this is a video on youtube talking about WOW.
i know, WOW, who cares..... BUT
go to the 3:00 minute mark and watch for 30 seconds.
they are talking about the size of WOW if it where a real land mass, then all of a sudden the guy drops a UO reference, kinda took me off guard.

Adding up all the over world in each facet, which doesn't account for dungeons or whatever is underground the entire world (Tram, Fel, Lost Lands, Ilsh, Malas, Tokuno, and SA) comes in just over 20.5 square miles, or 55.9 square kilometers. These are using rough measurements as well, since some of the areas aren't perfectly square.

Just for comparison, I remember the promotional materials for Skyrim stating it covered the equivalent of +/-16 square miles.

Really, that's incredible. I felt like it took forever to travel by foot anywhere in that world...it just felt so huge. For comparison Trammel/Felucca are approximately 7.7 square miles.

I remember a video from one of Skyrim's game designers stating it covered 16 square miles, and it was heavily quoted online after that.

One player actually did a step-off: Skyrim's heightmap is rectangular and uses 119 x 94 = 11186 in-game "cells". The engine uses the same cell size as in Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas - 57.6 metres (63 yards) to the side, 3317.76 m² (3 969 square yards) of area. The full map thus has an area of about 37.1 km² (14.3 square miles). Around a quarter of this is not playable, stuck behind invisible borders.

The biggest difference in "size" of Skyrim vs UO, is the adventure and fun-factor of Skyrim petered out after about 100+ hours, while it's still going strong in UO after 15+ years.

Naw.. not even 2 years yet. Was released 11/11/2011. Took a few months of a UO break on 11/12/2011 lol. Like Winter said though, after about 100 hours of gameplay, it kinda lost its appeal to me. Bethesda gams are not too kind to me either. Had technical issues with the past 4 ive played, both on PC and PS3. (Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas). Sucks to put 100+ hours into something, and have it go poof... more than once... on 3 different games.

It's not really fair to compare a single player game to an MMO.
