they use to spawn in Trinsic too (the city of paladins) until that shadowlord event where you could kill them.
then they never returned.
now their living quarters and training areas are all abandoned.
the local inns and restaurants struggle to remain open.
even the local townspeople seem despondent without their beloved paladins around anymore.

sad days.

Personally, i'd love to see the Hireling content expanded, and actually make them useful. Make it to where you can hire something like a NPC Paladin, where he has Weapon Skills and Chivalry, which raise as he uses them and you can inspect his skills with a "Report" command. Give us the ability to equip armor/weapons on them like we can with vendors. Have them lodged at Inns, similar to stabling. Maybe even add special requirements to hiring certain advanced hirelings, like Paladins won't join anyone with negative karma, etc.
Currently, hirelings do gain skill and stats as they fight, but there are three big problems with them. Their weapons/armor wear out and break, and you can't give them new equipment. They cannot bond, so any training put into them is wasted when they die. There is also nowhere to lodge them for when you don't want them around at the time.

Nice idea.

You'd have to tie this to a new skill like Leadership. This would determine the number of fighters you could control as if they were pets. You'd need to pay them instead of feed them to keep loyalty. Any who lost loyalty would have a chance of attacking their former employer. Perhaps a secondary skill could be used to reduce their cost. Maybe a melee skill or eval int.

One might also want a new stat like charisma, but this might be asking more than the system can bear.

This idea could use a little discussion to bring out the potential problems, but Playeretc. made a very creative suggestion. Nice.

I see no reason at all you would have to tie this to a new skill. You would have to balance the abilities of the hirelings to keep that from being overpowering, but no need for another 120 points out of our 720 limit.

There are several games that make use of hirelings and do a very good job of it - Skyrim and Neverwinter come to mind. The hirelings have different abilities yet can gain skill through play, and can have supportive or combat skills. It makes some content playable that otherwise you struggle with. This would be especially nice for off-peak hours or on shards that have small populations.

But then wouldn't the devs have to rebalance all of the spawn in the game? Wouldn't characters suddenly be way overpowered? (hint: yes) Adding new abilities without a corresponding trade-off would badly unbalance things. But perhaps I'm overlooking something. Do you have an answer for this?

I would love to have a minstrel hireling who I could gear up and train to run bard songs or discord for me!... Oh wait, I have that with my second client/account. Still it would be a cool addition.

i just wish they would bring paladins back.
they where the best way to train Wrestling up to 120.
those fighters in Jhelom would only get you up to GM, ya needed the extra push from the paladins to see you all the way to 120!

Hirelings should be updated to work like how Mercenaries work in Everquest 1 and 2. Basically they are powerful NPCs that will work for you for a specified amount of time for a certain cost, the higher the rank of the mercenary, the more it costs. And they fill various roles such as Tanking, Healing and DPS.

In UO where there is a wide variety of skillsets, we could actually have hirelings be upgraded and found in their respective cities:

Britain: Bards
Trinsic/Luna: Paladins
Moonglow: Mages
New Magincia: Shepherds [Maybe a tamer hireling instead?]
Skara Brae: Rangers
Jhelom: Fighters
Yew: Druids [There isn't a Druid hireling in UO..maybe a healer/cleric type?]
Minoc: Tinkers [Hireling that uses golems and other contraptions to fight/tank for you?]
Umbra: Necromancers
Termur: Mystics

Would be neat to spend some extra gold and form your own little party of hirelings, maybe limit to one at a time though? They would need to be scripted with new AI however, similar to how faction guards work that actually cast spells in a smart way. My main is a mage, I would like to have a paladin hireling with me to take some heat off me and take some hits so I can spellcast without having to constantly move and toss a few heals when I am needing it.

Nothing would have to be rebalanced. It just means, especially on smaller shards where you can't find a group for anything short of multiboxing, you can actually have an NPC to help you out some and make your own group.

No need for new skills to control hirelings. I'm not talking about making Hirelings as powerful as a Greater Dragon, or even a Dread Warhorse. Afterall, Tamers invest anywhere between 200 - 340 skillpoints into taming/controlling those. Just more along the lines of a Vollem's (bondable) usefulness.
Armor the Hireling up in an all 70's suit, and they can tank a Ogre Lord or High Plains Boura for you with healing, but don't expect them to tank the Stygian Dragon or Slasher of Veils. Give a Warrior type hireling a decent Wep, and he'll dish out some decent damage when trained, but don't expect anything phenomal, just some supplementary damage. Caster type hirelings could have twice their INT in Mana, and regenerate it rapidly (to prevent their damage from totally petering out once they start to get low on Mana).

Yeah I just want them brought back for training. Yeah there are plenty ways to train skills.. but for malee and wres they were always nice after you leave jhelom.

Quick fix. Have them spawn in the mix of fighters in jhelom or bring em back to delucia..

If not no big deal.

Since the time of creating this post I 120ed two malee skills and wres using other methods.

Just don't get why they vanished.
