New Haven Method
0-40 skill - Train at the New Haven Combat Academy. (picking up the training quest will greatly improve your gains)
40-55 skill - Attack Zombies, Skeletons, and Spectral Spellbinders in Old Haven.
55-70 skill - Attack Ettins found South of New Haven (near the mountains, quick spawn)
70-100 skill - Attack Earth Elementals found in the New Haven Dungeon (quick spawn)
This method works very well on all production shards (not available on SP ruleset shards). You can take your character very far without ever leaving Haven Island. After you reach 100 it is up to you if you want to continue in New Haven's dungeon by going after Ogre Lords, or if you finally want to get off this island and play the game!

I just saw this on UOGuide and I was wondering if this is a viable way to train from 0-GM in melee skills. It seems legit, but it's odd that we wouldn't have to leave the island. It's also awesome since I love fighting Ettins and E-Elles.

It works. I personally switch to the Yomatsu Mines around 80. Earth and dull copper els to 100 then onto Yomatsu warriors.

I took on three Ettins yesterday at once. I even found a really cool Scythe that has Repond Slayer on it. That made this MUCH easier. Skills are still under 60, but I only played for about 2 hours.

I'm certainly learning how to keep myself alive a bit better. Mix of Chivalry Healing and First Aid. I went ahead and just Macroed Anatomy last night while watching TV on Netflix, so I'm doing a good clip more damage now. I went out to price how much a Sampire suit would be and I now realize that I'm not getting one. Heh.

The best way to train melee skills or throwing or archery is: Highland Bouras. They don't walk fast and there are always ~ 3 of them north of Ter Mur. Best thing about them: They have a lot of hit points!

You won't be training with bouras at the very beginning mayhaps, I am not sure when you can start training with Bouras. Please use UOGuide.com to find out. If you have Discordance as a skill that you can put on with a soul stone you could start training with Bouras even earlier probably. I have not tried that yet.

  • Use a skill tutor or a crystal ball of knowledge.
  • Use skill jewelry as needed so you can go there as soon as possible, remove the jewelry as your skills rise.
  • Use no Damage Increase on your gear, not even on your weapon so each boura lasts as long as possible.
  • Have 120 music and 120 peacemaking on your character and have the boura peaced all the time.
  • Try to achieve maximum swing speed with minimum damage.
  • I am not sure if it affects skill gain - but you might want full Hit Chance Increase.
  • Optional: Put tactics and anatomy on a soul stone. At least if you have trained them out already.
  • Weapon: Use a fast weapon so you swing a lot. E.g. a dagger could be fine, I am not sure about those weapon changes in Publish 79, 80 or 81, though. I hope it did not strengthen the dagger. Those recent publishes make my head ache.
  • Highland Bouras got me to 120 several times.
I think it's not only a very fast way to train - it's also a very peaceful one.

You're right that a full Sampire suit is in the tenths of millions gold, but you can start with a "training" one and step up.
If you know an imbuer (or you have one), you can ask her if she can craft the following items (credits to Corwinxx):

Ring/Bracelet: +7 STR, +7DEX, +13 HCI, +13DCI, 22DI (each)
Other Armor pieces (not enhanced): A Random 15 resist to get to full, 7 LMC, 7 MI, 7 SI, 4 HPI (each of 6 pieces)
Weapon: it depends on the type, however you should have 20-25 SSI, HML, HSL, HLD

This suit is really cheap and efficient. Apart for the weapon, and the ingots/leather needed for the base items, my calculator gives about 900 assorted gems, 40 magical residue, 100 Enchanted Essence, (100k at most, i have them from normal loot every day) and the biggest part of the cost are 50 Relic Fragments, and the POF needed to strengthen your investment (no need to bring them to 255, you're going to change them). You should get away with about 1.3-1,5 Mil.

With the 42 stamina and 14 DEX provided from the suit you won't have difficult swinging at top speed (unless you choose a very slow weapon).
You will have nice defences, and almost 100% DI. The 42 mana will help spamming weapon specials and chivalry spells.

Try and point to this little step, before going to the full-fledged sampire suit.

A little hint i found useful, if you're human, do the spellweaving quest to use JOAT Gift of Renewal. Really nice to have!

How do you get arcane circle? It seems people too lazy to come when I invite for JOAT circle.
Arcane Circle is not needed if all you want are the bare minimums of the spell. If you want you can cast it alone at britain bank, but IMHO there is no need if you only have JOAT Spellweaving.

It doesn't work if you cast it alone at britain bank. You get level 3 if there is another player. There's a great difference with and without circle. Without circle GOR duration is too short to use it.

To be honest, i never cast it alone, i always found someone there, so i stand corrected :D

Well, 30 secs of GoR for no skill and a little mana, is not too shabby for a pure Melee. And... finding a single Joat player shouldn't be too difficult. We should spread the word in the shard community, let them all do the Spellweaving quest with all char, and give the free GoR and Nature Fury to all human chars! :D

But, i think we are drifting Off-Topic... and the OP hasn't answered yet. Let's wait for his answers :D

Spellweaving isn't part of the build I'm going for. I'm sure it has its benefits, but I already have it marked to learn for my Mage.

That suit is wonderful. I can totally almost make that with my Imbuer that I have right now. I may have to harvest some gear to break down for components in the next few weeks. I just hope I can get rid of my house on Atlantic quickly enough for me to get a house on Napa (new home shard) and get all the supplies I need. I'm sure that others can make the suit for me, but I really like trying to be independent where I can.

I probably won't do the idea with the Bouras... it sounds cool and all, but I'm a total n00b at this game right now. Earning 120 Music/Peace is a way out of my range... also I only have the one stone right now (I may need to buy another one next payday).

Also, I'm enjoying hunting things to kill them. Skillgaining is fun and all, but I'm more into the whole "Slaughter the evil and take from them their worldly posessions!" kinda' gimmick (also, as above, I'm poor and they drop money).

Also, I've been so caught up in selling my house on Atlantic (Fel New Magencia in guard zone, selling for 60m or trade for a Server Transfer Token) that I haven't really had time to get on my fighter and skilltrain. Still in the upper 50s right now. I am, however, doing a bit of RP on that character. Which makes me really enjoy the game again.

No need to invest points in it if you're human, just do the quest and enjoy your Gift of Renewal spell.

Enjoying the game is the ultimate goal for all of us :D

Nope, my characters are all Elves to take advantage of the +20 mana. It's super useful for these fighter builds since I don't have to put so much into Intelligence. I also got ahold of a bunch of SSI stuff from someone on my shard and I can drop an Ettin in about 3-4 seconds. Totally insane since I remember Ettins used to be super hard for me to kill.

I guess I just need to keep at it and plow through so I can get up to higher levels of skills and fight bigger and nastier baddies now. Still under 60, but I was training my mage this weekend. I found some people who helped me with the Spellweaving quest and I found a vendor who had a few scrolls. Super useful.
