UO Keeps Crashing For ME--HELP! <3 <3 <3

I have been using UO for awhile now without any trouble (you know, 10 years or so). Then I went to take a nap last night around 6pm est so I logged out of UO. Then when I returned at approximately 7:40pm est I found that the client would no longer work without crashing immediately.

Description:

I am able to enter my username and password and I am able to select a server. I can even select a character! But after that the client hangs for bout 10 seconds before crashing.

I have rebooted my computer several times, I have restarted UO in Administrator. But still nothing.

The first person to successfully tell me how to fix my computer will get ATLANTIC/LEGENDS 5 million gold -or- SIEGE PERILOUS 1 million gold. Thank you!

One of these days I will record how I fixed things so I would have an answer for questions like this from other players. I know I did not jump through hoops like deleting and reinstalling the game. I was having the same problem as you. Now I forget exactly what I did to cure the problem. There is usually a SIMPLE way to fix some major problems. So - -

Are you playing in Classic or Enhanced version of UO?
If in Classic try this:

Right Click on the UO icon on your desktop.
Click on Properties
Click on Compatibility
Change to Run game in Windows XP (service pack 3) That is what I chose.


Not interested in your reward if this works. Just trying to help.

You may have to delete your character profile, and let the game recreate it when you log back in. Corrupt profiles can do that.

Does it crash for all shards and characters?

It does it for every character on every shard, Winter. :( And I'm unsure what you meant by your comment, funkymonkey. :confused2:

I tried running in Windows XP like you said, Jade of Sonoma, but still no dice though I do appreciate your suggestion! :thumbup:

This is all just so crazy because I mean, I can't fathom what I could have done to make it just.. SUDDENLY stop working. Any other suggestions are appreciated as I continue to fiddle with it! :mad:

Have you attempted reinstalling the game? I know it's something everyone hates to do, but sometimes it does work.

1)right click icon
2)click properties
3)choose compatibility option
4)make sure it's running compatibility with windows XP service pack

Weird. Looks exactly like the compatibility issue.

Are you able to log into ANY shards? Does it crash after you try to log in? Where Is the character logged out at?

I used compatibility change = Windows XP (service pack 3) Try all the different compatibilities. I think everyone is close to a solution for you when it comes to compatibility.

I recall also setting something else in Macro Options which had a good effect.

Click on options on Paper Doll.
Click TOP RH Icon for INTERFACE options.
Check Box: Run mouse in a separate thread.

Thought of something else. For no reason I was having problems logging in and crashing .. so I came here for help, and someone asked me, "Are you putting a space after your log-in account name?

Sure enough I would type in my Account Name and hit the space bar. Then I would type in the password. I -was typing fast and adding the space as though I was typing a sentence using Name- space -password.
But I think that might be connected to "fatal Error" messages.

Anyhow watch and see if that is the problem. Do it deliberately. Sometimes the simplest thing can cause a major problem.

Try running the patcher and checking the Perform Full File Check checkbox.
You may have a corrupted file on your install. If that is the case, the patcher will download the proper file from the server.

I've run into this before too. I don't remember the exact fix but it had something to do with starting UO in full screen mode and the display resolution. My display (in control panel) is set to 1366 x 768. And in the uo.cfg file FullScreen=off.

I know this is going to sound very odd but last night I let my computer 'Perform Full File Check' while I was sleeping, er, since I have such a slow connection. I awoke to the news that a patch had failed and the file check had stopped.

Now, that's all well and good except that it seems to have created ANOTHER problem! I can't even get to the log-in screen now because it keeps failing to patch--which is odd, since I didn't know there was even a new patch. Anyhow, I have a screenshot that might be of some help. error1.JPG

Can try to check "Perform full file check" at the patcher before it tries to patch.

Of all the things I have tried, this is the one that made UO work again!! I went into my UO folder and found the corrupted patch, deleted it, then let the patch recreate itself. I am writing this solution in case someone else has this issue.

Also, Ludes, feel free to see me for a reward! But truly, I want to thank everyone in this thread who helped me out. I was apprehensive at first about trying to ask the community for help, but everyone really came to my aide and I thank you. :D
