remember his characters name but I don't ..... I do remember IRL his name was Gal and he was from Israel. He was the first of many young fella's to ask me to marry him. Sweet young thing. I couldn't of course take him up on the offer. I think I heard once a while back he'd come to the US and was in Florida or something ..... but never really heard anything after that.

Bowen was a dear friend he and his wife/gf Wind. I still remember their little Villa near Minoc. I still have a few pieces of armor he made me back in the day when he finally GM'd his smithing. They were such a nice couple. I often wonder how they are these days.

Then I met a young fella named Alex... Alex was the councilor of Yew at the time and belonged to the Yew Militia and Yew Town Council. Again sweet young fella.... but he showed me all about RP on GL's. Taught me quite a bit of the history of GL RP and a whole lot about the history of the game and many of the seer events of old. We took several tours of the Fellucan lands.... But after awhile he went off to college and UO was no longer where it was at for him and he left. I miss him a lot. There were a lot of dear old friends from back in the early days I miss quite a bit.... Likathadeale, Lifestar, Poet, Mord... Rascal... Prophecy, Pheonix... the list could go on and on and on...... Ghislaine! Miss her a lot.

But then there are still many old friends who are still with me. They are what keeps me here.

I met Phoenix at the first battle of Trinsic. We were standing side by side on the landing above the West entrance and he started telling me some of the lore of those we were battling. From that point till he was no longer in the game he always had my attention when he wanted it. His simple house near the hedge maze was filled with books and I spent much time there.

Yeah, I miss him and all that he did. *raises a glass and toasts Phoenix*

He was the one who performed my marriage to Polynikes of Yew, when Willa and Poly wed. Was so awesome. He was a hoot and I loved him for it. And he had loads of awesome books and knew all the history of things.

Well Bunny, In game most are fro RP'n while in RL its usualy something young people do to feel a part of what has been made to be expected of them when they fall in love. Mind you marrage is in itself a noble thing... but not meant for all. Originaly it was a contract binding lands, money and power of two different houses using children and mates as the proof of said contract. Love had little to do with it.. But all things evolve and change meaning.
I have known many in this game... too many to list off. Also we dont have all day to read my silly list.
But be it known I miss all and wish them the best in the RL. Some dear friends have passed on to the big game room....
Right now we need our friends... I log in and find single players or small numbers chatting but little play...
I miss dearly Provo dragging me to every horror filled corner of UO's deep dungeons and pits of Hell...
Skullcrushers kind assurance we can go train our dragons and ourselves in the blood eles...of fel....
The 2 Mikes who had me in stiches every morning on icq as we hunted...
From Napa to Origin... Siege to Hokuto I have known many in this world we call UO.

It's fun in game ....... you throw a party, invite friends, get presents..... eat, drink be merry...

I tried it once IRL... Hated it. Don't think I'll do that again. He'd have to be super..... super special or extremely rich.
When someone asks me why I'm not looking these days, I generally reply, "I'd only be interested if he was rich, generous, and gone twelve months of the year." :p

Tried to date..... optimum word was tried.
1 told all of how good a wife he was geting when he would marry me.
This was til his new boss asked him out and hinted she was well off....
They now married.
He is her boss now and he sends her out to work in another major city 5 days a week so he has his house clean his way and all assets are in his name...... She can keep him.
Sorry I digress.... Marrage is a wonderfull thing but it has its draw backs.
Personally someone tell me how to rehydrate the man in the can... I want him back he didnt have my permission to leave in the first place.

In all my years of playing UO, pretty much exclusively on Atlantic I've come across many wonderful people and guilds that are all long gone and I've lost contact with... But I will always fondly remember.

The Kingdom of Stormhaven. The Stormreaver Orc Clan. The Kingdom of Sanctus. The Atlantic Roleplay community as it was from 2000-2004 or so before it began to decay away after the release or WoW.

Stormhaven was my first experience in roleplaying in UO and the Atlantic RP community was amazing back then. Many guilds with different politics and goals, guild wars, logging into UO was literally a new experience every day and I never knew what I was going to expect when I came home and logged in that particular day...

I also fondly remember the friends I had in the Companion program. Particularly the SRC who mentored me when I first started. SRC Actaeon. and Arch Companion Morgana. Those were fun times!

Aw! *hugs*

My Ex died too.. but at his own hand. I left him because he liked drugs and put drugs and dope over family and his children and wife. I'm still here..... his kids are still here.... and he is gone. Not a death I would wish on anyone... nor do I wish anyone else to go thru losing a loved one to drugs.

What was buried in the ground was a shadow of the man I married. When we married he was fit, muscular and proud... when he died he was thin, worn and beaten down. He couldn't face his children and for the last year of his life he quit visiting them because he was ashamed of what he'd become.

I too would give quite a bit to have back the man I married. But he died when drugs took his life.

Alone I've been ever since and many of my friends feel the need to have a "man" in their lives. They feel they are not complete if they don't have one.... and they don't seem too picky about it.

But me I guess over the years I've come to like my single life. Now that my kids are "grown" ..... I still have one at home but he's "special" in that he has Ausbergers.... and will probably always live at home. But I like knowing where my money goes... even if it don't go as far as I'd like.... I like eatting when I want, sleeping when I want, the no snoring.... no stinky socks on the floor, no one leaving the freaking toilet seat up in the middle of the night... I like having "my car" which only I drive... never having to readjust my seat.... not having to watch sports ..... or freaking wrestling.... (not a sport... more of a show)... I like deciding what to watch on T.V. or not watching T.V...... I like not having anyone tell me I'm on the computer too much...

I miss having someone around to open things.... or to help me fix stuff. But I don't think it's worth the hassle.

I really enjoy RP and UO and I don't need anyone telling me I can't play it when I want or who I'm "allowed" to RP with.

Yes it would be nice to have a second income... but I think I'd rather just have a roomate who paid half the bills and kept to themselves in their part of the house.

I remember the first person I met in UO. I had just started playing, a newbie to UO and gaming! I spent two weeks looking around Haven (had no idea how to leave) and never saw anyone "interested" in a conversation (only NPC's). I was just about to call it quits and figured gaming was not for me, when appeared a woman on horseback, riding towards me from a distant. To this day, though her character not played by her mom, we are still great friends. We have visited as well as keep in touch by phone. A story I wrote in remembrance of our game time friendship:

The evening, bitter and cold, bit at Tawny Eyebright’s ears like an annoying gnat. She had traveled to this unknown land unaware of her habitant and certainly not dressed appropriately. Scantly clad, she shivered as the icy grip encompassed her. Armed with a bow and few arrows, each corner rounded brought the promise of a new adventure. The moon hung above illuminating the outline of the town just a stone’s throw away. A few odd characters seemed busy at work preparing for some closure to their day, dousing the flames that once flickered in the fireplace and readied the closing sign.

It was obvious that Tawny was going to find her bed to be a pile of brush once more; her eyes darted towards a clearing not far from the mapmaker’s store. Her gypsy roots were exhibited through her uncanny inclination of discovering a bed from whatever available when night fell. Wearily pushing forward, her legs felt like they were dragging a weight chained at her ankles. As she turned yet another corner, a figure appears in the distance. Fearing it possibly more of a mirage than a fellow being, she felt her heart spring with hope. Maybe this was someone who would help her, someone even that might speak her language. The villagers all seemed to look at her with a blank stare when she spoke. She watched at the shape drew near; it was a pretty young female on a handsome mount.

She was dressed in blue ensemble that was crafted quite expertly. Her eyes sparkled and her white braided hair hung down around her face. The mount rose on its hind legs as he approached sensing a stranger. With a touch to his mane and a soft whistle, she swiftly calmed him before speaking. “Hail!” she said, “Might you have a name, I am surprised to see anyone here about this time of night. Tis not safe for a lady to be traveling alone.”

Tawny’s first reaction was one of disbelief in her fortune, rendering her speechless, but not for long. She replied a bit shyly at first, “Hello milady. My name is Tawny. I have traveled far and have somehow lost my way. Might you direct me to a place that is both cheap and warm for a safe night's sleep.” Eyeing the clearing, she has spied earlier as her bed for the evening, she waited for the young woman to reply.

“I am Jaden Moon of The Celtic Kindred Clan. I was just on the way to a meeting; you are welcome to join me. I am sure there is plenty of food and wine there and you do look hungry. Perhaps we can see about getting you a bunk as well for the night. Tawny hesitated only a moment before offering her hand to Jaden; it took what little strength she had left to boost her leg over the horse’s back. Grasping the sides of the saddle, Tawny began her journey, not realizing that this was the beginning of a long and delightful friendship that would grow strong, weather many storms, discover various experiences and build countless memories: Kindred spirits!

I often wonder about a great number of people that I used to play with in the Atlantic RP scene from 00-04ish. All of my old guildies from OES, the regulars from Rivendell and Fogwood when both places were still crowded every night, people from Stormhaven, 2ST, Caina, the Trinsic Council of Honor, Britannia War Council, the TWP project. So many good memories with so many good people. Before that, though, I was in my first guild, EpB (Empire Pax Britannia), with a close knit group of people Robert and William Bruce, KAISER II, Hulahn, Gotor, Gabriel Goldleaf. I spent the better part of two years hanging out with those guys at the guildhouse and then the guild disbanded. Some quit the game, some moved on, and none of us kept in touch. I find myself wondering about them the most.

My fondest memory of a person whom I met in UO is short and brief. It was around 1998 outside of Trinsic and I had met and spoken with a blacksmith who RP'd better than I. It was another laggy morning as was the norm back then and I commented thus in my best speak of the current era to the extent of "F#$% it's laggy" to which he replied "Aye, the air is thick and making movement slow". I never really knew this fine gent not do I recall his name, his smithy was broken into a month or so later and all his work was taken causing him to close shop and never to return but that one meeting left a impression which I have never forgot.

RP Taverns were something else back then. I remember when The Citadel of Stormhaven was the main tavern of the community where everyone gathered and some sort of new adventure or drama would regularly occur. My favorite is when the orcs would stop by and kill everyone inside and then we'd counter raid the fort lol. Talon never did put up with their shenanigans and would rather solve problems the only way they understood, with an axe to their face. >:]

I remember the one time this happened Greypawn and MTC got all angry about it and unwarred the Orcs for a while. Oh Moonglow...how silly~~~

I've managed to keep up with a lot of my other old guildmates, thanks to facebook. But Iber was a special case. He was the one that, when he was hunt leader, usually took the guild to places where everybody died. A mage archer that had his playstyle, and precasting down to a rare art form, he was most troublesome in deuls against my pot mad 7x dexxer swordsman.

I doubt to my dying day I will forget the carnage that ensued on the night AoS was released, and houses had been placed, we took off to Doom, got into the main entry way and his words were, "Let's just go south."

He even managed to pull off his interview with Lady Lust prior to our participating in the Tournament of Champions, in character. We practiced for weeks taking out the dexxer first and were on the phone (no ventrillo yet) when the flag dropped and he says, "I think we need to kill the mage first, that guy has a spear." I think we lasted about a minute before our screens were both gray.

Good times man, good times.

I bought UO the day it shipped, but didn't sub because I was livid there was a sub! Games with subs, what a concept. By March my RL gaming friends finally talked me into trying the 30 day trial. Being a creature of habit, I created my first character like every AD&D character I first created... a swordsman. They take me out south of Yew to train on a grizzly bear.

So there I am in all my newbishness... swinging away at the bear who is pounding me into submission. Six friends kept me bandaged and healed, and telling me to keep working my skills. Finally, my swings get the bear low on health and it needs just one more hit to vanquish it. Of course my friends being who they are... healed the bear (you could do that then), in my shock I died, and they roared with laughter. That is all she wrote... I was hooked on UO.

We joined as a group with The Dark Wardens and The Adeptus Astaries (APK guilds) on Baja. It was a great time for a long time. Miss everyone.

Lol ! my first character was a clone of my D&D character as well...

When I got my hands on Ultima I for the Apple I copied Ludes over almost exactly from D&D..
