Well, first off let me just say that I've experienced a very warm and friendly welcoming to UO. A little about my info. I've been playing for about 1 year off and on, I'm on Catskills ( I get deployed a lot these days) I have 4 characters Mage/Bard, Crafter, sampire, archer. I thought maybe this can shed some light on the issues of attracting new players to UO, because I've been trying to recruit some of my friends to make a trail account and get involved. No luck. From my end though the online community here has really offered me a great experience. All I have to do is ask for directions or how was this made and god bless them they put up with my ignorance.

what's going on in a newbies head are:

Constant keeping up with updates and what's new is sorta confusing I have to catch up on these forums. I got back and had to read up on these new invasions. My sampire actually killed some captains all by himself. Got dropped like a bad habit by a Bard though. I had to search at first for UO help. Which coming from my end I didn't know sites like this existed. Or uo guide or stratics. A download-able PDF or something for common newbie concerns like a detailed info of imbuing to reforming would be nice. It's easy to say go here and type a search for it. Once again if information is there (which I know is now) it's not reaching my little newbie hands..

Holy inflation! I see some pretty items I would like to have but lord 80million! To a billion! Even? I know ways of getting gold now, but not at that level. It's safe to say people making such deals have been playing since what 98? ( which I actually joined first in UO, but forgot all account name and cancelled the account after 3 months, I think my greatest item was a bow of power back then)... So is starting on a gold hungry power trip all begins with obtaining that rare Shame piece? Honestly, how can a player that might want something like the insane leggings
afford them?

That's it for my little bit of feed back. For the most part I can see myself playing UO for a while. I like the way people go out of their way to lend a hand. I actually emailed some of the crafters about suits and what not and they more than pointed me in the right direction. I like the idea of the Vendor Search because it give newbies like myself with a house waaaay in the middle of nowhere a chance to sell some items and make that money. I like to also thank the people that post tutorials and charts. I've read and they actually help out a lot. So keep doing em.

Once again these are just my what I found are frustrating . Information being a little easier to obtain and decipher, and does it really need to take someone doing analytical mathematics to figure out some of these equations on combat?

As for affording some things.... Yes they are expensive... But I don't own a pair... played for years. If I want a pair I do what most industrious folk do and I attempt to farm it on my own. As for selling stuff keep farming those items..... the drops mini's as well as the rewards are worth quite a bit right now..... some folk aren't really that into farming stuff... they will pay folk who are.

Good luck

Sounds about right. I think they do a great job here on stratics and UOguide etc to compile info, but this game has a lot of overly complex and non intuitive systems and loooots of "hidden" effects and systems (like bushido boosting whirlwind special as an example) that have absolutely no in game documentation, and if someone doesn't actively tell you about it you would probably never know.

The thing about inflation is that we just need a currency exchange. It's really not all that hard to make millions and millions even as a new player but the effect of seeing something priced in the tens of millions has to be daunting for someone who is unaware of how to make big money. I can see people just looking at vendors in the first week and saying "I have no chance of getting any cool items, old players are too established". Not to mention the simple logistics of moving around hundreds of million gold checks.
