Automatic Releasing and Locking Down

If in your own house every item you slap down should be locked down. Everytime I go to grab an item off the floor it should be like I've released it.

Probably? easy to code. The game already recognizes when you're in your house and it would just be like duplicating the effects of saying it. If you want to pass something to someone just release it like you normally would. It's probably more rare to happen that way.

It's a nice thought, but blessed items can't be thrown into the trash, so I leave them on the floor to decay. And sometimes when away from the garbage can, I discard things by putting them on the floor.

I did! LOL I had a box of all my home deco and arties I was using to lockpick train and I forgot to re-secure it after I got my GGS.

That's not it though... the main reason is I leave bags for dis-imbuing and I leave stuff at the house all the time... plus watching an auction I thought... "What if he didnt have to lock everything down and release it?"

Blessed items go in the trash fine if you put them inside a container.

What if someone drops a bunch of stuff on the floor and the owner walks in and it all gets locked. I would do that to Dreamy so fast. hehehehe

I would like to be able to drop an item and click it to get a menu that allows lockdown.

I guess you will using chests with useless items inside from now on.

As long as there is a text command & players can save that text command to a macro hot key I'm fairly certain house lockdown will never get an update. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea proposed with the thread & all, but supposing the dev team goes through with this concept to auto lockdown items when dropping them, & somehow the game glitches out, suddenly causing peoples items to disappear at random (YIKES, it already happens once in awhile). Just be glad we can make saved text macros such as, "I wish to lock this down", or, "I wish to secure this. Make it a habit to check your available storage menu on the house sign daily, & always always double check for the message to appear saying whether or not you have available storage in the lower left corner of your screen. Don't assume that storage is available because I've made that mistake myself with a container decaying over the years.

I smiled about it because he obviously didn't get the point or idea and I wasn't trying to be rude about it. The intention is that if you're in your own house it works this way. Obviously another person on a different account shouldn't be able to lock things down in your house. And a simple "you've reached max lockdowns" message fixes the other problem and doesn't have to interrupt the game.

Also, the blessed item decaying thing probably doesn't happen enough to warrant it being a complaint. And there is always just taking a step outside or putting it in a bag. Or simply releasing it.

This wasn't really a serious suggestion. Just something I thought of watching a Auction. Some of you get way too worked up and respond pretty rudely. Time to lighten up, please.

I have three accounts. I regularly exchange items between characters while logged in on two or all three of them by throwing a handful of items on the ground in my house and grabbing them with the character I want to have them. This would just be obnoxious to me, having to drop it then release it.

What a concept! Protect your most valuable items by securing them once and leaving them secure!

Okay, ignoring your unreasonable anger over a suggestion... You just belittled the biggest plus to playing UO. Being a homemaker in a game and decorating your house. Pretty sure that's one of the top things people tell others when they join this game or are interested.

Breath, understand that the world isn't ending, and talk like an adult. The chest wasn't important to me. It's a non-issue for this suggestion. The only reason why I brought it up was because someone asked. I'm hardly the only person who's lost items that way either so you're argument against my suggestion by saying it's something that hasn't happened to you really doesn't move me at all.

You need to re-read the original post, understand it's tone, and proofread your post to understand if your tone is excessive. Forums are for conversation right?

I understand it's not a "Necessary" thing. Some changes aren't for the betterment of the world. Some changes are just small tweaks to make things more enjoyable.

FYI, the biggest plus to UO is and always has been the community, not playing Susie Homemaker.
Locking yourself up in your house all day moving things back and forth is all fine and well but means that you are not interacting with anyone for long periods of time and sure isn't helping the community.

Yes you want an "EASY BUTTON" because you are to LAZY to do a few simple steps. Is this reason enough for you.
Make house private.
Check house for hidden players and remove any found.
Make Macros or use UOHomeowner.
Deco/move items.
Dbl check to make sure everything is OK.
Make house public so others can see what you have done.

OMG that is so hard to do and you want UO to make it so all you have to do is Deco/move items. Sounds like another "EASY BUTTON" to me.

Yes and no.

1) Throwaway ideas don't usually involve someone stating that something should be done and then saying they are "easy to code"
We all know that nothing in this old game is easy to code and that everything has consequences that can tend to be bad.

2) Selfish means that the idea is something that benefits yourself correct? For some reason the OP cannot take 30 seconds to set a lock down and release macro like the rest of us have. Or he simply is too lazy to set the macro? Or he set the macro and he still feels it is too hard to hit the macro? I don't know which ofc.
Whatever. To each his own and he now wants it to be mindlessly easy by making items just stick on the floor. Thats all fine and dandy but as aran pointed out in this very thread that is an obnoxious and selfish idea because it most certainly would not benefit all the other people that are used to dropping things on floor in their own house so other chars can pick them up after relogging.
So please tell me again why the OP isn't being selfish when his entire idea completely negates me doing something I have done for years? Because if his idea was implemented nobody else could ever again drop something on the floor and log any other account they want to pick up the item in their own home.

I read this thread over and over again and my opinion is:

(1) All calm down. We are discussing an idea. Nothing more, nothing less. There have been threads much more rude as well threads much more polite. Both sides haven´t worked hard to be extremely friendly, if you ask me. Not every idea, that leads to an "easy button" is product of lazyness, selfishness or something like that. On the other hand, not every idea that comes to a single mind is worth to be discussed here...

(2) The lockdown-macros we already have are fine, there is not much need to change anything.

(3) Susie Homemaker is cool. If you ask me, housing is one of the TOP-3 reasons for playing this game!

OP put forth a poorly thought out bad idea that would in fact negatively affect a lot of other players(as pointed out by aran and confirmed later by the OP himself)

After aran's post the OP posted 5 more times. Not one of those posts clarified or had anything to do with his initial bad idea.
Every one of the 5 posts was simply made to call other people rude and impolite.

OP's last post in fact is all semantics intended to debate whether or not being polite is also being charitable. Seriously? It is on topic how?

No less then 6 or 7 people in this thread(the entire majority)agreed that the idea was not solid yet the OP still keeps this thread going by debating general politeness with semantics.

It would also make decorating a HUGE pain if you set something down in the wrong spot initially. Sometimes it's hard to set something how you want it, especially if you're stacking items, and having automatic lockdown would make it sooooooo much more annoying. I would HATE automatic lockdown for this reason.

What I WOULDN'T mind seeing would be an option in your house sign to move all unlocked items either under the sign (or into a moving crate). You can do this already to a customizable house just by hitting the customize button and popping back out, but an option to do it on classic houses would be nice too just to be absolutely certain you didn't leave anything unlocked.

But... it really isn't necessary. Most people are probably already very, very careful when moving their valuables. As for those who aren't... well, it only takes once to learn!

My biggest beef was the addon containers (arcane bookshelves, etc) unsecuring themselves after putting house in customization mode, which was obviously not intended. They fixed that about two months after I learned the hard way about that one. *grumble*

The second line of my original post addresses your concern. It's not just automatic locking down, it's automatic releasing. Also, for passing things to other accounts... I feel that this happens less often than moving things around in your house or adding new pieces. I think it's more efficient that that aspect of the game need the macros for releasing than the other way around. If you want to pass to another account just release it after putting it down instead of the other way around where we have to lock it down.

So... it would make decorating the opposite of a huge pain. It would eliminate having to use the macros and target stuff.

I'm also aware that this isn't needed or as big of a concern. I just felt that it may be easy and a perk. Not everything has to be game fixing. I'm also aware that some people will complain about everything and will tear everything people say apart and devolve conversations into arguments over semantics. I've chosen to put people on my ignore list. If I don't respond, it's not acceptance of what they're saying. It's pity that I have told them how they make me feel and how I feel they are representing themselves and posters here on Stratics, but they aren't willing to admit it or respond intelligently about why the things I say are untrue without continuing to be rude.

I shouldn't have responded to them as much as I had and gave them more things to pick apart. I should have just left it at the fact that they're being rude and put them on ignore. Lesson learned.

You can't say it's even "probably" easy to code, you just don't know. My thoughts would be that there would have to a huge amount of code to be written seeing as picking up and dropping items are events that are typical throughout the entire game. Yes the specific events you are speaking of only occur in a house but we have no idea if they can be tied together or if new events would have to be written.

IN SHORT: There are MANY other things that should be fixed or added to even think about something like this.

And the coding is already there to recognize when it's your account's house. So is the coding to lock and release stuff. The only thing I'm proposing is removing the necessity to say it.

Six Sigma Black Belt. It's probably easier than you think. The game already does all of the actions. It's just changing when and what triggers it. And as far as going through lengths of code to find all the places to put it. That's very true. Especially in stuff this old. Newer stuff uses modules where you can make a change in one place and it fixes it in all of them. Then you test and iron it out. It's not as hard as you're making it sound. I may not be a "programmer" but I know how to recognize what's easy, more efficient, and what saves money.

This is just a discussion. It's not intended to go straight to the Devs. Put it here to discuss. It's not going on any list of stuff that won't be worked on...
