Co-Owner question

I dropped a plot next door to my other account. Funny thing is, I was in the process of adding characters from one account to another, as co-owners.....in the house menu under security, it is showing only one character added, after I co-owned three already.

Secondly, I am able to have characters, not co-owned yet, walk right in the house, and it is set as private. Lastly, On my house that has been sitting there for a good long time, it is showing only one co-owner as well, and I know I co-owned all from my 2nd account.....

Question is, what's wrong here?? Is this a problem for a dev? A GM?..........can anyone walk into my house????? (doors are set for co-owner)

There was a change in the last publish with how co-ownership works. It is no longer based on the character, it is based on the account. So if you co-own one character, all characters on that account are co-owned.

You now co-own accounts, not characters - although only one name will show on the co-owner list, all characters on that account should be treated as co-owners now.

Wasn't it because one account had too many characters co-owned to a house which caused the account to be unable to record the characters UO INFO .. on that account *(forget how it worded but a white screen pops up saying uo can't record something about th character." The reason I ask is because I've been working on a new character in Atlanta and all the macros I made AGAIN for her did not apply, plus all the Icons on her screen, vanished when I log in. (As I log off I get the message Which is what I got again just now now as I tested it again = see at end of this reply which I should rewrite but RL is calling, sorry)

I hope it cured itself over night because I just shut everything down but since this has been happening lately quite often, on Sonoma too, I am concerned about the issue and am very interested in what is being said in this thread. When this used to happen, I would solve the problem by removing 'co-ownership' on one character or two, on the same account, and 'friend' those characters.

NOPE - Problem still exists: It reads:

fatal :
Could not open file for writing C:\Program files (x86)\EA Games\Ultima Online 2D client\account _name\Shard\Character\desktop.uos

Will reboot computer again. Grrr ..

Co-ownership isn't saved in your local files, rather, on the server. The error you're getting would be a separate issue, and it sounds like a permissions problem. Are you running UO (specifically client.exe) as an administrator?

Thank you for that advice. I am confused though. Why is it able to save my files for a long time then change to Fatal .. and then go back to working okay again without me doing anything to fix it. . Weird. It isn't healing itself this time, so my son might be able to look into the problem when he gets home from work. I am certainly not a computer expert.

If it's Windows, that itself is an explanation. :) Another thing to try is to delete the directory entirely.

Another thing your son can check is why your characters are saved in that location. On my PC, ever since Stygian Abyss, my \shard\character\ folders are saved in My Documents.

Here's my method of fixing things:

I kicked the computer.
Spanked the Keyboard.
Threatened both with extermination.
Tidied up the wire-connections so they wouldn't be crossing over each other.

REBOOTED

Then logged-in to UO and - you have probably guessed what happened =

ALL IS BACK to NORMAL.

Must be Gremlins at work in my computer ...

-- Yes. It is WINDOWS! Window's Explorer and Windows's McAfee programs want to take over my7 Google Search Engine and are fighting with my Norton Virus to have McAfee installed on my computer again to virus protect me from Norton.

Seriously though, I appreciate your advice and thank you for that, because it helps me learn how to find where files are located and what to do if I run into serious problems that can't be fixed by my usual methods. I seldom have to look at files so forget how to do so when things go wrong.

Good to hear! It might have a process holding onto the desktop.uos file, though rebooting should take care of it.

I don't know if you were serious, but if you're running either Norton or McAfee, I'd junk both for being so bloated. AVG was good but has also gotten to be a resource hog. Avast is pretty good, but I've gotten to like Microsoft Security Essentials.

This is a local issue on your computer. It might be that client.exe didnt shut down completly, and hangs as a invisible process. Try reboot - and if it happends again, open task manager and kill client.exe or reboot.

Always remember to run uo with admin rights.

All changes you do to your access rights are server side and saved there, not local based on your computer.

Even though this change was MUCH needed, it needs to show all char on the list. It is way to easy for someone to make a rouge char and take your stuff, even if you see them it could be too late and you have no way of knowing who it was if you have multiple people co-owned

Not sure I like how this was implemented but it is better than before.. at least now I can have guys from all 7 accounts co-owned and it doesn't eat up all the co-ownership slots..

Of course this just assumes you are smart enough to remember what you named all your characters.

I have no problems remembering the names of all my guys gals .. they are all called "Jade" except for me who is Jade of Sonoma when here. Hmmm ..

But which Jade is which is always a problem. One day I will start making a record of each Jade on each account.
By the way: When you said: "smart enough" - are you referrring to memory or Intelligence? I don't think I am senile yet, but might have a touch of recent memory loss as I age - or maybe so many years are stored in my poor brain it can't handle any more information - but I think I am intelligent enough to remember things if I don't forget them, like which Jade is which, so I try keep a record of each. Which Jade am I right now ? Oh Yes .. Jade of Sonoma.

by the way - We had a Great Dane named Jade.
When they called the dog, I would come.

... oooh I do yak a lot when I get tired and silly .. the painting up there is a noisey seagulll demanding my fish and chips. I titled it "Wordy Bird". Very appropriate as my avatar in here.

The problem
fatal :
Could not open file for writing C:\Program files (x86)\EA Games\Ultima Online 2D client\account _name\Shard\Character\desktop.uos.
is make sure when you log into that Acct/Chara you have not hit the space bar at the end of Acct name by chance, you will get this every time if you have done this by mistake. It has done it to me numerous times over the yrs if I do so.

Now that is very interesting. It is always something simple usually and would just be like that. Glad you posted. I of course, haven't noticed and never saw that connection to hitting the space bar accidentally and getting a fatal message when logging out of UO but considering there is no other explanation, since it heals itself all the time, I BET YOU ARE RIGHT! I will WRITE THAT IN MY TIP BOOK. Thank you so much. Oh what other players miss by not reading these forums and the input from everyone in here. haha . Thanks again. I am going to test that and will report back here to let you know what I find out.

Snakeman!!! YOU ARE RIGHT!!! What a keep KEEN observation you have made!

I got the FATAL MESSAGE using the space bar. So it is caused by a simple Typo error. hahaha
WOW .. I was trying everything trying to figure out how to CAUSE IT and control how it happens. Then you come along with that one. Great Going! APPLAUDS! haah Who would have thought? Just you!

Ok - hope I have i given you a swelled head will all this praise because I have another happening that needs an answer... *chuckles* Here goes.

I was testing your theory and one of mine.
I thought having two UO accounts open and on the Screen might be causing the problem. That isn't true.
On one account I didn't do any spacing and on the other I spaced after the Name and Password .. then there was a few problems to be dealt with in real life and I had to go chastise the dog which is a year old teenager by human terms .. and came back to continue testing your theory but my computer had SHUT DOWN .. which is something occurring all the time now because Windows 7 is in cahoots with McAffee virus protection and Windows 7 keeps upgrading my computer by automatically downloading McAfee Programs which I always have to get rid of becase they fight with my installed good version of NORTON... and on the battle goes with no solution to that problem yet

brb real life calling .. son is going to try fix it.

.. and YES ..

I then tried to log into the game and got that fatal warning
"could not open file for writing .. etc."

Sorry Jade.. I guess I should have said "If your memory is good enough." As far as intelligence goes I don't think it's very intelligent to Co-own so many people you can't remember who they all are. But that's just an opinion of course.

haha Hey Ludes, no need to apologize. I am sorry if I sounded as though you had hurt my feelings. You didn't. That's the trouble with the written word. No one can see you laughing. I am having problems remember which is which Jade but since most are just accounts with houses and the Jades I always use are the strongest, it's all good.
