Maybe someone can tell me why "Ogmundr" is unacceptable in UO?
OgmundrMaybe someone can tell me why "Ogmundr" is unacceptable in UO?
Wait...so you're telling me if there's 'gm' anywhere in a name,it gets rejected...and other names that I will not say here gets a pass on the name filter? Who would think that my character is a GM because of that name? Would anyone be that dense?Ogmundr
Not saying anyone is that dense, but it is the only reason i can come up with. and i just tried to name a character "sgmsss" and i got the unacceptable name reply. so it would seem that gm anywhere in the name rejects it.Wait...so you're telling me if there's 'gm' anywhere in a name,it gets rejected...and other names that I will not say here gets a pass on the name filter? try "assassin" if you want to test the filterWait...so you're telling me if there's 'gm' anywhere in a name,it gets rejected...and other names that I will not say here gets a pass on the name filter? Who would think that my character is a GM because of that name? Would anyone be that dense?
Lazy coding with simply using an 'INSTR' function instead of looking for <Space>GM or GM<Space>. Clearly RedGMTurner isn't going to fool anyone, besides the filter of course.Ogmundr
Ogmundr is an old Norse name that basically means fearful or fiercesome. I wanted to use it for my necro...oh well.I created a city in Sim City 5 (yes I play it, flame away) and I named the Region "Seeds and Nuts" (it's an inside joke with a friend, the nuts refer to insane people) and it let me create the Region but censors it to "Seeds and ****"
I think as a society we are overly sensitive about words. To censor "GM" in the middle of a word, real or fictional, is overkill.
*spits out his hay straw* Naw!!put a hyphen between G and M
That is what I had to do when naming my refinement vendors. Got them all named ( i have one vendor per refinement type) then when i got to ringmail it kept spitting it back as not allowed. I was like WTF is this? I had to put Ring-mail Refinements to let it accept the name. Stupid.put a hyphen between G and M
So you can make a character named G-M Ando but you can't have gm in the middle of a name. Classic. That is what I had to do when naming my refinement vendors. True enough but the program has programmers...which I hope has some grey matter between the ears. I understand wanting to stop any player from posing as a GM,but com'on!no one said the filter has a brain.... its a program kiddos not human..
It is a program....created by humans...and pretty lazily I might add. There are much better ways to filter out unacceptable from acceptable. It is pure lazy coding.no one said the filter has a brain.... its a program kiddos not human..
We had a guy named Vertical Smile on CatskillsI don't think that Og-mundr would work. That name looks more orcish, troll,or ogre to me. *shrugs* Maybe I'll just name mine "Vertical Smile". That name gets a pass from the filter.
Lord knows everyone here loves being called "kiddo"no one said the filter has a brain.... its a program kiddos not human..
I agree I have seen a lot of weird names over the years In fact back in the day when they had the companion program for young players the first I was a companion too was a fellow by the name of "Up Yours". I knew it was going to be a long day.You would be surprised at some of the names I have seen over the years....
Sorry about Sigmund Freud.. considering I have roses from Jung and a few other famous shrinks...
The Reason it tosses you back to the beginning was way back when you could bypass the filter by back paging on the creation pages.. and get the name you wanted... this caused quite a stir when a few Dev and GM names popped up and got their tush in deep trouble.
I agree the programmers need to look at the filter and make a few tweaks.....
Yeah, that's why I referenced it.We had a guy named Vertical Smile on Catskills
Name him Josef Breuer instead.I am a psychology major and was shocked to find that Sigmund Freud was unacceptable, especially with names of movie stars, political figures, and serial killers being used. Not to mention I have an old joke toon named Two Dolla Ho.....
Its just 10 years old, and probably real low on the list of things to update. Is annoying though. Still annoyed I can't put the word "association" in my guild name.Lazy coding with simply using an 'INSTR' function instead of looking for <Space>GM or GM<Space>. Clearly RedGMTurner isn't going to fool anyone, besides the filter of course.

too bad, id like to name a character Bogman.
Our game, their rules.Who cares?
Their game, their rules.
G A L
And every one of those movie star, political figures, serial killers, and such are all against the RoC/ToS for UO. They however don't nearly enforce it as they used to. I once had a Colonel Angus that got renamed by a GM for being "offensive".I am a psychology major and was shocked to find that Sigmund Freud was unacceptable, especially with names of movie stars, political figures, and serial killers being used. Not to mention I have an old joke toon named Two Dolla Ho.....
*Laughs at rule enforcement while pondering why the other non rule breaking terms are disallowed*Ultima Online Naming Policy
You are encouraged to choose a name that represents your character in the way you want to be seen (for instance, a character named "Big Bird" may not be taken as seriously by others as a character with a more contextually appropriate name such as "Lothar"). However, we also ask that good discretion be used when choosing names for characters, guilds, titles, houses, pets, or any other item or entity in game which can be custom-named. Examples of inappropriate names include, but are not limited to:
- Any name that violates the Rules of Conduct or Terms of Service. This includes names that are racially motivated, sexually graphic, anatomical and excretory references, hateful, defamatory, ethnically derogatory, in reference to hate groups, or any other names that would be offensive in nature including homonyms. Simply, if your name defames any demographic or is in poor taste you are likely to be actioned.
- Any name that violates any third party trademark, copyright or other propriety right.
- Names of any Electronic Arts employee or any customer service representative of Electronic Arts, past or present.
- Any name that is defamatory or attempts to defame the reputation of another account holder, an employee of Electronics Arts, property of Electronic Arts or Electronic Arts itself. The use of derogatory, defamatory or offensive content in conjunction with names of famous or important historical, political or religious figures.
- Names of modern era serial killers or anyone, or group who have committed crimes against humanity in the past 100 years, or any name that is closely connected with these acts.
- Names of items, or proper names of NPCs in Ultima Online, as well as Ultima fiction names (e.g. Lord British, Lord Mondain, Exodus).
- Any name involving a combination of words that produces an offensive result. Masked profanity or slang which denotes offensive terms.
- Names which are website URL’s or the personal information of you or another.
- Misspellings, phonetic spellings, word combinations, or alternative spellings of any names that violate the above rules.
My favorite is trying to mark a rune for the "Compassion" shrine. I think writing it "Comp@$$ion" makes the ass stand out so much more.Even the remarking of runestones can be a mind blowing task.
This morning I tried to make a blacksmith named "Jade Smith". UO would let me make Jade Jones.Maybe someone can tell me why "Ogmundr" is unacceptable in UO?
Huh?Our game, their rules.
My guess would be the nger or ngers part, but not sure.Since we are on the subject, why can I put he word "Ranger" in my guild name but can't use it as a guild title for my "Rangers" guild? Someone explain that!
LOL, it's the t-i-t part. I have an old char with that letter sequence in it.I tried to name my first guy Titus, but no sale there either.
How could you be hacking? Players would try to drop gold on you? Run up to you and say "Bank" or "vendor buy"?The SMITH one is because you can't name any characters NPC professions. I had a character named "John the Minter" which promptly got me paged on while wandering around Brit bank during the Enron fiasco. I had preset macros saying stuff like 'I work with Enron, you can trust me', 'I'll take your money and invest in fine organizations like Enron!' , etc,...
I got called a hacker and cursed at for having said name by players. I then had to explain to a GM that I never hacked anything just simply made the character long before name filters existed. In fairness to the GM, he was nice enough to give me another name which I later found out is impossible to create and pretty damn neat
in this game.... no.Got accused of being a hacker by a few players as in "Hey dip$%*# hacker. Hows it feel to get banned because you hacked yourself an illegal name. I just paged on you" and "Kiss your account bye bye you hacking bag of $%*#. I have no idea how you got that name but its not gonna matter in 3mins a$$hole".
I was surprised how rude & angry folks got over a silly name. It was like all of a sudden I was hated simply because I had something they didn't or couldn't. Seemed like 1/3 of Brit bank turned into a lynch mob over some stupid NPC name. People can be so weird sometimes.....
There's something about MMORPGs that brings out hypocrisy and irrationality in people. I'd bet half of those who paged were the ones just after 9/11 naming characters after a certain terrorist, prompting the only time I know of that a specific proper name was forbidden.Got accused of being a hacker by a few players as in "Hey dip$%*# hacker.
