When you think of role playing, what comes to mind?

When you think of role playing, what comes to mind?

This question is intended for players in general and the role role playing comunity. I hope I have placed it in the right place.

If you asked me years ago I would have answered. Role playing is talking funny, saying things like thee and thou play acting. I have looked up Old English, or Anglo-Saxon as it is also known and tried to talk like that. But in the end I just lost interest.

Recently it came to mind my play style leans more toward role playing. It's not that I talk funny. I mainly stay solo. 98% of the time I don't see a sole, especially on LA. So there is no one to talk to.

So now if you asked me; When you think of role playing, what comes to mind? I would answere.

For me role playing is not as much how I talk but how I Work my character. When I work my miner I take my pack horse and spend hours alone in the mountains digging for ore. Then walk to the nearest anvil and forge to make ingots. My tinker and blacksmith use the ingots.

My archer depends on my Lumberjack for arrows. Generaly the archer will trade feathers and strength potions with the lumberjack/ Fletcher for arrows.

The barter system is part of role playing.

Right, so what is role playing? (to me)
Role playing is diving into your character, it's how you talk. It's the barter system, of trading for your needs. Its hunting for feathers to triad for arrows. It's walking to town rather than gaiting everywhere.

Ok, those are my thoughts. How about you.
When you think of role playing, what comes to mind?

I would pretty much agree with everything you stated.. I also play alone more often than not.

So for me role-playing is basically being n character.. mentally.

I can't say about any of the other shards, but aside from the odd person, none of the RP I've been involved with over the last ten years in UO had people speaking funny on Europa...!

Role playing is about playing your character as if they lived in the world. Immersion. Interacting with like minded folks. Stories. Friendship. Rivalries. It's about huge wars and it's about nights in a tavern or fights in deep dungeons on your own. It's about anything that fits with the UO lore and people enjoy playing.

I agree. All my gals have their own personality and I treat them as different people in game. This does cause a bit of confusion, as I refer to them as a family. Lol there are still people who don't realize that Rowan (my Mage, scribe, alchemist, gardener) is the same person as my younger sister(an often dead tame and peacing bard. Area peace. What is that.) Our mom, Mora( she keeps us, feed, clothed and a bit tipsy) are all the same person. I also play solo a lot on LA. While you won't see us, we are there, just give a call in chat. My Lady Thalia, is always up for getting people in trouble on Saturday . Just let us know what trouble you want . :)

I used to hang around in a dodgy chatroom many moons ago and a certain amount of roleplaying was carried out in there. To me roleplaying means, setting a scene, carrying out a 'scene' and making sure anyone who happens to be watching is having a good time too.

Cheers,

Lucy

Everytime i log in to UO i start playing a role. That's why I come here, to relax, to not mind usual RL business and to do just what i wanna to do. This mage i play is a role 100% of its time, even if i might say things like "lol", "sry" and "afk". Unfortunately I'm no mage IRL :( I dont mind hardcore RP where i need a second rulebook about what I'm allowed to say or not.

When I log into game I'm role-playing.

I see the world thru my characters eyes.

Willa of the Yew-wood, born in Yew, raised in Britannia to learn Human customs and escape the tyranny of other Elves who bannished her family basically excummunicated them forbidding them to be Elves because they helped the humans to settle in Yew and brought about change which also brought the Juka and swamp that plagued the area upsetting most the elves and having them completely close their hidden city. (Which later in ML's was revealed as the elves finally saw the error of their ways and reopened the city and infact opened it to the whole of humanity)... Her family was welcomed back to the elven community... though Willa can not speak elven. She is still a Woodland elf. Bound to her tree and to Yew. She does not like Orcs, (they tend to harm the forrest)... She is fearful of dire wolves... She speaks common english as the humans around her do. She enjoys being the Governor of Yew when she can and she is always worried about her City it's safety and it's people.

Trilla is Willa's sister... but she's more like a High Elf in that she hates humans. She despised her time she spent torn from her family in Trinsic. She spent her exile there communicating with the animal life. She made friends with animals easier. She doesn't care for politics and in general has has bad experiences with humans and males. Generally she loathes all males.... save a very select few. She mistrusts humans. She lectures often on the proper care and treatment of "pets"... She is often guarded by animals she accompanies. She can be bitter and spiteful and will hold a grudge for many years. But since she is the younger of the two... (Willa and Trilla are twins)... she obeys the head of her house.... Willa. Though often she would rather not. Unlike Willa she is not "bound" to the tree... she is a free spirit... which is unusual among wood-elves but then so are twins.

Then there is Malag-aste Hla-ate, Dark Elf... When he first came to the land of Great Lakes he was filled with bloodlust and wanted only Vengeance. He cared for nothing or no one until much later. He now serves as a Knight of Virtue in the Royal Knights of Redemption.... though not necessarily by choice. He sometimes slips and lets his true nature out. But it's hard to suppress 400 or more years of chaos without the occasional slip. He sees the world thru a hunters eyes and with the well tuned thoughts of a warrior. He is always looking for a threat... but as a Dark Elf you had too to survive... Survival meant knowing that at every turn and in every instance someone was out to destroy you... He speaks fluent Drow... writes often in Drow... Curses in drow.... rarely curses in the human tongue. He does speak the human tongue but he loathes it. He's often curious about strange human customs and often is puzzled by human holidays and celebrations. He tolerates them. The only one he's embraced and enjoys is actually Valentines ..... because of his love for his wife Severn.

So to me RP is about playing UO thru my character... doing what they would normally do.... Malag surely would not attend a drinking event because it is forbidden for him to partake in alcohol... most especially forbidden is the drinking of Drowish Bloodwyne... much to his annoyance.... and if he can't drink that he'd rather not drink anything. He refuses to eat anything made of "grains" as they tend to upset is stomach. He swears drow were not meant to eat such things. He prefers his food "fresh off the bone"... he does NOT like his meat to be cooked. He has developed a love of fruit and vegetables however. Especially ones grown in the ground, potatoes, carrots, turnips etc... He also likes mushrooms. He will not eat candy, cookies, or pizza. (Pizza made him ill once and henceforth he has decided it was the grains in it... that made him ill) As Willa would never compete in anything other than an archery contest.... she does not "hunt" nor does she kill for sport. She will defend herself against attack but the only thing she will actually purposefully attack first and on sight would be a dire wolf. She still has nightmares of them dragging her to the ground and spending weeks recovering from her near mortal wounds. She recalls losing everything she had to a pack of them... and ever since fears them. Trilla would be more the huntress... she enjoys hunting with her animal friends and protectors.

To me RP is not about Thee, Thy and Thou...... It is not speaking the Kings English of early Saxony or trying to create early Saxony in Sosaria... It's about only seeing the world thru your characters eyes..... Your character can not "See" a Guild tag but they might see the emblem of a Guild emblazoned on your cloak.... or hat or what have you..... the character also can not "see" your name floating over your head so often will ask "Who are you?" And will take you at your word if you lie about it. If you wear a cloak that hides your face they will not recognize you..... except maybe find your voice "familiar" in some way. They have no idea what a TV is or if you have to AFK they don't LOL, they *laugh*...... they also don't :) They *smile*.... They emote actions rather than LOL or anything of that nature. And if I have to go AFK they "pardon" themselves and I might say in vent or icq that I'm AFK a sec...... Or I might just say in vent "AFK a sec phone" and we will just resume RP when I return. My character knows next to nothing about the RL world... No cars, no phones, no cites or towns... They know Sosaria and that is all... Some of them are aware that they are on a shard... a replica of the real world that has been shattered. They may even know or have traveled to other such shards. They know of the facets and such... Some are old enough to have remembered the shattering... and know the feeling of being split into dozens of pieces...

Hopefully this helps clarify. There is no big mystery to RP ..... it is what you make it in the sandbox that the DEV's provide for you.

Role playing is about playing your character as if they lived in the world. Immersion. That fits, What amazes me is there are, other like minded folks in game. Very cool.

Lately I think I've been role playing playing an ant, mindlessly scurrying about gathering resources - maybe a warrior ant

Ahh yes, i remember the Automatic Breakfast Machine (ABM) threads of long ago hehe..

To reply to the OP, I kinda half-assed roleplay. Like, i try and stay in character as much as possible, say during EM/player events and such.. using correct spelling and grammar and what-not.. but i usually talk normally in gen chat, or when conducting business.

Heres a fun one: Make a new character, and try to roleplay from the start, always staying in character no matter how much game knowledge you have.. Pretty fun on a rainy day =)

I'm glad to see that the deliberately simple, basic, and inclusive definition of role-playing I typically have adhered to is at least slightly more popular than I'd always thought.
