Regardless of how much you like/dislike CC/EC I'm sure everybody can agree that Mythic has ended up in a grim situation. Rather small MMO with smaller still Dev team stuck with maintaining TWO seperate clients. It is very unfortunate.
It is somewhat incredible various dev teams under EA have tried to replace CC three times. It is somewhat incredible three seperate dev teams have failed to do so three times.
I personally voted for CC.
It looks and feels better. It looks and feels as UO should. Beautiful, timeles graphics. Most character models in EC are terrible. So terrible I get very strong " this isn't my UO
" vibe every time I see it in action. Player character, many NPCs allike look cheap. They look like they were lifted from some 12 year old Shareware game. Classic Client on the other hand looks classy and timeless in same fashion early 90's nintendo games, 20th centry Disney cartoons do. CC looks like a game that was extremely beautiful in 90's. EC looks like shareware that was born ugly in 00s. Former always feels better.
I have tried to force myself into liking EC some 3-4 times over the years. Can't be done.
According to Captain Hindsight, EA should have created 1:1 copy of CC from scratch around early/mid 00s. After having done so in some modern, intact well documented code language somebody not anointed to knighthood by Lord British can understand, it would hacve been time to start bringing improvements and updates to graphics, UI alike.
UI of CC gets plenty of well deserved flak.
Even this aspect comes with hillarious twist of it's own though. If you take
A) well arranged CC UI
B)Fully modded EC with Pino's UI and
C) Highly polished, highly modded UI of a modern AAA MMO you'll see
A and
C having bit more in common than B and C. Static, bulky action bars vs freedom to have each ability button where ever you please without having to chain them in horizontal or vertical rows. This is mostly just a small amusing detail. Still. it is plain INCREDIBLE more or less first functional MMO out there stumbled upon an approach to ability buttons that gets overlooked by most all modern developers: typical new MMO spawns with typical lifted-from-vanilla-wow action bars not unlike those EC is sporting. Over time, modders of this modern AAA MMO then tune and tweak the UI into something less flawed. In WoW, for example, evolution of player made UI addond has undeniably taken UI of a hardcore raider CLOSER to CC than EC. This is purely surface glitter. But undeniably it is curious and impessive.
Due to it's name alone, the very few people who have never tried UO before will download EC, not CC. It makes a huge mistake. Even the vocal minority that prefers EC will freely admit it takes like few hours to set up and few weeks of " getting used to"
CC on the other hand, despite having it's undeniable flaws and complexity of it's own, does not throw noob in deep end of the pool in same way. Figuring UI and mechanics out as you go along is much more natural in CC. It doesn't show stuff noob has no clue of down his throat. It would serve the game well if they renamed EC into " Advanced Client". It is closer to truth and gives noob a nudge to right direction.
