Maybe someone can tell me why "Ogmundr" is unacceptable in UO?

Stumped by an unacceptable name in character creation

Wait...so you're telling me if there's 'gm' anywhere in a name,it gets rejected...and other names that I will not say here gets a pass on the name filter? Who would think that my character is a GM because of that name? Would anyone be that dense?

Not saying anyone is that dense, but it is the only reason i can come up with. and i just tried to name a character "sgmsss" and i got the unacceptable name reply. so it would seem that gm anywhere in the name rejects it.
too bad, id like to name a character Bogman.

try "assassin" if you want to test the filter
Lazy coding with simply using an 'INSTR' function instead of looking for <Space>GM or GM<Space>. Clearly RedGMTurner isn't going to fool anyone, besides the filter of course.
Emilie, and other ways to spell it is now unacceptable, because of the EM. I found this out when I had to make new characters on other shards to collected the gifts.

I created a city in Sim City 5 (yes I play it, flame away) and I named the Region "Seeds and Nuts" (it's an inside joke with a friend, the nuts refer to insane people) and it let me create the Region but censors it to "Seeds and ****"
I think as a society we are overly sensitive about words. To censor "GM" in the middle of a word, real or fictional, is overkill.

Ogmundr is an old Norse name that basically means fearful or fiercesome. I wanted to use it for my necro...oh well.

That is what I had to do when naming my refinement vendors. Got them all named ( i have one vendor per refinement type) then when i got to ringmail it kept spitting it back as not allowed. I was like WTF is this? I had to put Ring-mail Refinements to let it accept the name. Stupid.
So you can make a character named G-M Ando but you can't have gm in the middle of a name. Classic.

I don't think that Og-mundr would work. That name looks more orcish,troll,or ogre to me. *shrugs* Maybe I'll just name mine "Vertical Smile". That name gets a pass from the filter.

True enough but the program has programmers...which I hope has some grey matter between the ears. I understand wanting to stop any player from posing as a GM,but com'on!
It is a program....created by humans...and pretty lazily I might add. There are much better ways to filter out unacceptable from acceptable. It is pure lazy coding.
I am a psychology major and was shocked to find that Sigmund Freud was unacceptable, especially with names of movie stars, political figures, and serial killers being used. Not to mention I have an old joke toon named Two Dolla Ho.....

The Reason it tosses you back to the beginning was way back when you could bypass the filter by back paging on the creation pages.. and get the name you wanted... this caused quite a stir when a few Dev and GM names popped up and got their tush in deep trouble.
I agree the programmers need to look at the filter and make a few tweaks.....

In fact back in the day when they had the companion program for young players the first I was a companion too was a fellow by the name of "Up Yours". I knew it was going to be a long day.

Name him Josef Breuer instead.
Its just 10 years old, and probably real low on the list of things to update. Is annoying though. Still annoyed I can't put the word "association" in my guild name.

Ahhh...In most other games I have ever played my character had been named Bagman and I had no idea why I could never use that name in UO. Thank must be it

And every one of those movie star, political figures, serial killers, and such are all against the RoC/ToS for UO. They however don't nearly enforce it as they used to. I once had a Colonel Angus that got renamed by a GM for being "offensive".

In the early days got pulled to jail for the random NPC rename of a character. Asked if I had any other characters that might need a rename. Seems U R Fubar was OK and character still wears the name. Funny thing was I had been hunting alone for hours in the dankest darkest area of the game and a GM found me. I even had to explain what Bohica stood for before the name change. Even the remarking of runestones can be a mind blowing task.
My favorite is trying to mark a rune for the "Compassion" shrine. I think writing it "Comp@$$ion" makes the ass stand out so much more.
The one I haven't been able to figure out is "Staggering" which is on my main tavern house sign. Perhaps Staggering is a nick name for the developer that wrote the obscenity filter code.
This morning I tried to make a blacksmith named "Jade Smith". UO would let me make Jade Jones.
Maybe someone can tell me why such a common name as "Smith" is unacceptable in UO?

I had a character named "John the Minter" which promptly got me paged on while wandering around Brit bank during the Enron fiasco. I had preset macros saying stuff like 'I work with Enron, you can trust me', 'I'll take your money and invest in fine organizations like Enron!' , etc,...
I got called a hacker and cursed at for having said name by players. I then had to explain to a GM that I never hacked anything just simply made the character long before name filters existed. In fairness to the GM, he was nice enough to give me another name which I later found out is impossible to create and pretty damn neat

To the latter, you could have had a preset macro, "Sorry, I've just been shut down by the FDIC. We're being acquired by the Bank of Skara Brae."
Got accused of being a hacker by a few players as in "Hey dip$%*# hacker. Hows it feel to get banned because you hacked yourself an illegal name. I just paged on you" and "Kiss your account bye bye you hacking bag of $%*#. I have no idea how you got that name but its not gonna matter in 3mins a$$hole".
I was surprised how rude & angry folks got over a silly name. It was like all of a sudden I was hated simply because I had something they didn't or couldn't. Seemed like 1/3 of Brit bank turned into a lynch mob over some stupid NPC name. People can be so weird sometimes.....

in this game.... no.
I've seen some of what shows up at that Virginia convention. some are down right scary
There's something about MMORPGs that brings out hypocrisy and irrationality in people. I'd bet half of those who paged were the ones just after 9/11 naming characters after a certain terrorist, prompting the only time I know of that a specific proper name was forbidden.
Ah.............. guess I got him in under the bell then a I have a character named Titus the Bear....
In my days as a robed lady I chased after a lot of "missed named kiddos" and even had to find the owner of 3 packies who were .......well very colorfully named... who stood there and argued that he didn't have to change them and I wouldn't be able to make him change them......
