Beginner's questions...

Hello,

I started about a week ago. Love the sandbox nature of the game in spite of dated visuals and interface. Community has been outstandingly amazing to a new player such as myself.

Compilation of a few questions - I have spent time on UO Guide but couldn't find a straightforward answer.

1. Issues with Pinco client. I am having a lot of issues (inability to buy from player vendors, graphic glitches, lack of refresh on enemy bars, etc.). I am on Windows 8 64 bits (unfortunately). Any tip or resource for me to figure out how to fix all that. All of these issues disappear when I use the default UI. But Pinco is pretty good and I don't want to do without...

2. Money. What's the best way to make money over near- and long-term. I have been farming arrows from orcs. But that won't get me a $1mm gear.

3. Gearing up. There is a lot of good guides on my build (sampire) to indicate gear. And I have been lucky to find a great guild who set me up with a great starting armor. But I'd like to be self-sufficient. What is the best place to gear up once I make money? Luna, searching items on *****)?

4. Skill cap. Am I going to be capped at 100 or 120? I couldn't figure out what drives the difference (veteran status or otherwise).

5. Necro. Any tips on how to build this up? So terribly tedious so far. And I'm only 50 or so...

6. Dungeoning. There are very few dungeons / levels I can do by myself. The Orc Valley (excl. the Brute), Shame level 1 (but not the wall keeping ogre). Am I doing something wrong? or is that the natural progression for a young character?

Thanks in advance to all who take time to read this.

Reading Pinco`s guides on his site could be very helpfull. :)

Win8 64bit is not an issue. Runs all fine for me.

2. Farming for money is always difficult. It depends on your char and your server. Could be farming for essences in the abyss, hoping for a lucky drop in shame or going for artefacts in the new blackthorn dungeons. Only to mention a few examples. To loot gold from monsters troglodytes or tsuki wolves might not be that bad.
4. Skillcap just got rised to 720 for each char in one of the later publishes/patches. Each skill has naturally a cap of 100 but can be rised with powerscrolls up to 120. Those scrolls rise your cap to 105/110/115/120 and are specificly for a singular skill.
5. Necro on a sampire is not that easy. You prob have to train it separatedly. So pick a necro book, get some lrc equipment and train it first, ignoring that it is only a suplementary skill for you. You need caster stats to do. (Like lots of int and temporarily mana regen.) Once you have done with necro, you can go back to your usual fighting and stat training.
6. Yes, It is. Thought there are additional areas to try. Ice dungeon, parts of Illshenar, new haven mine etc.
3. Most of the guides for sampire equipment are probably indicate that you have your own legendary crafter. Getting a great set from just buying parts from different places is more than difficult. Aside from that there is an ingame vendor search coming soon. (its announced for march.) Other htan that, you probably find better answert o that within your guild. Thought it may take some time until you can provide your guilds crafters with the costs it takes to create an improved version of your actual armour.

Huh... I didn't know this is what blocks the vendor menus. Thanks for the tip.
Alternatively, get within speaking distance of the vendor and saying "Vendor Buy" always works to bring up the buy option.

Hello and well met!

About money, making a fair bit as you're starting is quite hard, specially now that Tram Despise is gone.
Depending on the shard you're playing, you may notice that arrow vendors have quite a steep price for their goods, so one way would be selling them arrows.
Make a basic swords/tactics/anatomy/healing/lumberjacking/fletcher character and hit covetous level 1. Get some basic ringmail armour and an ax and head to covetous level 1 (ask in general chat where there is a public corrupted crystal or go to a moongate, pick vesper moongate and head left. You will find it easily).
Kill all the harpies there (they won't aggro you unless you attack them, so you can control the spawn pretty well), carve them for their feathers, gather some logs, make arrows and go sell to the NPC vendors or make commodity deeds (bankers sell those) with 1K arrows. Each 500 arrows should net you 10K to 15K from NPC vendors. Selling deeds to other players might net you a higher price per 1K.
That's one way to make some starting gold.

Regarding dungeons, you can do Orc dungeon, Solen's hive (beware the acid, you can take the ambitious solen queen quest there for bags of sending that can be sold to other players), Entrance to Wind (infiltrator solens have good gold and don't use acid), Covetous level 1, Shame level 1 (poor gold here, since each kill takes too long), the orc fort near cove, Tram Ice dungeon (there is an Icy ogre lord near the entrance that drop 900 gold and is a perfect spot for farming and training) some of blackthorn's dungeon rooms and New Haven's mine, among others that I seldom use.
Once you're better trained, you can try to hit the Ice Dungeon Icy Fiends (Ice dungeon Level 2) or the White Wyrm (good gold, barbed leather that can be sold to other players). Miasma at the labyrinth is also a good place for gold, and so are the Troglodytes at Painted Caves near Trinsic. They are also pretty good to train past 90 weapon skill, tactics and anatomy. Just make sure you have a way to heal yourself consistently (hit life leech, healing with bandages, etc) because they spawn very fast.

For armour, you'll have to ask around which vendors stock it. I know that at Legends we have one in Tokuno Island. Other than that, you'll have to talk to players with crafters who are willing to take custom orders.
I strongly suggest asking for some starter armour in general chat, stating that you're a new player. Odds are high that you will be given some decentish starter armour, a better weapon and rune books.

Welcome to our beloved game. I hope you enjoy your stay. :)

I started some UO training videos on YouTube (click sig) that can help you get started. They are aimed at new and returning players. In the Paladin Series I explain building warrior skills and farming. As for beginning gear (if you get no assistance from other players) After training your combat skills to around 70-80 you can head to shame and get some good temporary armor and weapons. Sometimes you can find gear worth keeping or selling that can be worth millions.

Degroove, a lot of good suggestions for you. Recommendations depend a lot on your skill level at the moment. If you can post your skill levels, you would probably get more specific suggestions. Whe I first started, I had fun building up a paladin template at cyclops valley and painted caves and then adding necro to make her a sampire later. When it comes time for necro, as has been mentioned, it's easier to do that on a separate character with lots of mana and mana regeneration - and you're not killing the karma on your character with chivalry - and transfer the skill to the paladin with a soulstone (If you're willing to buy one from the Origin store for $10). In any event, let's see your template when you get a chance.

Welcome to UO... I'm working necro myself on a character.. It's slow doing it the old fashioned way..
I basically got myself a Lower Reagent suit and just keep casting Horrific Beast or now it's Wither finally.. You do run out of mana soon and hafta wait for it..

I must say as for Pinco's bars resetting in the options menu you need to have them set to refresh quicker. I honestly don't remember where that's at but I can assure you it IS in the options menu. It's set at a slightly slower rate for folk who have poor connection, bad PC's ...... so go ahead and crank it up to refresh faster.

And Yes toggling the quick loot WILL fix the ability to buy things from an NPC.

As for making money often fighting some of the higher end mobs and such with a decent Sampire is the way to go.

For the suit just ask around in Gen Chat if there is an Imbuer willing to help you out. Many Imbuers enjoy making awesome suits. Some will have you help gather materials for your suit.

Ome want way more gold than they ought to. Shop around find someone nice. Often you can find someone willing to help you with the next step or two up of suit so you can hold your own a bit better and faster.

No you are doing nothing wrong keep working on your skills... they do improve but it's not something you'll do overnight and if it was wouldn't the game get dull. You by the way are capped on your skill levels at 100 until you can get a powerscroll. Often you will have to buy these in Luna off someone's vendor as you're not going to be able to do champ spawns on your own and depending on what shard you are on unless you are in the zerg guild of the shard you're likely not ever going to be doing a Fel Champ spawn. Now some shards are rather dead and you might be able to sneak one or two in here and there but on most shards that would be suicide.

Good luck.

Thanks for all these great suggestions.

Currently I have the following:
Anatomy 92
Parrying 84
Swordsmanship 87
Tactics 83
Bushido 87
Chivalry 63
Necromancy 52

I also have:
Resisting Spells 28
Healing 31
Meditation 61
Spirit Speak 53

I use these last two to build up mana quickly when I grind my necro. But I have meditation on down toggle.

Right now, mana is not an issue to grind my necro because I got gear from generous players with good mana regen.

My issue is more that I am getting whupped in dungeons. In particular, I have a weak weapon (I think).

EDIT:
One question to rebound on something that was said. Let's assume I get a good piece of gear in a dungeon. How do I monetize it? Is there a place where some established players with lots of vendors buy items (at a discount I assume)?

If you want reliable healing, you need to get your necro to 99 so you can stay in vamp embrace form. thats how sampires heal. it boring but i would suggest training it up to 99 before continuing. or heal by another method like bandages. you can get to 99 necro by casting forms only. Cast horrific beast till you get to 60ish, then wither till 70ish then lich form till 99. once you have that down healing will not be an issue.

Another suggestion for mid-level farming for money - Troglodytes in the Painted Caves east of Trinsic.
It's a little scary at first because the spawn is fast, but if you can get in a corner and learn to loot fast and grab only the gold, you can make 100K-200K an hour there. It's pretty good for skill gain too.

Many people will tell you that you are the devil if you do so, but visit Malas Luna, get a vendor there, and go starting to earn your money. There is a very popular site for checking like 95% of vendors out there, but i think its not aloud to tell here *lol*. Ask in GC which site this could be ;)

I would also suggest having resist spells as high as you can go until your confortable playing the template. Either that or avoid casting mobs until your better at using the sampire. I would lose the anatomy and build chiv resist and necro right now. Oh and for damage output on a sword guy, doubleaxe is to notch.

We got a new player joining us which is great. Welcome to UO and I hope you enjoy it like most of us do.
But then I get to the end of question three and see that he already knows about a RMT/Search site. One week old... =/

Focus on getting your necromancy up to 99 or 100.
After that it´s easier to train the other fighting skills as has already been stated here, you heal in Vampire form. A good starter weapon for a swordsman is the Soul Seeker.
Shouldn´t be that hard to find and shouldn´t be too expensive either. Ask your guildies.
Good luck and as Grog always said: Have fun!

Painted caves is definitely a great place to hunt for mid level skill.
Just beware of Lurg and Grobu. Don't venture too deep into it and you will be safe.

Shame is no place for a new character looking to make money off items as they won't exactly know what's good or not. And until he/she gets an imbuer unraveling is also out of the question.

I've always farmed these for startup money. http://uo.stratics.com/database/view.php?db_content=hunters&id=134

They're not very hard and you can make some quick start up money. A 60k deed of arrows will net you a few mil gold selling to players and can be done in a few hours depending how much time you can devote to playing.

You are capped at 100 skill points right now until you can afford to buy powerscrolls. Powerscrolls come in 105, 110, 115 and 120 skill level. This only raises your cap and you will have to gain the skill yourself.

Welcome aboard.

"A Tale of Gold Dreams" by CaT the Legendary Mage.

You just arrived in the strange town of New Haven. You know a few basic skills and have 1000gp you managed to scrape together for your new life. You notice some adventurers around the bank looking to hire an escort to some locations around town for some quick gold. Being bold and adventurous you seize the opportunity to double your fortunes! So you quickly take a few escorts around town to various locations while you get to know the lay of the land and earn 500gp from each escort. After a couple minutes of escorting you find you have 2500gp in bank. While wandering around Haven you noticed the local alchemist is buying empty potion bottles for 30gp each. Having fully explored town you wander up a road out of town a bit. You see a mysterious glowing blue moongate. Your curiosity over takes you as you step into the blue light and you suddenly find yourself in a strange new land called Termur the Gargoyle Royal city. You head into the town to explore the strange new lands. While checking out the gargoyle town you see an alchemist shop and notice empty potion bottles are only selling for 8gp each. So being a bright young industrious lad you do some quick math and buy all the empty potion bottles you can carry and stuff them into your pack. (250 bottles at 8gp each for 2000gp). You run......err walk... back to New Haven tripping over your empties and sell them to the alchemist for 30gp each and now have 7500gp. You think wow! That was easy! If I had a pack horse I could probably carry more bottles. So you head off to the local animal tamer to buy a pack animal and put your plan to work. Half an hour later you are standing at the bank with close to a hundred thousand gold pieces just for carrying around some supplies between merchants. You wonder if the bowyers, blacksmiths, and jewelers might need any supplies. Just as you begin to dream of the easy life as a trader a shady looking fellow approaches you at the bank, "Pssssst...Hey you! Want to buy a special suit of armor that will make you the best fighter in all the lands! For you only 2,000,000 gold pieces!" You think to yourself, "I would be a fool to pass up this deal" And so your adventure begin......

Watch for part two of my ongoing tale! "A Fool And His Gold Are Easily Parted"

Duly noted on the reference to the third-party website. Can't wait to have the vendor search function live, which I just tested on the Test Server and looks very nice.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I did get Necro to 99 (with some carpal tunnel), and got a Soul Seeker at a reasonable price (with some help), and am moving nicely along towards 100 on my combat skills (with the dungeon suggestions above).

Any tips from the community on the best way to acquire 120 (or 115) power scrolls for my combat skills?

I did notice that Tel Mur quests provide a few for some skills (e.g., imbuing). But I didn't see any for Swordsmanship, Tactics, Bushido and Parrying.

Thanks again

You can only get Imbuing, Tailoring, Blacksmithing and Fishing powerscrolls from NPCs.

The other ones are rewards from Champion spawns in Felucca. As you´re new you´ll probably have to purchase yours for now. Check vendors and/or ask in General chat.

Illicit? I'm not a new player but have not considered doing a price check across shards using a third-party search site illicit activity. What makes this illicit? How else

Illicit? OK, I've got to ask. Are the sites themselves illicit, or is using them also considered illicit? For example, somebody messages that he wants to buy 10 void orbs. I want to know how much to charge. I type in Void Orbs in a search site so I can charge a fair price. Is this an illicit activity? I don't know how else I would get the information, especially for other shards.

Was clearly stated in the past, these sites are using methods that are against the rules of the game to obtain their data.

I haven't been around Britannia for a few months and am catching up on the message boards here. I was delighted to see a new citizen. Everyone else is giving you good advice and I don't have much to add to that. I will say that those of us who have been here a long time, started with 100(!) gold and had to make our way just like you. Of course there are faster ways to make gold than some, but part of the journey and charm of Britannia is just that: making your way. After 16 years, I'm still working on skills. But I'm in no rush. It took me over a year to hit 100 in inscription. And I was making scrolls from about the second month on. But I remember that day the winter of 1999 like it was yesterday. It MEANT something.

Enjoy the journey. I'm glad you found your way to a good guild. They are invaluable to new folks like yourself. To learn, ask them questions. When no one is around, search the forums, guide and links that Petra provided to learn about something you may have found on the ground, something someone gave you, skills you don't understand, etc. This game has been here a LONG time. And I would venture to say that there isn't a single player who knows everything about the game. We all figure it out as we go.

So welcome!

Welcome to UO!

I am an idocer, and it's an easy way to get fabulously rich, but I refuse to tell you how it works because of Rhiannon's awesome post above.

As she says, enjoy the journey.

I will add that the issue with 3rd party websites that sell UO items is yes, they use illicit means to collect the items on vendor's data, so using these player owned (caution!) websites supports cheating, bottom line.

It is however, not illegal to use them OUTSIDE the game. There is simply no way EA/Mythic/Broadsword could possibly police what UO players do outside the game.

What IS illegal is advertising websites that sell items for cash INSIDE the game.

So when you hear someone in general chat say "I saw that an ethy costs 7 million gp on XXX website", (Origin.com is the only Legal one we can mention), that someone in general chat is in effect breaking the rules by inadvertently, and not so inadvertently, advertising for them.

Dropping runes and books with websites that sell cash name and address is also advertising for them and likewise illegal.

Many times these illegal activities are done on throwaway trial accounts. (Except general chat adverts, free trial accounts can't use general chat, but they are known to spam the heck out of Help channel).

You can find this information in either the TOS, terms of service, or the ROC, Rules of Conduct. You had to agree to this when you set up your account.

You also agreed to page a GM if you think someone is cheating.

:)

(It's in the the fine print that nobody reads because they're in a hurry to play THE GAME.)

Have Fun!

PS: Thanks to the excellent posts from everyone on how to build characters that can actually earn their keep. I have been playing since late 2002 myself and really know nothing but how to idoc! Time to learn some skills.

Websites that promote UO like Stratics are legal so long as they do NOT sell items for RL cash or list exploits or hacks, as well they can not advertise sites that sell stuff for RL or promote cheating etc... I hope that clears that up. But Fansites that just give aide by providing community and information of the game regarding events etc are just fine.

Another thing about at least one of the sites: at least some of what they sell is duped. I know this only second-hand, but I'm hardly friends with the source and have no reason to doubt his claim. It's not just "Buyer beware," but "Buyer assumes."

This is true.

I'd also like to add that only Origin.com sells UO items that support the game.

Player run websites that sell UO items that are more often than not illegitimately obtained (duped/scripted/stolen) do not support the game, they support the players that own them, pays their car notes in real life. The easiest way to tell if an item on a player run website is illegitimately obtained is if it sells for cheaper than it's counterpart on Origin.com sells for. Logic says they won't stay in business long if they buy high and sell low.

Also if two different people claim they own the same UO account whoever paid that account the past 31 days is the owner in EA's eyes.
I certainly wouldn't want some total stranger who works UO and sells illegally obtained items for cash knowing the game time code that paid my account 31 days ago, along with my name address, phone number and email!

Enjoy the game, and, if you enjoy it as much as some of us do, support the game by making all your cash purchases for UO items from Origin.com. You will be protecting your account and personal information from some shady individuals at the same time.

Welcome aboard both UO and Stratics!

Ill let the experts of Pinco's instruct you on how ot navagate it.
Now on to money making.
Eary days we used our crafters/resource gatherers. Its still a good way for a player to make gold.
With a Miner/Smith.. you can build up to heater shields which pay well.
Scribe/Mage using inscription with a little work can in short order do very well in the gold building.
I will say there are as many ways to do it as there are players.
Resources are always wanted and bought.
Now on gear... This too I leave to our more knowlageable experts here...
Skill cap from a new point of view is called GM 100 points.
There are 4 stages of Scrolls that raise that bar... 105, 110,115, and a 120 legendary scroll of what ever skill you need.
Ask around what ever shard you are playing many have a stack of the lower numbers taking up space or a group who just did a spawn who will ether sell cheap or give you outright one. The bigger 2 might take a purchase but even the most coveted scrolls are not that far out of purchase with the exception of Magery.
There is something called a stat scroll and they can be found if you ask. They will give you 5,10,15,20 &25 max stat gain and there is a special one that adds an extra bit too. You only need read them and your stats limit will increase.
Necro can be done but not many know its a movement based gain system...
I am not looking at my necro book but I would recomend getting a boat and sailing the eastern server line on the east of Fire Island.
Sail north and cast away... this is also a good thing for gaining healing with a friend. Pinoc's has a macroer and you can set up a macro that will help you tremendously.
Dungeons...... well.... alot of changes have been done and these days it is depending on what you want to do. If you havent found one look into a guild that does runs in them...
Young and inexperienced are greatly helped by their guilds. (guilds are other players not a system)

Dont be afraid to ask more questions.. nothing is silly or seen as out of place. We are here to help.
Welcoem to our world.

a slave girl, you wouldn't happen to be the one who used to leave anti-books around, warning about buying from these sites? It's more than sound advice that if someone wants to buy gold, buy an item from the Origin store, then sell it in the game. It will be less gold than buying it from one of these sites, but at least it'll be an honest item sold while providing game revenues.

No no but I use to give the website book droppers and scripters and certain gold sellers heck on Pacific and I will always page on the website advertisers in general chat. To be honest I haven't heard much from them in gen chat lately.

Kudos to whoever is dropping books warning people against buying from player run sites.
