Recently my son had NCIX make two computers .. ours were old and obsolete.

I am having a terrible time getting the classic client to work on Ultima Online not to mention the other problems with EA Bioware Mythic ending subscriptions to my UO Accounts because they say my CC is declined by them.

Ok the problems I am having are this:

1. A very shakey mouse arrow which shutters and sticks in a delay when trying to target anything like while locking down items and releasing them. I don't dare try target to kill a monster. The icon doesn't show up until I move the mouse arrow off the object/subject being targeted. Then the target icon sticks on the end of the mouse until you move it again to get rid of it.

2. I click on the minter at the bank in Luna and the menu won't come up so I can't open the bank box. It works in Haven City. I can say bank, or click on a minter to get his/her menu of options, or to get the bank box to open

3. I decided to work on taming skill .. tamed 5 bears then found out I can not get their menus up to pick an option like "Release" or "transfer" etc.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Classic Client is around still to give people with crappy systems something to play. CC is still around with a vast majority of paying accounts being scripters needing the CC for their easy button. CC is still around for the other majority 30% that think 8 tracks and parachute pants are still cool. Other 1/3 are nostalgic and will keep the planet covered with roads after the invention of teleportation.

Got upgraded systems now so download EC and see how that goes.

Thanks. t looks like I will have to try EC. I am in love with the way bears scratch behind their ears in the classic version. *sigh*

Jade, here's a genuinely helpful suggestion, as opposed to the meritless CC-bashing some of us have come to expect. I've always set my mouse to run in a separate thread.

Observe how this poster decided to offer help rather than a serving of passive agressive ********. I hope you are taking notes Warpig.

CC remains the most popular, most well loved client among majority who still play UO. Those who find reasons to be fustrated about this would do well to consider shortcomings of EC, not CC when explaining why this is.

This is true, and you should also note it's a little buggy. I have a friend who has to reset this option often. So if you are having trouble, bring up options and make sure the box is checked even if you've checked it before.

Thank you The Zog Historian. I keep trying different things in my macros and that is one of them. I did set the mouse to run in a separate thread which helped a great deal. Also while running through the moongates, at one of the gates I actually did get the option menus on a few of my bears who came through the gates with me. I thought perhaps a GM had come to help. But only three of the five bears were released. I just checked now, to see what the mouse was set at and found myself still running around with two bears that won't let me bring up their option menus.

Thanks Flutter. I am starting to find this out on quite a few macros. I have to keep resetting them. I am sure there is something to the way Windows 8 is interfering with the way this game works on my computer. My son suggest we might be able to get a program that will allow the older Classic to work on Windows 8. I love the old classic version of this game.

THIS is hilarious. Funny how our minds work: I go to the Haven Bank, because by standing outside, I can bring up the name of the bankers(minters) and I click on the minter's name and bring up his option menu so I can open the bank or sell and buy from him.

Ok with that explained .. I can't get the option menu to come up on the two tamed bears so I stick them both in the bank next to the minter and tell them to stay. Then I go outside and bring up all names and click on the bear names and get their option menu and pick "Release" and VOILA .. they are now released in the Atlantic Haven Bank. LOL  You have to love UO! I doesn't matter what you have to do to make things work, you or someone else finds a way to get around the problems!

This sounds strange. You should restart the UO.exe and check where you can verify all files on the computer.

Be also sure you have microsoft direct x installed.

Thanks to The Zog Historian and Flutter, and Flagg, for suggesting that I keep checking the interface macros. That makes sense. I had to install the game and something was set wrong.
I found out what is wrong!!!! :danceb: YAYE!

In the Interface Menu, below "run mouse in a separate thread", third box up from the bottom was checked which is:
"Hold shift for context menu"
I've never used SHIFT before to bring up a so-called context menu. Didn't even know what they meant by "context menu" I call that an option menu. hmmm...

Unchecking that box makes it possible to simply click once on anything to bring up the so-named "Context Menu"

Does anyone actually hold down Shift + Click on a target to get the context menu?
I reset it to work and tried it and it works. But why do both shift and click when you only have to do one click? (shakes head) ...

Thanks Mandrake of DF. That is the next thing I'll start learning to do. Like Flutter, I am a player who uses programs but I am not a programmer. Always learning though.

something else that might help.
Right click the program icon on your desktop, select 'properties' then under the 'compatibility' tab tick the box to run in compatibility for windows XP

I wrote a bunch of piffy stuff about CC, EC and POV UO but this site as it always is is screwed up and dropping stuff vs erroring out. And I've had my fill of the constant clicking noise.

I've used that option (i.e., hold down the Shift key while bringing up the context menu) for years, Jade. I was told years ago by one of the red characters in the faction guild I joined that a GM had told him that using that option made it more difficult for someone running some sort of cheating or hacking program to uninsure an item your character was wearing and thus cause it to drop to your character's corpse upon death.

That is very correct, Tina, and still very valid advice. Most all of those "quirks" are gone but it is far better to be safe, than to later wish you were.

So using the "shift + Click on target does have a reason! Thank you Tina Small and Widow Maker for that information. Wow - so many things to learn in this game with all the new fixes.

By setting the mouse on a separate thread in the interface options, plus removing the check mark from the box "Hold shift for context menu" has FIXED most of my problems already! I am NOT having problems with the shuttering arrow on my mouse and there is no delay with the target icon coming up as it should now. So I am able to play the game without any of the problems I was having.

Thank you everyone for the help, advice and information!

(still can't help but wonder why the interface options can't supply better information such as: "Hold Shift + click target for Context Menu")

Thank you Petra Fyde! I have just used your advice. I was hoping for that kind of information and you supplied it! My problems had a lot to do with compatibility of Windows, but didn't know exactly where to look to fix the problem. You wrote:

I didn't know to right click the UO PROGRAM and was clicking the desktop instead. LOL (computer geeks know better than me what to click on) but I figured it out finally!
Your Something else that might help is the HUGE HELP! Everything is NOW working properly!
After months of struggling without a computer, and payment problems, I can once again play UO! WHEW!!

Ironically I seem JINXED by the initials CC as in CC (credit card) and CC (Classic Client)

And Warpig Inc. - I am still laughing at your descriptions of us crepidly old players stuck on playing CC. I fall into the category of "Other 1/3 are nostalgic and will keep the planet covered with roads after the invention of teleportation."
QUESTION for you: Bears scratching behind their ears always makes me laugh in CC. Are bears doing that in the EC ?

As you come upon a bear or as they spawn they appear to just be getting up from the ground. Not sure on memory. Dogs sitting and scratching their head was a good one. Only running animation for bears on EC is tossing their head while roaring like "Old Ben" Rushing up on the heavy spawn by the zoo is neat. Been so long that I used CC forgetting what was animated. Been playing EC so long now I take for granted what animation is ammusing.
