Anyone point me in right direction on creating my first character?

I have played years ago but for all intensive purposes I am a noob and want to start out all over again. Can anyone direct me on making my first character a template of some sort and where to put my start stats and attributes?

if you are interested in mainly PVM (fighting monsters) a Sampire template is the most efficient for it, Sampire stands for Samurai/Vampire, personally I don't know much about them so can't give you the specefics. But once you are skilled at using one you can kill almost anything in the game solo.

IMO the most well rounded template for getting started in UO is a mystic Mage. However, this usually relies on someone helping you out with a lower reagent cost suit and a couple full spellbooks.

That said, UO is truly what you want it to be. Are you one who favors magic or melee? Are you a crafter or a gatherer? Do you like fast paced unpredictable (pvp) or do you prefer sitting on a dock with a rod and reel? Tell us what you want to do (or think you want to do) and you will have no shortage of folks opinions ;)

The same can be said for what shard you select. Connection speed is a factor as well as the population density you are looking for. Atlantic is the highest population shard, but that does not make it the right fit for everyone.

always do the "advanced character" option. start 2 skills out at 50. (usually the ones that are hard to raise, but youll figure that out when youve trained more skills)
then for the other 2 are just to get books. like a chiv book.

i always start strength at 60 just so i have the most armor options. the other stats will go up fast.

Also, take advantage of the quests in New Haven. You can buy skills up to 40 and then train most of them with an accelerated gain up to 50.

if your going with a basic fighter (i like these as start characters) id start out with 50 healing 50 tactics. buy up your weapon skill (macing is cheapest in the longrun, swords is best but powerscrolls are costly) anatomy, and chiv to 40. possibly bushido to 40 too.

sampire is good, especially for spawns / multiple targets, but requires training up necro to 99. cant really train that skill effectively while actually playing the game. and the suit is a little harder for a starter suit. sampire is a good switch over from bushido dexter with healing. it works well with 100 majic resist for pvm in place of anatomy. i switch out healing / necro and anatomy / majic resist a decent amount. this requires soul stone fragments tho (or full stones) which can be costly.

I normally don't recommend this because people need to learn the basics, but you did say you played years ago. They do sell advanced character tokens. The Mythic token is even better if they currently sell them. This option is only good if you are in a hurry and don't mind throwing some hard cold cash at the character.

to echo what a few people said, if you have absolutely no help, have your first character be a warrior using the "advanced" option on template, with as Smoot said, 50 tact and 50 heal, but I would actually suggest 49 tactics and 49 healing. i'd get the rest of your points in the weapon skill of your choice, and at least 1 point in healing so you get some bandages. those are the hardest skills to raise as a warrior outside of magic resist, and you won't be fighting things that would require magic resist until you get to at least 61 heal/anatomy.

go to new haven (through Moongate system) and get quests for tactics, your weapon skill, healing, anatomy, and magic resist. lock focus in your skills menu, go east to old haven undead town, and train away. every time you hit a 50 you'll get a free item from quest rewards. if you need more bandages then find an escort npc and escort them for some bandages-buying money. once you've done all the quests to 50, your weapon skill should be around 60. then you can go to ilshenar through the moongate near new haven to sacrifice, and just up to the NW are some brigands you can kill for cash. not the most lucrative venture, but it can get you a start. best right now might be farming headless in covetous dungeon then selling them in new magincia, but that takes some adventuring.

Thank you all for your replies. I am going to go mage/mysticism for now and just do PVM with the colosis or however ya spell it lol. I hope its ok for pvm and then eventually I will make more characters and at least one for pvp :)

That is a good choice. mage has always been fun to play to and it is the swiss army knife of UO.

i would suggest the Gargoyle because you can fly with colossus up and you don't need an ethereal horse.
You will need someone to make you a basic suit and the spell books.
Suggest Spellweaving when you are done with mage/mysic. It is a quest you can find it on UOguide.com

If you need a hand with items just ask. Don't know what shard you are on but I can get to all transferable shards it will take time though.

what shard? :) be sure to check out Luna from moongate, and use the chat for help (it's kind of hard at first to get mystic scrolls, but depending on the shard, you can just by them)

My suggestion to you would be to start out with a Crafter, something like arms lore, mining, Smithing, Tailoring, Tinkering, Carpentry, and Lumberjacking. that way you can support a Fighter with basic armor and supplies. then work on whatever fighter you want, and start an Imbuer, Alchemy, Poisoning, Scribe type to make better armor, Pots and other supplies. (and to unravel all the junk you get from monster training). because unless you are starting out on Atlantic, or Europa, or another of the Heavily populated shards, you will need to be self sufficient.
