Ok as the title says, since the intro of SA and the EC client books have NEVER worked properly. I have spent the last 3 days trying to write about 12 pages into a book and have tossed the whole lot into the garbage in frustration. I want to be able to just copy/paste from a word/text doc (instructions) or an excel doc (auction list) into a book so it can then be inscribed/copied and placed on my steward. I want it to be able to be read in both the EC and Classic clients by any player.

In 2d you can copy paste and the text goes over the pages nicely, and it is one step, so as long as your text doesn't exceed the number of pages in the book it copies fine from any sort of document, multiple pages, all nicely spaced with words wrapping as they should. (at least it used to, I don't have the classic client installed any more but I assume it still works fine in that client. I used to prepare my auction lists in excel, then copy and paste the list , generally 30 items, into my book in one go, then copy and paste the auction house rules of etiquette into the back of the book, again in one go, from a word doc. The total was generally between 12 and 16 pages in a 20 page book, fine.)

In the EC however, you copy your text from a doc and it will only paste ONE flipping page of about 12-14 lines and then when you close and open the book it double spaces the lines so that the max lines on the page is about 8-9. The rest of the text goes into the oblivion.

Now Ok, I could deal with this by copying the text page by page to fit 8 lines per page, however nooooooo, each time you open and close the book it doesn't word wrap so yo
u end up with te
xt like this in your sil
ly book

It looks fine when you originally copy it in but then does the above. So then you have to edit it by putting an enter at the cut off text and deleting the spaces til it lines up, open and close, or flip pages and return, and then do the second line as each line you 'fix' then messes up the positioning of the line under it. So basically you need to fix each 8 lines one at a time from top down opening/closing or flipping pages in the book each line.

To add insult to injury, you finally get it done, flip through to make sure it all looks ok, then close your book, come back later after logging out to find that page 2 now appears on page 2 and page 4. Or pages 6 & 7 now appear on pages 6 & 7 and 8 & 9 and pages 8 & 9 have totally disappeared. Or all manor of combinations of errors in the format, generally with pages over written or totally missing. Of course you can't delete a page in the middle of anything and expect the following pages to move forward either. What it does then is just duplicates the stuff on the proceeding pages.

Never have I had a lesson in frustration as the simple task of putting text in a UO book has resulted in.

When is this EVER going to get fixed?

No chance of that, if 2d was the only option I would prefer to close my accounts. Not to mention that it is close to 50/50 now which client people play and you should be able to read books written by people in either client without this hassle.

Books are an integral part of player run events, and they have been broken long enough. Surely it can't be that hard to fix them. A book written in 2d cannot be read comfortably by a person in the EC either. Lines drop off and the text doesn't word wrap properly either.

I just think it would be nice to know if the dev team have any inclination to fix this. I think it being borked for 5 years is enough don't you?

Likely like 99% of bugs it'll be ignored until it causes some game altering issues......

It is very annoying, I agree. I use CC and my husband uses EC, and since we work on events and RP stuff together we have to swap stuff back and forth to get it right. This is what we have found:

- In the CC, you can only copy/paste small chunks at a time from text documents.

- If you write a book in the EC, when you view it in CC the text seems to run off the page and it is unreadable.

- You can't change the author name in the EC easily.

- If you write a book in the CC, don't use a red leaf on it, then read it in the EC, it sometimes messes the whole thing up and you have to rewrite it.

- You can write longer titles in the EC than in the CC.

We use this to our advantage by writing titles in the EC and swapping over to CC to fill the book out and use a red leaf. We pass books back and forth to make sure both clients can read them. We've made it work, but I agree that it is silly that this sort of thing is necessary.

However, MalagAste is probably right. I doubt it's enough of a game-altering problem to be a high priority. If you can, maybe try what we do, switching back and forth. You can run two clients at a time if your computer can handle it; if you have two accounts, run one EC and one CC and pass the book back and forth like I described, or maybe have a friend who runs the CC help you. Nuisance, but doable.

Sadly books will never be fixed for the EC. Its probably not more an issue because most EC players can't read :p Seriously tho, it really is a shame that this hasnt been fixed. I know more people still play classic, http://stratics.com/community/threads/classic-or-enhanced.309699/ but its sad that the small literate population of EC players have been ignored :(
The only problem with that link, and all such polls re EC v CC etc is that the majority of new players that I have met, download the EC and play in that as it is the first client offered on the UO.com client download page. This same lot of new players don't read stratics. A lot of returning players are the same. I am amazed at the amount of players who I talk to on a daily basis that NEVER read stratics. My partner is one such, has played on and off for 10 yrs or so and has never even opened a stratics forum account. The bulk of players I talk to on my shard rarely if ever read Uhall and only come here if and when they have a problem. I suspect this is the same on all shards. All I know is of the 10 or so new and returning players I have talked to just in the last few weeks, and there does seem to be a lot more around at the moment, all of them have said they are playing EC when I asked. None of them read stratics, in fact 50% of em had never even heard of it.

Anyways, this isn't an EC v CC thread, I don't care what client people play, all I know is most new players select the EC and it is not a great thing for it to have such borked up and useless books in the supposedly 'newest' client.

It needs fixing.

Here's what angers me most of all..... EM's want us to use books frequently... To turn in stuff... They know darn well that people in the EC can't... They know that for me to use a book I have to go to the CC... Yet I've forced to time and again for them.

I hate it! I hate using the CC. It's been so long now that I use it I can't talk, can't figure out how to chat, party or anything else in the CC... Hell half the time I can't figure out how to log out without just closing the game with the red "X"....

But like the problems with trading between the EC and CC I honestly doubt anything will EVER come of it. So I'm forced to use the client I hate and keep it on my computer just so I can turn in a book once every blue moon. Stupid.

Text wrapping is my biggest peeve, but maybe that's just not justified.

If you write a book in EC it's readable in EC. This isn't YOUR issue, this is problem of the plebs still using the "classic" client to read your well written prose.

Actually the "bigger" problem is that no they can't read it.... but if they write it.... and I read it before they red leaf it...... I RUINED it for them.

Actually if you write a book in the EC you can't 'read' it in the EC either, the text doesn't wrap, you can't cut and paste close the book and reopen it to have the text in the same place as it was when you close it. If you type directly into a book in the EC you will get about 12 -14 lines on a page, close and open the book and see what you have then. And as I stated in my original post it actually copies pages and deletes others. I intended to originally do the book in the EC, seal it and lock it down, and get a friend to do a 2d book, but after 3 days of messing about with it I tossed it in the bin as I just couldn't get the book to read correctly.

If someone or even BETTER a DEV wants to try and copy/paste the text in my original post in this thread into a book in the EC and have it read in any legible fashion, once the book is saved, opened and closed, especially after logging out and back in to reopen be my guest. Have a go at it and tell me how successful you are. You don't have to be creative or anything, just copy the text up there into a book, should be simple yes?

Call it a challenge.
