Sheesh I suck at this learning to train skills from the start!

Detect Hidden: I currently started a char with zero detect hidden, bought it up from the NPC to 29.5. UOGuide says use a tinker with 35 skill to make boxes so I created a new char with 50 carp and 35 tinkering to craft a few boxes (exceptional and non). And those boxes should take me to around 60 detect skill, then I can use gm made tinker boxes.

I tried using detect on them unlocked, locked, in my pack, on the ground and NO gains. So again, what am I doing wrong? :)

P.S. Yes I read about the factions/faction traps way, but I really prefer to not go this route.

Try detecting the crates outside of brit (just west of the SW bridge) on ground floor of the training tower. I usually was able to get great gains there...la

Hmmmm, I would imagine Fel...but it's been a long time. Have you been successful in revealing any traps?...la

You should get you a ball of knowledge (and - did you also make trap on the boxes?).

You need 75 tinker made boxes (trapped and locked) till you are 50-60, from 60 at highest you need gm tinker made boxes. If you are a elf, you get a bonus doing detect hidden.

You need only 1 box of each (i used 3), and make trap on it and lock it. I used lesser poison. If they are not trapped, you will not gain.

When I reached around 80 detect hidden with my char - i went to despise and got discoed an kept the gain fairly fast all the way to gm.

Did you remember to trap the boxes? Dumb question I know, but sometimes it's the simplest things.

I didnt, DOH! Then again, UOGuide says nothing about trapping them! I kept wondering how I just gained off plain boxes.

Don't forget that when you get a bit higher - I think around 65? you can gain detecting the boxes in Exodus dungeon. It may take longer than standing in a corner detecting one box, but it's a whole lot less boring and profitable too.

Now I got the problem where it says I cannot place a trap on that. This skill hates me!

yes, but you can only trap them one orientation - except I can never remember which way around it is, turn the box and you should be able to trap it.

Still not gaining which means I'm still doing something wrong. And people say taming is time consuming!

I might have it! Seems even to gain skill the boxes must face north/south.

Get a crystal ball of knowledge - even when GM they're a big help narrowing down the location of the Exodus boxes.

Do I need to relock the boxes (I'm using 10 boxes) each time I run through them?

You all are awesome here on Uhall and thanks again for the tips and advice. My Detect is raising nicely. I would never have figured it out on my own. :)

Oh stop the training, I couldn't do it so I bought the skill via SOT's, huge time and frustration saver, cheaper that most also.

ive never had a problem detecting hidden.
i make one box every 20 points when im making a new tinker.
so 40, 60, 80 and GM.
at those levels i make 2 boxes, one for lockpicking and one that i trap at that level.
i label them so they dont get mixed up then away i go.
with the anti macro code removed from game you dont need any more then 1 box at each level.

and you dont need paragon boxes, nor does it matter what way the box is orientated.
ive worked this skill to GM more times then i will ever admit too. but twice per shard..... every shard would be a starting point.

also you may find that your 60 skill may be a little low to do the GM box.
usually 30 points above is the max effective range for gaining.
course you could do it with GGS to get within range then gain normal once within range.

The quickest way to get to GM once your detect hidden skill gets into the 80s or so is to put your character in a faction, use a faction tinker to make trap deeds for your faction, and then place all 15 traps in one general area. Then just have your faction character which is working detect hidden keep detecting in that area, over and over again. Your detect hidden skill will rise very quickly. (I was told that years ago people used to raise detect hidden skill very quickly in an underground room in Britain that was filled with trapped chests. Maybe someone remembers the details on that and can tell whether or not that is still possible to do today. I'm thinking that today if you want to detect multiple traps at once you can't really do it with containers and must do it with floor traps.)

I've never tried this, but I wonder if you could also get some decent Detect Hidden gains revealing multiple goblin traps at once in the Underworld? You can find them in three locations as indicated on this page that talks about floor traps: http://uo2.stratics.com/miscellaneous/floor-traps . Might be worth a try just to break up the monotony of training.

I've never trained this skill and this will sound silly after all this expert advice you've been given here, but whenever I can't gain in a skill I feed my character. I find if they are extremely hungry, that once fed, they begin to gain again. It's worth a shot.

You should seriously reconsider drawing attention to yourself when you'll just be caught again spreading urban legends.

As I pointed out before: Devs have said since years ago that eating doesn't help with skill casting, nor does it help with skill gain. This isn't EQ where a character can eventually die from not eating. So kindly stop spreading misinformation. Your cooperation will be appreciated.

You can believe in your mythology if you so choose. The rest of us train characters without ever bothering to eat, with the same gains.
