That's how my name came out just now in Help chat in game.
I only have one character with that name, and have had since October 2000.
So how do I come to be number 2 today?

It's because there is a another char online in-game that has your name, so the chat system applies a number 2,3,4 etc....

Petra Fyde always was the one and only. I doubt this is a new player with no clue he use her name.. This doesnt bode well..

This has happened once before. On that occasion the duplicate was a scripting miner, deliberately made to discredit me and lead to some very hurtful accusations of hypocrisy and cheating levelled against me.
I don't claim that the same is true now, I've no way to know, but if you are approached by a character with this name, some caution might not go amiss.

Don't like the sound of that at all. I know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but in UO same name chars are very often bad news.

Maybe someone did it for the EM's 'to be young again' event and there's nothing to worry about.

Sorry but no such char at that event, and most people there were RAA RAAM and would not do such thing

I'm still '2' today, so since the thing resets at server up, someone is logging a char in with that name.
Of course I'm not the only person in the world who can dream up silly puns, but it would do no harm to be cautious if you should encounter the one who doesn't have 'Guardian of Yewdale Fellowship' above her head.

Maybe it would be prudent to use one of the age related titles for a while and let people know the one you are using. Any new player is unlikely to have access to them. Just a thought.
