I am starting fresh on Atlantic, I just reactivated my account last night. I plan to mostly play solo but may eventually do some PvE group stuff.

I plan on making a Sampire but I would really love to play a Gargoyle main if I can find a build that can compete with the Sampires soloability. Can someone point me in the right direction for what kind of effective Gargoyle templates are out there. Please keep in mind I have 1000 starter gold and 0 resources. I don't plan on taking handouts, I would like to experience the game as a new player.

I have read some threads discussing "Whammy"s (I think that was the term) but they were all so detailed that my mind was boggled. I am looking for very generic newb friendly information to get me started on the right foot. I really don't care about the intricacies of "Best in Slot" gear or anything, but the basic stats I should be looking for would be nice to know.

Start with 50 Throwing, 50 Healing, 19 Bushido, 1 Chivalry.
Mark all skills down.
Mark Throwing, Tactics, Anatomy, Healing, Bushido, Chivalry, Resisting Spells, Focus up.

Make few escort quests while you are configuring the client (hotkeys, options, etc).
Buy 40 Tactics, Anatomy, Bushido, Chivalry, Resisting Spells.
Take New Player Quests for those skills and Focus.
Train Tactics, Anatomy, Bushido, Focus, Resisting to 50. Cancel quests (so you can take them later if needed).

Earn 15k gold buying bolts of cloth, making bandages and selling them to NPC healers/veterinaries.
In General Chat (or player's new player shop) buy 100% lrc suit (other mods doesn't matter).
Train Chivalry to 50 and cancel the quest.

Now you are ready for big battles.
Go to Ter Mur and do Agralem's quest to get Demon Slayer Cyclone. Collect Daemon Bones and Dragon Blood (you need 100 each to get a Knowledge Ball from Ortlem).
Start to do Percolem's quests (for slith). Between quests hunt void demons. Later you can do one 'boura, boura' quest for faster throwing ganes.
As your throwing goes up you can do other quests: for toxic slith (gold), for big bouras (pelts). But you need to buy a Soul Glave (di, ssi, hml) first - from an other player.

Battle tips:
Buy Mysticism spellbook and cast a healing stone (you have 30 race mysticism and some real focus) and use in when need to heal fast.
Honor your targets to get damage bonus.
Use CW, DF, EOO Chivalry spells.

When you collect 200k gold buy 120 throwing.
When you get 200+ pelts try to sell them. You can also may sell void orbs. (check stalls in magnicia - what you can sell)
When you get enough gold buy a suit with hpi, mi, si, lmc and all 70 res. May be with 100 lrc so you could train Chivalry to 120.
I see it this way:
4x armor pieses: 4 hpi, 7 mi, 7 si, 7 lmc, 17 lrc
neckplace: 7 mi, 7 si, 7 lmc, 17 lrc, res
earrings: 4 hpi, 7 mi, 7 si, 17 lrc, res
2x jewels: 13 hci, 22 di, 13 dci, 7 str, 7 dex
And a mana phasing orb with di+hci.
Try to buy 3x Soul Glaves (demon, reptile, elemental): ssi, di, hml, hsl, superslayer.

Now you are ready to do Abyss mini spawns.

p.s.
You can also train Resisting Spells to 50 in New Heaven.
When you reach skill cap mark focus down.
If you like to be thrower you need only 80 bushido.

120 throwing
100 tactics
80 bushido
100 anatomy
100 healing
120 chivalry
100 resisting spells

But you may as well switch to a paladin (macer) when you get enough gold for a good suit. It's more powerful and very difficult to kill in PvP 1vs1.

I run a wraith thrower and a vamp thrower on different shards. Both are effective, though each have their specialties. I run this template:

120 Throwing
120 Chivalry
100 Tactics
100 Anatomy
100 Healing
80 Bushido
60 SS (or 0 SS)
40 Necro (or 100 Necro)

Very similar templates. The vamp has more survivability but he kills things slower. The wraith can AI continuously but he is slow. Both are fun and worth a try. Go for 180+ stamina and 45 SSI.

Thanks Corwin! For the guide and the link, I was so busy looking through threads I didn't even look over the stickies. I noticed a lot of them were very old so I paid no mind.
