I would like to open up this discussion on Player run events.

What Events did you participate in and like?

What made it fun?

Who do you give Mass Props for putting the time and effort in putting them on?

Lastly what are the myths you can dispel about putting on a player event? It costs to much, it takes to much time, no one shows, etc.

Oh THIS one is easy...MY favorite player run event is Deal Or No Deal UO Style, done on Sonoma on SAT. afternoons. It's my fave because I'M the so-called "sneaky banker" who gets to laugh at and humiliate all the noobs who THINK they are going to beat me...very fulfilling in a vicarious sort of way:]

Tell us about this tradition and history friend. This event is part of the lore and History of Napa. Many a Bard has made their Name from telling their stories at this event.

Well now let's see... it's rather similar to the TV Deal Or No Deal. We pick 5 semi-finalists to be contestants. They are chosen from the audience, all of whom fill out books with name/shard info. The 5 semi's then enter the studio and select one of 5 boxes to stand in front of. At a given signal they open their boxes, and the one whose box has a book that says "finalist" becomes that game's main contestant. The other 4 then become semi-finalists which we call "the peanut gallery". The main contestant then picks one box from a field of 26, all of which contain a numbered book. This box [and the book within it] then becomes their HOME box. The book's denominations are in uo gold, and if the contestant picked the top prize at the beginning as his/her home box, they will win big time. But they won't know that until the end of the game. They then begin picking random boxes to be opened each round. Depending upon which values are exposed, the banker will at the end of each round offer to "BUY" the book that is in the contestant's box. If they accept the offer, the game is over and the contestant wins the amount that was proffered. If they refuse, then the next round commences [and so on] until the last boxes are exposed. At this point we learn which amount the contestant originally picked as their "home box" and they win that amount. Along the way door prizes are distributed via random picking from the other books that the audience submitted but weren't chosen. So there's a fair chance for everyone to win something. The game occurs on Sonoma but cross-sharders are encouraged and welcome, and winners are paid out on the shard of their choice, including Siege. Well it's after midnight now, so that means TODAY at 4 PM PAC time we'll be there for another adventure of DEAL OR NO DEAL UO Style. It's held at SONOPOLIS, which is the old orc fort west of Umbra. Oh ya, one more thing: the game is simulcast on UORADIO.COM, so that everyone can not only watch but listen in on the fun. Hope to see you there, "The Sneaky Banker" Norman Bates:]

Another vote for live auctions here.

Europa Auction (Europa)
Nails Warstein's Silent Auction House (Atlantic)
Nabin's "Sage's Rares Auction Series" (Atlantic and I think Pacific)
Captn Norrington's Acropolis Live Auction Hall (Atlantic)

All fantastic player run events / auctions. Keep up the good work.

Community hunts on LS. Works being a gathering for the displaced players without a crew and regular hours. Quirky templates that can gather being group designed and not some godlike soloist template in a suit that caused hair loss.

Auctions before they required a clean bankbox with must have vendors to pull funds from a few times per auction.

Would have to say, Fluffy Bunny a.k.a Mentiras always had the best player run events on Legends. He worked diligently for hours creating the "Fluffy Bunny Event Guide" which details each event he's created over the years that he played UO. Its a shame that when Mesanna was looking for EMs to hire she never responded to his dozen or more emails because he eventually retired from UO about 2 months ago. But he relentlessly encouraged the community of Legends to get involved and always encouraged felucca based games- my personal favorite PAINTBALL. Here's a list of some of the games he has created with many more which can be found on Legends forums. Miss ya fluff.

And here an added video of paintball:

I second that for Fluffy! He has done a lot to entertain Legends and definitely encouraged others to try. He was the Legends EM anyway, as in Event Master!

My favorite player run events have been the roleplaying adventure events where the person organizing the event basically plays dungeon master. UO is such a great game for this type of event with all the different props we have at our disposal, the wide range of detailed locales we can use, and the various tools at our disposal (ie polymorph and costumes). Hats off to Capricorn of Sage, Luna Rossa the Sage guildmistress of old, and Joy of Elf for the RP Adventures they have run.

All Player events that bring people together are good. :)

It depends on the events how many players come but always there are enough to come. They do come often at the last minutes. We announce events about 5 days before they start on the forums. And at the day of the event i announce the event several times 30 minutes before the event in ally and general chat.

Some events don't require preperation like the void pool challenge (Where we try to break the shard record) or Despise or fighting against Slasher.
Some take a bit more time like getting ships ready for pirating or hunting pirates.

Hunts on Medusa and Stygian Dragon been much easier to gather 40 keys and orbs cause we have a week time to gather them.

The knuckleheads have set up a nice webpage for their monthly auction event but it takes time to gather all the items and prepare them for the auction day.

Most time it takes for our 2 weekly exodus event. We encourage players to gather as many keys themself during the week but my guild try to gather 100+ keys for the event day.Exodus event is a big success but it also requires a lot of work.

We have fishing competition that takes as much time you want to put in.

We have a roleplaying event that we working together with the EM. The EM is realy great to help us out on it. What a lot don't know is that many works is done in "secret" to discuss our ideas and prepare all things. All the EM events and also the RP Event with the EM is done in 2 languages in Drachenfels. So all text have to be writen and Macros needs to be made in 2 languages. The hardest part is not the preperation but the players who expect items on EM event.
It somethign we discussed with the EM at the start of our Zalindera Saga, there will be no items to get. We rather do this event for 10 players who are interested in the story then 50 who comes for items. This sunday after theKings meeting we have the next chapter on the event. So if you coem for items, don't bother! :)

There more events i forget to mention but they all good. We have a good community and alliance on Drachenfels that work well together to make al lthe events possible and fun. :)

Community hunts, like Warpig said. It's fun playing in a group sometimes when you're primarily a solo player, and it allows me to do things I normally wouldn't be able to - Doom Gauntlet and Ilshenar Champs, to name a few.

Other than that, hmm. Auctions were fun, but I enjoyed Friday night Fight Nights on Lake Superior, which took place in Rivendell (Lake Superior's player run town, though I believe it hasn't been used in quite some time.) They were always a good gathering spot for the shard's PvP community back in the day - duels, last man standing free-for-alls at the end of the night, etc. I even went red during one FFA, casting earthquake after going gray and getting a bunch of murder counts.

My favorite player-run event is one I do every two years as part of my player-run cities anniversary events. It is based on an event done many years ago by another historic guild on Baja. It is a fund raiser for the Britannia Royal Zoo on Verity Isle (Moonglow), Trammel and raised over 300 Million in gold. The event is alot of fun.

Golden Brew’s Great Date Celebrity Auction at the Skara Brae Trammel Faire Grounds. Based on an event that occurred on Friday, March 16, 2001 at the Golden Globe Theater in the City of Golden (http://www.freebornpress.com/archives/2001/03/reminder_golden.php) and back by popular demand from two years ago (Thursday, February 11, 2010). Come and bid on a famous (or is that infamous) player of Baja who has volunteered to be auctioned and to provide a service such as PvP or Peerless Keying Lessons to Decorating Services. NOTE: No player can be forced to do something that they do not want to. All proceeds of the auction will go to the Britannia Royal Zoo on Verity Isle (Moonglow), Trammel. The Celebrity Auction two years ago raised over 110 million gold for the Zoo.

-Personally I'm a big fan of Saturday / Sunday Morning spawn checking. I'll log on my RED and thus begins the "PLAYER RUN... Event".

-Obviously the fun part is Catching them!

..................... to stop joking I've honestly never attended ANY in 15 Years. I've Crashed a few but most of the time they are prime time when I'm at work & the remaining ones just don't interest me. Very Rarely does my list of 1)Stuff I want to do & 2) Stuff I need to do match up with such events heh.

Hoping to get the tradition going again real soon. :)

Thanks for the mention!

We did have some very different story-night rules which we never mentioned in public, which we hope added to the experience.
1. Nobody involved with RT could win, even on alts.
2. Audience participation gave bonus points to the storyteller (extra points if death was involved!).
3. While there was usually only one winner, every participant was paid for the effort, no matter the quality of the story (usually we paid good stories more than bad ones (and there were quite a few abysmal stories!)).
4. While we were not responsible for losses of items/fame/life, we went far above and beyond our duty to make sure the stories outside of the door were as fun as inside. (It's a secret about just how we did it, we'll just say that not all "unplanned" events were accidental)
Not a rule, but a definite selling point - McIntyre told the best stories. He definitely had a knack for entertainment.

We also had the repeat-winner rule, where one person couldn't dominate the prizes every week. Some people were such entertaining storytellers that nobody else would have ever have won if we played "fair", which we never did. (The people who the rule affected were in on it. The idea was to get more people to tell stories, not to give the best storyteller the prize. Those people would be back next time anyway, and were usually deeply involved with the tavern to the point where they barely didn't fall under "rule 1". Some of the out-of-game discussions were amusing. "You told the best story, do you mind if you don't win for a change?")

OH! Thanks for chiming in Farsight!

By any chance you entertain the notion of comin' back home to Napa?

I did continue parts of the "secret recipe" (no consecutive winning, but could tell a story if they wanted - everyone got something to take home with them - while still in Fel, the "bouncers" made sure those of the crimson persuasion behaved, or it got very interesting for all, certain RPvPer would contribute some drama from time to time as part of the event). As the population got thinned out, the story nights I hosted were moved over to Trammel to get more participation, and eventually it got to be only a sit & gab session of old timers.

Now, with an insurgence of new/returning players to Napa, although they be yet a bit silent, I'm hoping to reinstate the tradition! So... you come home and visit some time, ya hear?

This was our attempt at incorporating house drops into an event.
We needed a way to spawn monsters.
The scalis and the Harbingers are helpful but there needs to be more of these types of player spawn monsters in the game or at least released pets should return to their normal AI.

My favorite event is, when I once a month invite the whole shard on Siege to the graduation of new Siege players who made their first month on Siege in the guild Newborn on Siege, NEW2.
It's hold in my castle and have seen enemy guilds sit together telling the new Siege players about their guild and why they should jon it.
The castle is public and red, blue and thieves are welcome as long they take the fight outside on the road.
