Ideas for new expansion

Some of these ideas may be regurgitated, forgive me for having a busy real life and not scrolling past posts. I have always felt that Orc's would be a great playable race I am sure others have felt that way too. Some roleplay Orc's anyway with the help of the Orcish Kin Masks, this could cut out the need for that. The Orc Dungeon showed that the Orc's are decent crafter's and an Orc "city" would show that. The expansion could be based around this idea and would also bring new crafting items, dungeon(s) and BOD ideas like mining for instance. Filling mining BOD's could bring about some good reward ideas. It would also give more purpose for lesser used ingot types as the BODS such lower end items could be higher use (250,500, 1000) pickaxes and shovels (not sure if they would like this idea due to scripting), and higher end items a mining cart, that holds 1000 ore and nothing else but ore. Of course Bowcraft, TInkering, and Carpentry could all use BOD's and powerscrolls as well, although that may be overwhelming for one expansion. Any ideas would help as I have not had time to sit down and write everything out. Let the flames begin :p

All the existing playable races have pros and cons. What would be your 'pro' for an orc race? and what would be your 'con'?

I believe the Devs said they do not want to introduce more BODs, which is why bowcraft and carpentry runic tools come from Heartwood quests.

Why do you wish to take other craft skills above GM? Fitting enough skills onto a carpenter to be able to craft the muli-skill items like instruments, beds, anvils etc is already very difficult.

I think perhaps the quest system may be a better source for the rewards you seek. Multi-tiered quests requiring significant effort on the part of the crafter to achieve the reward.

Pro's for an orc race
Something new, there would be new quest's, new city, orc's have a lot to do with UO lore, back in the day there were whole guilds that roleplayed as orc's this would definitely respark interest in that
con's
Implementing the fine line between good orc's and bad i suppose, although they did that well with gargoyles

You may be right about the quest systems and powerscrolls, templates are crowded enough as is though
@Vor. The Orc Dungeon showed Orc's do have Dwravish ingenuity so yes I suppose they would be like dwarves in that sense
Just throwing up ideas I am always looking for better ideas for expansions as well

The Orc City should be entirely underground inside caves.

We could have some new player housing inside the Orc City world, more than just 2 plots like in the Abyss. But make the player house plots caves that can only have wall and floor tiles customized in cave colors. Cave Paints craftable by player alchemists who have upgraded to the Orc expansion.

Cave housing would require some new Orc style cave furnitures, simple rock and log and rubbish furnishings, furniture recipes for upgraded crafters here.

I'd be down with some new orc clothing styles. What do they wear? Any old rags they can find? Craftable rag clothing, yes.

Playable Orcs could get a bonus to using large 2 handed club-like weapons since Orcs are dumb and brutish.

Their mounts could be, hmm, thinking overgrown diseased grizzly bears here, unless that is too Lord of the Rings or World of Warcraft? We'd need a reason/storyline for having diseased grizzly bears in the game.

Orcs could be the first UO race to get a special vanity pet, I think it should be a rat or mouse. This is of course stolen straight from World of Warcraft. Vanity pets don't require any maintenance or special storage space, and are highly collectible. Blizzard sells some of theirs for cash, which is the only way to acquire them. But most are from questing. UO really needs to add this. Talk about easy money.

I still would like a Pirate theme pack if not expansion that introduces Pirate as a template (requiring some sailing/navigation skills, weapon skills/brawling skills(wrestling) etc), as well as pirate clothing and a pet monkey that can help fire a cannon and go fetch things off the ground for us.

But I like this Orc expansion idea just as much.

:)

I disagree with turning orcs into dwarves.. (An orc roleplayer)
not really dwarves but if you look at the orc dungeon, the orcs are decent crafters, and not as dumb as they appear. That was my point. Orcs in lore of other games such as Elder Scrolls are known as miners and blacksmiths as well. Besides dwarves would be horrible in UO due to the fact that they are supposed to be shorter, and the characters are small enough as it is. If another direction was meant for orcs it wouldn't matter anyway, as long as orcs are a playable race...

The orc ideas are awesome, and I definitely agree about the Pirate theme. I thought High Seas would have pirates, instead its just mages on boats, without any pirate skills at all...

I disagree about having an orc city in a cave though.. Many orcs live outside in a orc fort somewhere or a small hut (Cove for example;) And there are several in Malas, one in Tokuno(that I know of) many of us roleplayers customization our orc houses to look like orc huts, it feels natural from roleplaying an orc to be outside.. Also, orcs should be treated as an enemy race, someway, somehow, that must happen and the other races should not be able to understand the orcs when we talk, it should translate into orc speech..

If they were to add Orcs for players to choose as a race to play they may as add Trolls also.

They could redo some of the facets to make Orc and Trolls cities/towns/villages/camps or how you want to call it, that aren't used as much.

Only other games I have ever played that has Trolls as a player race is Warcraft, EQ and DAOC. But orcs, orcs are EVERYWHERE as a player race (Warhammer, Warcraft, Darkfall, Elder Scrolls, Of Orcs and Men) Also orcs have a popular fan-base and many players in UO Roleplay as orcs using orc masks and black speech.. And while Everquest and DAOC never had an orc race, they have had races that are very similar to orcs.. That being said, I support having as many races as possible in UO from meers, juka, trolls, orcs, halflings, half-ogres, dwarves, minotaur, reptilians, goblins and whatever else they could think of adding.. However, Orcs should come before any other new race in UO. Anything humanoid, I support being added in as a player race, I mean hey, they gave us Gargoyles!

I myself have played many of the games you mentioned. DaoC is probably the best out of the games you mentioned.

I just mentioned Trolls should be added as well since they are part of UO.

Not sure about Dwarves unless they have a history with UO. Halflings are LotR thing.

Definitely agree with orcs being added first.

You generally think there is a chance for a new expansion ?
Actually, no. I think from here on we can realistically expect theme packs and boosters.
I also think it would be very difficult to add Orcs as a playable race without offending people who role play Orcs in one way or another. Not to mention widespread accusations of having 'stolen ideas from other games'.

Ha! A while back there was a small discussion on Stratics how other MMO's stole from UO. As I pointed out the very basics of UO was borrowed from other ideas in it's creation. It's not really stealing unless its looked upon that way. The only way it could be stolen if it was an exact copy from another game by art and game mechanics.

Here is the list of races from the first Ultima game:

Humans
Elves
Dwarves - These guys are supposed to still exist even in the "Prime" timeline, so their absence in UO is odd.
Bobbits (Pretty much hobbits) - Wiped out in Ultima 3, but again since we did not have the same events, they should technically still be alive in our world.

Orcs make little sense to be a playable race. First off, they are basically pigs that Mondain turned into humanoid creatures. They were the original army of Mondain, and they are always described as "stupid".

Technically, since in UO our shards are copies of the Prime Sosaria DIRECTLY after Mondain is defeated and the gem is shattered, Dwarves and Bobbits should technically still exist in our Sosaria.

We can exclude Fuzzies, as they appeared in Ultima 3, but vanished after the defeat of Exodus. Since our world is an alternate timeline, we can safely assume that whatever brought them to Sosaria before, has not happened yet or will not happen in our timeline.

Trolls also would be pretty silly in the grand scheme of things, considering all the other options available, and since so few were ever "civilized" in the original Ultima.

We also have the races only found in our timeline, the Meer + Juka. If you didn't want to take the races more familiar with "generic" fantasy, these would make the most sense.

A friend once played an orc for a few minutes. She noticed someone a silver weapon as he sat at the Buc's Den moongate. She polymorphed into an orc, killed him with one e-bolt (pre-AoS), then polymorphed back.

I miss those days, people used to polymorph into orcs and trick the noobs into attacking them while training at the graveyard between vesper and cove. I was one of the noobs that fell for it once.

I will try to respond to everyone who responded to me without quoting and making this post super long.

First of all, no UO player who has been around for a while and seen UO's steady downhill decline in players and paid staff who is also in their right mind thinks there will be any more expansions for UO. But hey, a UO player can dream right?

Secondly, everytime I play World of Warcraft I see something that World of Warcraft "stole" from UO, so I have to agree that unless vanity pets were added to UO and were called "vanity pets" and were exact copies of those found in World of Warcraft, neither Blizzard nor anyone else can complain.

:)

Third, I have to disagree that Orcs should have a new city above ground, simply because it would be different to have a working city; bank, craft shops, provisioner, stable, etc underground inside caves. Just not wanting the same old same old.

Fourth, while I feel I should be bowing down to the last 3 roleplayers who still subscribe to UO, think Massive please. Yes UO doesn't have Massive amounts of players, but any new additions/designs should aim for the masses, rather than the one or two. Besides, if you roleplay, I do not see why any new addition to UO would, could or should change that? Just have to get creative, but then, isn't that the point of roleplaying?

No I don't think we get any new expansions ever again but it's fun to think about simply because UO is the greatest game ever created.

But just in case...

If ever new races are added with new clothing/craftable lines I'd like to propose racial crafting tools. Rather than adding more and more to the current sewing kit menu, as an example, add an orc sewing kit, which since Orcs are crude, should be crude looking and simple. It can only make Orc clothing items. I also think this would be more realistic.

What's a bobbit and a fuzzie! Details!

(My son once found a super nintendo ultima online I think the 6th in the series, but that's the only one I've seen bits of).

While I would love to see Dwarves, Orcs, Meer, and Juka as playable races... the remote possibility of them doing a true expansion anytime in the future is NIL.

Perhaps there will never be another expansion, but that would be a shame. I have played UO off and on since 1998. While I have left to try other games (namely WOW and SWTOR) I find that I cannot stay away from UO for very long. The best friends I ever made online have come from UO and there isn't a gaming community that could hold a candle to this one.

I'd also add that if we do get lucky enough to get an expansion and new race(s) UO should force us to specialize in a single craft skill over being able to make multi-crafter mules.

As in, only Orc tailors can craft Orc clothing, Elven carpenters elven furniture, etc.

With so few players, having your own tailor /smith/carpenter/imbuer/fletcher/alchemist is more a necessity than a convenience, but, really to encourage player interaction, and frankly, to give me less of a headache trying to figure out how to squeeze all the crafting skills onto 2 of my 7 characters, force us to specialize and choose one crafting skill to be good at.

This would require some thought to make sure each specialized crafter can craft something other players need. I think racial crafting specialties and possibly regional bonuses might be one way to do this. Or possibly the Orc crafter is the only one who can make exceptional orc items that can hold special bonuses or colors.

Specialization please thanks.

:)

One vote for Orcs here. Maybe a few benefits- Orcish kin effect (perma), STR and Damage bonus. A few new craft items like a Orcish Bow, Helm, etc.

It would also be nice to get a new spell every now and then for the casting skills. I thought it would be neat to have the insect swarm spell the Meer Mages cast.

I was reasonably amazed and disappointed by orcs NOT being the new race back in ML. Elves in Ultima. Psh. I think Richard Garriot dug a grave just so he could spend an afternoon or so spinning in it before heading to space when he heard of this.

This is just day dreaming but frankly I recon that is the case with any and all full fledged expansion at this point.
I'd like to see
- Classic Client recoded from scratch. Initially and on the surface, in my dream world, this new old client would be nothing more than a loyal 1:1 clone of what we currently have. Underneath the hood is where main differences would be; it'd be written in modern code making it much less vunlerable to exploits. Written in fashion that ensures it can be expanded on with ease, making new features and in-game cash shops and the like reasonably simple to add. Later on, gradually, step by step begin improving graphics, starting from character models.
- Free2Play re-launch of the game. UO already has functions and services typical for free to play games. I'd love to see them taking a step or two further. We need more people., F2P might bring those people.
- Drastically improved new player expeirence. Remove skill grind entirely or something.
- Redone PvP in fashion that makes it inviting for new arrivals. Factions back to life. Order vs Chaos with bases, precense in towns. Remove dungeons and life from Fel entirely;leave it only for vacant housing space for those who insist on staying. Instead, take PvP to Tram in form of Order Vs Chaos Join either: You are now fair game for the opposing faction. Bring risk vs reward of champ hunt(and powerscrolls) to Tram by making number of Order/Chaos exclusive dungeons. Ensure life returns to Tram by preventing Order/Chaos chars from ever leaving to other lands.

Orcs, Meer and Juka could be added to the game with a single publish and minimal art outlay. In fact, these races already ARE in the game...at least in the EC. There are RP faces that you can choose, all Mythic needs to do is allow is give each race its own range of skin tones and a permanent face in both clients. The players can decide what they wear on their own. (since the orcs wear ringmail, the juka wear samurai armor for some reason, and the meer..uhm...skirts?) Just no more of the stupid "X race only" stuff! Add in some racial attributes, or mix up the set from the current three and call it good.

If they want to get fancy, raze orc valley and make it a functional orc camp. Make it a place only low or negative karma people can go without being harassed by the NPCs. Do something similar with Mistas and Mireg, these two cities need a makeover anyway since they're lived in now.

Viola! THREE playable races with minimal effort.

This would work, but most people will whine that they are losing a slot that could contain an imbued armor ring/footwear/sash/hand. People will want their characters to be functional, not crippled just because they want to play a race available through a costume item.

Although, the devs could implement the vanity slot for these items that was brought up during the 15th anniversary event and that would make people happy.

I would take things one step further and end the restriction on using specials while in non-ninjitsu polyforms.
