Farewell mate. A sad day for many.

EA has always been somewhat of a horror story. Through all the years of incompetence, I always thought EA suits were just a bunch of old (or aging) folks who couldn't step out of an 80's model of management and were just milking the company to their retirement. All the while mocking their customers while throwing our money at each other. But when times were good the few decent titles they did produce, manifested a cash cannon that they seemed to just fire and forget at whatever problems surfaced.

In UO alone how many clients have been built and failed? How many moves back and forth across the country? How many great developers were shown the door? Who in their right minds thought origin was a good idea?

But through it all I always took comfort that UO was safe and warm under a thick blanket of EA money. It was the only credit I gave EA as they just kept funding attempt after attempt hoping someday they would get it right. The EC failure and dev cut after SA launched were the two largest omens to me that things just weren't going to get any better from that point forward.

Now I feel UO is at a point where it would be if it were owned by a smaller mismanaged struggling company. I feel EA will never recover unless they start acting intelligently with the still considerable resources they have left. But I won't hold my breath. My hope for UO now is that EA decides they want out of the MMO market and just sells it or that sometime in the near future EA decides they have had a nice run of it and puts themselves on the auction block.

Dear Phoenix, thank you for all you did for our lovely game and for me. You know, exactly 1 year ago today on the 12th of april my dad died after a long fight vs cancer and especially UO's wonderfull designed world helped me over a very sad time....so you were a big part of my afford to help me get over the fact, my hero, strong as an ox, defender of my life, my creator, left me and the family, someone who could take on 3 alone and win, but losing against some inside crap, he couldnt beat with his fist, knife or gun.... I wish you all the best for your future and hope to see your work again soon! Make me happy, please! Greetings Ron

Mike, you going to go out and try to be a professional gambler (again)? I seem to remember some of your fellow AoS-era staff commenting back then on your first departure that you were going to try your hand at gambling tournaments - or were they just joking from you having taken their paychecks in games after work?
I played a lot of poker several years ago. During the year after UO was moved to northern California, I became a regular at Artichoke Joe's in San Bruno. I mostly played the 3/6 and 6/12 limit games, and occasionally stepped up to the 10/15. I played tournaments every other weekend, and went deep in the money a couple times. I also started playing online a bit, and continued that after I moved back to Texas to go work on Tabula Rasa. I once managed to luck my way into winning an all-expense-paid trip to London to play in a tournament that was televised live, where I played against three pros and two other amateurs. I won the first round, which got me about $7500 in prize money, and busted out in the second round.

For a time there, it was looking like Texas was going to pass legislation to allow poker rooms in the state, but in the end it got buried on the schedule and got defeated for lack of being brought up for a vote. Over the years I slowly lost interest, and when the DoJ finally shut down online poker in the US I didn't have any money in it any more.

All in all I'm a slight net winner. I was never good enough or bankrolled enough to turn pro. I still play in friendly games, though, and even played some live Omaha Hi-Lo at the Charles Town Races over in West Virginia a couple months back. :)

I can't tell you how disappointed I am to know you're leaving us. One of the only developers left who was around when the original code was written. You were one of the only archaeologists still there to interpret the code. ACK!
Well, I didn't even start on UO until after Renaissance. But I'm proud to say that I worked on it so long that I once started cursing the programmer who wrote a particular piece of script I was debugging -- and when I looked up the revision history I realized I was cursing myself.

Phoenix aka Vex, please tell us, did you finish working on the currency issue, making gold account bound? I was pretty sure this was one of your many projects, and would like some feedback. I haven't heard anything since the 15th anniversary party.
I honestly have no idea what is on the schedule for UO now. The accounting back-end for the Fortune's Fire casino was designed to be expandable, so that it could form the basis for the virtual currency conversion.

Also I knew it was possible you were adding some form of Texas Hold'Em to the Fire Island Casino, will that still happen?
That is something I argued with myself over whether it should be done. It's definitely something I would have liked to do, but: 1> It would have taken ten times as much work to build than it did to make the player-versus-the-house table games; 2> The audience for it likely would not have been broad enough to justify the investment; and 3> There's the basic question of why would we build a modern card game into UO instead of working directly on the core game.

Mike, you will be missed. we had a very good discussion about the martingale system and how it related to the casino that was designed and in my mind it was one of the most thought inducing informative information exchanges that i've seen these past 6 years i've played this game.
It works...right up until it doesn't. ;)

Please tip a glass for me this weekend and I will surely pop a good bottle of Cab tonite in your honor. Good things happen to good people so I'm sure you will land on your feet. All the best to you my friend and thank you very much for all the contributions you have made to the Lands of Sosaria and take applause to all the peoples whose lives you have made better in bringing them daily enjoyment in what seems to becoming a more joyless world by the day.

Salute.
Thank you very much. I'm doing rum and cokes lately. Cheers!

I made a pretty lengthy post that was fairly obscene (even though I tried my best to control myself) about what I thought about video games in general in somebody's ultima retropsective thread. While it doesn't pertain to this particular situation (Phoenix I don't even drink anymore, but I'm probably gonna go slam a few for you) I have to say I think most people saw this coming.

I wasn't going to log in 'till I realised it was you. Another mask to add to my wall of fame.

Farewell and hope you find something equally as 'fun' to work on.

I logged in to say your profile picture makes me edgy and I don't know why LOL. I shall miss seeing it.

Sorry you have to go. Mean it too.

With the coming of a new Leader at EA's helm it was bound to make layoffs..
The Board has little to do with what has become a habit with EA.
But the debockle of The Sims and a few other misplaced points of bad judgement in rushing other titles out in underproduced states. The acting management is shall we say cutting everything that is not nailed down. To show they are on top of it.
I expected a small shake up, but not to this degree that they would kill off so many staff, including us. UO has had its staff cut to the bone as it is.
I for one did not think EA would go that low to chip off a few dollars to make its books look better.
With this move... one tends to think EA is sinking in the tubes fast... and no new CEO will save it...

Thank you for everything you did, Phoenix, for all of your work.

You know, I started my account in November, 1997. A few months ago, I found myself standing at the bank in Haven, showing off some of my trinkets from the first holiday season rewards. The guy I was showing them off to told me how old he is. He's in his mid-teens, loves the game, knows it like the back of his hand.

Those holiday trinkets of mine are older than he is.

I believe something about Ultima Online that I can't say I 100% believe about any other MMORPG. I believe UO will always be around; whether EA or someone else is hosting it, people will still be playing this game 10, 20, 30 years from now. It is a masterpiece, and in the way of roguelikes and nethacks, there is something intrinsic about it that just won't ever get too old to matter. It will continue to bring joy into peoples lives. And you are one of its artists.

Enjoy thy immortality, sire, but this only affirms what good--what truly meaningful work--you're capable of bringing into the world. So live up to your name, Phoenix, and ride on toward thy next victory come Monday!

For us another reminder how small our team is. And we hope for new content, wish for improvements and demand balane and bug fixes.. We love UO and get carried away all the time. Perhaps time to grow up a bit and become more realistic:sad4:

So disappointed to see you go Phoenix. I forsee a day when the Dev Team is nothing but Mesanna staring at Jeff and sayign "What Now ?".
Maybe Garriott would be interested in your knowledge of UO and it's Lore.
Regardless...Best of Luck wherever Fortune takes you :)

Where would we be without this dev team? i'm going to go out and enjoy the neverending fun of the Void Pool to earn some exciting Ephemeral items. Then I'm going to join the throngs killing Charybdis to get my very own Epiphany Armor, always in heavy demand. After that I'll participate in the totally thriving Faction system while I await the beloved and highly-anticipated Armor Refinements.

Sorry to see one of them go, they really have their finger on our collective pulse.

Best wishes sir and thank you for everything you have done for UO. You cracked me up when you mentioned fixing "someone else's" code and cussing them until you realized it was your own code. Maybe you could do a gig being a gigolo for hot lonely ladies and relax the mind for a stretch? :smooch: As someone mentioned in a previous post, you can't go anywhere but up after leaving EA.

May the future be bright and full of adventure,
Peace
