[Necromancy] Necro/Mage PvM Strategies

Hello, I've newly returned to the game, and I'm skilling up a necro/mage, but I have some confusion about the play style of the template. A lot of the necro spells seem to lend themselves to closing with the monster, (e.g. "Curse Weapon," "Wither," etc.), but the character can't last long in close combat. I'm wondering how others play this type of character in PvM.

My experience has been that I can last a bit if I'm one-on-one with a monster if I use "Curse Weapon," but monsters tend to gang up. What experiences have others had.

I have Spellweaving on my necro mage, template is

120 Magery
120 Evaluating intelligence
120 Meditation
120 Necro
120 Spellweaving
120 Spirit speak

I use slayer books when I can (slayers don't work for all spells and not everything has a slayer vulnerability) or a book with 30 spell damage increase - if you haven't got one of these and can't afford one, Scrapper's compendiums are cheap with 25 SDI.

I try cast spells that target the monsters weakest resist.

Wraith form if its going to be a long fight and mana might be a problem, if the target has plenty of mana to leech, if not I use lich form. If its a quick fight where mana shouldn't be a problem I stay mounted. I use shadow wisps to help with mana too.

I try keep my distance especially when fighting something that moves fast / hits hard, using spells like fireball and energy bolt. I usually only get in close when I'm fighting something slow or I'm with a group.
Fighting lower levels of champ spawns I cast area spells - wither, earthquake, essence of wind to kill as many targets as possible.

Use summons for extra damage or to keep a monster busy so it doesn't target you.
Gift of renewal to help healing.
Word of death when I can for big hits and to speed up a kill.

Lots of cures, heals and invises ;)

Do you cast "Protection"? I really don't like that I can't use FC with protection, and it gives a hit to SR as well, but I often find I can't get a spell off without it, especially if the monster is a caster.

One of my favorite monsters I used to fight as a necro Mage ( i actually dropped necro for spellweaving) was artic ogre lords. I used corpse skin, then cast explosion then flame strike and said goodnight to the fiend. I can do the same with my Mage now without corpse skin and drop them with 2 spells, but that is because I have an ogre slaying spell book :)

That sounds fun. I'll try that!
