Was just wondering if it was illegal to buy any item that will not go on a vendor? People seem to be buying them no matter what but can u get banned for buying them?

Buying Duped Items

Read the ToS/RoC for the game, of course KNOWINGLY buying a duped item is bannable, however simply open trading between players is not, it is just highly recommended to use vendors now. Although as another thread points out, the system is borked and LEGAL items are being refused by vendors, soooo.
Well, on Atlantic its quite a few spamming in general chat that they want to buy duped x-fer tokens or x-fer tokens that will not go on vendor. Wish a GM could just pick them out of the game - as they obviously asks for to buy illegal items.

some of you Rp'rs out there should roleplay a speakeasy. goto to some old cabin way out in the woods of minoc. knock the secret knock on the weathered door to be admitted. Inside you'll find every seedy type in uo hawking all kinds of duped items from slithers to tokens... even the old vine cord sandals that were supposedly erased years ago....
Firstly, to actually prove that someone is intentionally buying or selling a duped item would be a difficult case to make.
Most people don't/won't care if an item can go on a vendor, and that makes logical sense. If all items perform the same, then there is no difference, since you can just say "Selling Puppy Dog" in general chat to sell your duplicated puppy dog. The fact is duping has happened intentionally and unintentionally for the entirity of UO, but from 2003 onward we've had it at a much higher rate. With Atlantic crashing 5-6 times a day for a month or so, you can beleive 10000s of items were duplicated and im sure the majority were unintentionally. Then we had the revert, which you would take what I said and add a 0 to it. Then we had the retrive container bug, which was fixed quck but still. That's 3 cases of duping IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS.
That's why this "fix" is nothing more than lip service to show players (and the people signing those paychecks to the Devs) that the Dev team is more real than Santa Clause. Unfortunately all you've done is significantly segment your already small playerbase, with a fix that is not behaving properly. As Cdavbar mentioned, there are tons of reports in game about peoples items not being able to go on vendors, and not super rare items... random things... I had it happen with a HoM that was a few hours old, but general chat on all shards has been fun to explain to players that "EA broke it but hopefully theyll fix it"
Probably the dumbest idea by this specific Dev Team to date, you're hurting the people paying your subscriptions and NOTHING MORE. Most people that knowingly have duped goods will sell via general chat, knock a few mil off, and the world keeps turning. All you've done is hurt the player who isn't maliciously trying to move duped goods, who happens to have items misflagged or has an item or two that was duped somehow in the past decade.

They clearly cant identify duped items. The have clearly told us that they can, and implemented in game measures to prevent them from being sold on in game vendors.
Read that again, look at the evidence, and understand it. We now have a system that makes random items unable to be placed on vendors. How is this a good thing?

Keeping duped items off vendors is only a good thing and a great step in the right direction.
If some people bought unknowingly duped items(probably at a lower price)to use for themselves then I see no issue at all. They are going to use them so not being able to replace on a vendor is no issue at all.
If they bought those same items to resell for profit then I still see no real issue either as they were playing the market game.
It sux but if you want to play markets for profit then you always run the risk of getting burned(legally or illegally)
IMO most dupers simply are not going to do it as much if they have to try and sell the items themselves ingame. It was too easy for them before to simply place them on multiple vendors and just pick up their gold days later.
I wish there was a better system in place that would just catch them as they did it but until then I am quite happy with the new vendor changes.
I've been saying add the [Duped] tag since the get go who cares if you can't sell on a vendor..if someone is spamming Slither 100m I am going to use it not resell it in most cases what do I care if its duped..I don't..they didn't delete the duped in items in fear of a mass closing of account for people like myself who spend 100's of mils buying items not knowing if an item is duped. I have checked all my high end items and not one is duped which is a good thing, but not buying off a vendor doesn't sway anyone. I've already seen gen chat spam all day ..Selling Duped Xfer tokens 35m real tokens 45m guess what, he will sell out fast of duped im sure so if anything I say..Thanks for saving us 10m much appreciated.
..as for people still buying tagged [Duped] items..well to each their own I guess if one day they turn around and say ok all will be deleted its your own fault..but as it sits now the not being able to place on vendor does nothing in the fight to stop the mass selling of duped items, other than make them work harder by spamming gen chat

The "Duped tag would be a great idea if in fact only duped items got this tag. People are reporting items that are not dupes being treated as dupes so UO has not got it right and need to fix it b4 they go any further. If you really want to know where all the duped Xfer Tokens are comong from then look at the no-named RMT/Search sites, 5 tokens for the price of 3 RL$ from UOStore, tell me all those are not duped.
Well the non duped items is an issue they need to resolve..as for RMT sites..of course they are duped that's the problem, they continue to allow these people to profit off of people who play legit
