Where did all the UO players migrate to?

UO is clearly not what it use to be. All the players though, where did they go I'm wondering?

I have played UO for a long time now, and I've tried many other MMO since then, but they all have the same thing in common. PvP sucks. Also, I find that leveling up my character is more fun than the actual end game... that's not good at all LOL. Could you imagine if you felt that way about UO?

I haven't played a game that could keep me hooked on the PvP. I'm always comparing these new games coming out with amazing graphics to lil' ol' UO.

Even the latest one, guild wars 2, which was suppose to be revolutionary pvp, turned out as a huge dislike for me.

So back to my original question, where did all the UO players move to? Is there a utopia somewhere I don't know about? I'm just looking for a game where I can level my character and have fun when he is leveled, not get to end game and say, " now what? "

And also, do you UO players have the same problem as me with games? Did UO ruin MMOs for you ? :p

Eh, In the guild I am in we have 103 (counting me) ex UO players in GW2.

We love GW2 so not sure what your issue is because the pvp rocks imo. Play on Jade Quarry so we are used to being on top.

UO didnt ruin any other MMO for me. If you keep comparing any other game to UO it isnt going to work for you. They can be like UO in some ways but if you want a UO then just play UO and accept the game and population as it is :)

Most of the people I've played with over the years have migrated here or there but great numbers of them found something others are still searching for. Real Life. They have married had children moved on from the fantasy that is the MMO and moved into the real world... full of work and stress and child rearing... They spend their days toiling and slaving to pay the man.

I spend my days toiling and slaving to sail away. Far away to a land filled with possibilities yet undiscovered... To spend my nights and weekends in Fantasy... Where "the man" has no powers over me. Where I can be free to be whatever I want. So long as "the man" gets paid...

My children have grown... I have time for a little fantasy in my life. Some believe they no longer have or need it.

No matter where they migrate to...they always come back. 9 yrs and I have never said "what now?". I still learn sumthin new every day and haven't yet visited 3/4 of the UO world. It's not just a game to play, it's a life to live and love. Great Lakes

Many of the once UO adicts have found the challenges of Real Life calling and more overpowering a pull. Some who started UO intheir late Teens in high school and college now find no time for games as the work place has them by the nose to the grind stone and the wallet.. and then you add in the girlfriend/wife who now has rights to their off time... then add in a few kids... your down to the only private time you got is the time you visit the wash room!
Now for the Older Player of old you got family growing and needing more of your "free" time... scoccer/football/tennis/insert sport here practice... the days are filled with no time!
Weekends you need to catch your breath???? That too is bundled up in yard work and again family... UO is the furthest from your mind much less any other mmo out there...
We who are not stuck in that grinder.... well there is a ton of games out there to lure you off with promises of better fun in many areas... pvp is a major thing on some games and there is a few that is nothing but pvp... UO is also a victom of EA bad management.. ie the Billing system... I know of a good 3 dozzen returning players who after trying the system got soo mad they said *** this and requit... and Many NEW players have a hell of a time just getting the game on the comp to begin with...... I am nto saying our Dev is at fault.. EA has cut them loose and given them the shaft alot these days ... No GM's or so few available that the help button is in perma busy mode.

Now I will say there is another reason many are poofed to outer space ..... a enity started a book and Chat campaigne to draw players to Atlantic.. The theme was heavy pvp, better selling of goods and more players to boot, large guilds in full play... only down fall was it chipped away other shards populations that otherwise would have kept the shards looking fairly stable. Now I cant say all shards are Bare... most do have a stable population but there is a time reference to when they are on playing ... Dont get me wrong.. some shard could use more players ..but as it sits the influx of new and reurnig players is minimal.... and I am not sure if any thing moe can be done to bring more in that EA will do...

'fraid the current population in UO doesn't really do much to validate that statement.

I'd say most of my friends simply got too busy for gaming. When we started playing UO we were pretty much all in college and had plenty of free time on our hands. We're all adults now with job commitments, families and all that stuff. Gaming as a whole took a backseat.

For those who still play games, their free time is very limited due to the aforementioned circumstances. No longer can they invest huge amounts of time in UO or other games to acquire items to compete in PvP or whatever so they play games which are more casual friendly. I'd class WoW and GW2 in that bracket, but a lot simply play the occasional Xbox 360/PS3/WiiU game online now; just something they can pick up and play without too much prep. work.

Personally, I still play UO occasionally but most of my gaming time is spent playing the above mentioned MMOs. I find it's just easier to jump in play for an hour or so and make progress whilst chatting to my friends using the whisper/cross-realm private messaging system. UO's social features are really lacking and most people these days would consider a friends list which shows you when people are online and the ability to send private messages to people as the fundamental basics. UO actually makes it quite annoying to simply interact with people you know without having to be stood next to them or by using 3rd party utilities.

Recently had 2 return.... to what? They were bored in 2 days and left.

Who's going to play but us too invested to leave? Who will play but those scammers and the scammed? Who will play but those who are milking the others until the last bit of blood and tears are gone from this land. Sadly I'm waking to the reality that the game has lost what long held me here... community. It is now about greed and stuff and no longer about friends and community. It's now all about making a buck and turning a dime... Gone is the RP the community and the love of adventure. That's what brings folk back.... And those days are gone.

What I see now in people that return is they don't want to use the Bachelors degree in physics just to build a suit so they can grind whatever the new cash cow is. They come back to find that everything they once knew and loved is gone. All anyone cares about is gold and obtaining it... PvP grind is an impossibility without a 300billion dollar investment in stuff. From the "must have" robe that is 54 million to the gotta get it totem that is another 120million or more.... 400 million in crap obtained from the Abyss.... Relics and seeds that must be grown over weeks and weeks or ground out from 100's of hours in the Abyss.... And forget community it's every man for himself! No more going to your friends and getting that valorite heavy archer set and be on your way... No more lets take the guild on a hunt because it's a soloists world out there and no one wants to share if there is nothing in it for them....

What no arties? No 100million dollar item! Go and do something like *gasp* Talk in-game??? What like chat? No like RP... you know go to the Tavern and throw back a few pixelated drinks and talk about adventure.... Write a poem and share it .... why? What do you get for that? A fun time. That's fun? Just wasted 20 min of my life listening to you talk. Showed up at the EM event and all he did was talk. Didn't get anything...... have no idea what was going on because some guild was there all standing around constantly spamming greater cure and I kept crashing... in-between their constant blubbering about not getting a drop and what was the drop and how many dropped what are they worth.....

And we wonder why no one plays anymore.

All of these statements are correct. But it hasn't stopped me in 9 yrs. I take breaks but always return. Simply because it is a great escape. It is a life different from my own "working my fingers to the bone for my entire life just to pay bills and never have a single thing to show for it and nobody appreciates your honesty, kindness and hard work" existance. In UO when I work my tail off I see results. I can craft all my own armor. I can build all my own furniture. I can tinker any tool I need and scribe any spell I wish to cast. I can decorate my very own 4 story house and sail my very own ship around the seas. I can wonder the UO worlds aimlessly just exploring and defend myself pretty well should I need or wish to. I can help new players in almost any way they need and they appreciate it. They even say "Thank you". Do you know how many times I have ever heard that from an employer after 10 yrs of blood sweat and tears? 0 Or from a store employee when I make a purchase? 0 I am a trusted individual on Great Lakes. It's very refreshing to be in an environment like that. Yes there are scammers, haters, and undesireables. Yes there are those only worried about money and big ticket items. I don't have to be part of their world. The UO lands are vast. I just go to the other side. I am never bored, theres too much to do and see. I do most stuff alone but if I find something I want to do and can't do it alone there is always someone willing to join in. UO has been a perfect getaway for me all these years and I think that's what a game should be about. :ten:

Can't say as I blame you. It hurts still being here and seeing what remains day in day out. You listen in chat and it's nothing but selling and buying or smack talk. And folk look to the DEV's in hopes that they will inspire them to stay but instead we get half answers and obvious oblivion. Folk look at that and say "They don't even know what we are asking. Do they even know UO at all? How can we hold hope that UO will once again rise from the slump if the DEV's don't even know what we are asking for or what we are asking about?"

Even my faith is waning... and it breaks my heart.

I get a kick out of these threads...

The die hard "Jurassics" lobby against changing the 2D UO Client and where are they 2-3 years later? Playing some other game....

Meanwhile we're stuck with a ****ty client that can't attract new players.

With graphics right out of Ultima 7: The Black Gate UO will continue to suffer from attrition because it lacks the ability to attract new players.

"Where is everyone!?"

"You mean all those players who were against updating the UO Client to attract new players!?"

Einstein's theory of insanity at work.

Sorry! I was for updating the CC to a better graphics. The EC not my thing but it may be for others. I did like the KR graphics though :)

I left for other reasons but lets start with...Population, community and for something new :) just to name a few

I post here for the community itself because it can be a downer and negative festival at times. A healthier and positive community can gain more momentum and UO is more widely talked about on many sites than most here know. Is it all good? No. Is it all bad? No. You get both but people move on for various reasons but I do agree that the CC is a huge huge issue in todays MMO's.

I loved the KR Graphics as well. The EC Client is nothing but a stable version of the KR client minus the high res graphics.

Oh man...my beloved UOKR! How I miss it!:sad2:

Another thing I get a kick out of, and we've been hearing it more and more over the past couple of years, is players actually giving the EC client a try for a lengthy period of time and then they're admit-tingly not able to go back and play the CC Client.

I still remember vividly my reaction to playing UOKR for about 6 months and then logging into the 2D client. It was like "Holy $%#!, How did you ever play in this client for all those years. I'm never going back to CC ever!".

I'll continue to hope and pray that one day by some miracle UO gets KR art back or some other form of high resolution art gets put into this great game.

KR was a good and right step in a direction for UO. Keeping that classic feel but very much improved look.

Now all the KR haters will be hating me but oh well :p

I still play UO, but not as much as "back in the day" or at other times of increased activity. Right now, other than UO, my gaming time has been in Path of Exile (since Diablo 3 decided to FULLY go down the road of suck) and will probably in the future will decide which one wins between Ultima Forever (already taking a HUGE misstep by being iOS only at release) and Shroud of the Avatar (ambitious?, or rubbish?).

On Europa. I have seen a steady flow of returning and new players over the last few weeks, I doubt we will ever get the numbers we once had, but people are coming back, trying it for the first time, and actually staying, but for how long, that is anyone's guess.

2 of the biggest mistakes made in UO, was one EA for years refusing to advertise UO properly, hell it is even buried on the Origin site, you have to use the search option for find it, even though it is had 15 years of success, and yes it is still successful, otherwise EA would have closed us down years ago. Secondly changing it to an item based game with Age of Shadows, the game is much more of a grind than it used to be, and that can put a lot of players off, I know I get bored out of my skull with it.

What kils it for new players is the cost of the items in game.....
you get a new item on a boss everyone and his brother is out there hunting them down and that first month perhaps 3 its going for so much gold that the average young or newer then most player jsut cant get it... the costof thigs is etehr so cheap no one bothers to go harvest them or it makes oodles of gold for 1 rare piece that the lower end player who cant spend time enough to get more then a few goid coins to rub together cant aford it. There is no happy medium.. New come in and get bored cause they cant find anyone to play with like this is a playground for kiddies... well that time for uo is well past... and we all know who is to blame for that.. EA should have had running ad's for UO in every mag and on line game reviewer site they couldgrab their dirty little fists on. Did they? hell no We are the trophy in the case that collects dust and is only polished when a milestone is reached and they can plug other items they got inthe hopper to fans who take a look to see the gradfather of modern gamers playground. UO get some air time?? to EA we have had our day and are the old relitive they hide in the closet when the company is coming to see the new kid.
If the stock reports are correct EA is making money even with the options they have UO is not even in their records for any type of love from the company heads.

It really hasn't been otherwise since pre-aos, where the average player could easily afford or go gather the resources necessary to play. Even then the most high end items ( valorite runics ) were out of reach for casual players. After AoS though this has been an issue, since the release of powerscrolls, artifacts, and runic armor.

The world has changed. The internet has changed. There are more flavors of MMO's and online games than Baskin Robbins 31 flavors of ice cream.

Wizard 101 boast over 30 million players. Mostly kids but there are many adults play the game since its family friendly. 10 bucks a month so even lets say half of those players pay each month. That is 150 million they rake in a month. They advertise on TV and the internet. No box or cd but all digital downlaod.

WoW boast about 8 million players atm maybe 10 but lets go with 8. You see them on TV and the internet. 15 bones a month which lets say 7 million pay each month and rake in 105 million a month.

GW2 boast 3 million copies sold and only 7 months old. Been on TV on many gaming shows, advertise on the net, did a MSNBC interview. Avergae sale 70 bones times 3 million ( last we was told on sales) and made just on sale of the game itself 210 million. Then lets add the gem store costs which I couldn't even take a guess what those sales are.

EA is not a MMO company. They are a gaming company. They have their hands in a little of everything but selling their products for console is their main source of cash. Oh Mythic may carry the brand of MMO's but as we see EA went F2P on their biggest MMO they banked on already

I could go on and on with companies so its not UO versus mudd games when UO was created. It's UO versus tons of different MMO's out there. Kids are trained to play games that level, pay to win, free to play, and better graphics. Thats the market the gaming companies are targetting. Look at all the HD consoles, tons of graphics out there.

Asking UO to be on the shelf, advertised on TV, or asking them to spend money in that department you will most likely get an EA exec to fall out of his chair laughing. They depend on the current player base to advertise, bring in players, do all their work for free but charge you to play their game. Why would they want to do the right thing and make more money when UO player base is already doing it for them and not costing them a cent? If they made more money do you think they would sink it back in UO or a UO2? I figure they would get a pay raise first and throw pennies to Mythic afterwards and say "deal with it".

Over all to many MMO's out in todays world and that will streatch UO very thin compared to other MMO's player base. UO never hit such numbers as any other mmo now days. The best thing is not to worry about whom went where and what are they playing. Enjoy UO. Enjoy the game. If you are not and worried about where they all go to, why did they go to this game or that, why are we not being mentioned, why are we not on TV your all going to get ulcers or something. I am not a docor but I did stay in my house last night :p

Kudawudashuda fits this very well. Dont worry where everybody is off to and focus on the community and players in the game. that is way more healthier for you and the UO community :)

I was on the way out the door when I stopped by Siege last November. I added game time in spite of being unable to change my account password yet. Call it strike one. I added game time last week even though I still couldn't change my account password. Call it strike two. If I can't change my password come June, that's strike 3 and I'm finishing that trip out the door I started last November.

Whether I dump the bankboxes into the houses for the IDOCers as a permanent kiss off to this game will depend on just how disgusted with EA I am when I leave.

The last 2 months, alot old UO players have been back and choosen Siege. It's not just boring players from other shards, who choose Siege as last stop before they leave UO, it's players who had not been playing for years, some who last played EA servers back before year 2000.

It's really amazing to see our shard back to life. Just in NEW2, we have seen 50+ new players in ´2013 who active play, and I have seen alot new and returning players who did not join NEW2.

Not to stray too far off topic, but Skyrim was an excellent game. I dumped hours and hours into it and still kept playing.

Waiting for Elder Scrolls Online to start beta testing.

If you haven't yet, you should check it out if you like Skyrim.

I've almost fully left for feathery shores now. Decided chickens were more interesting than UO. After all, UO can't stalk your back door begging for attention, or sneak in said door and eat all the cat and dog food. Hobby that feeds me and pays for itself.

UO did make me like rare pets. That has translated quite well.

I think it's much less how UO has changed and more how there are SO many more options today then there were when UO: Ren came out. Free to play, etc. MOBAs, MMORPGs, hybrids et cetera. Most of my friends left for Darkfall, SW, even browser RPGs. Also RL, but, Ren was the death of UO IMO. I was so disappointed to find out all Ren would be was a mirror of the existing world. If they had made Ren small, and just for housing and vendors, that would have changed everything. If only Trammel consisted of a unique facet instead of a mirror.

But yeah, tldr; UO never kept up with the times and there are so many other options now for gamers, let alone RL goals.

I think it would have been different actually if they had made FEL the "mirror" area and left the old established towns in the new "safe" area. This would have promoted fighting for house placement area's... and left old established towns and such to REMAIN. Not forcing those who wanted the calmer lifestyle to move.... but allowed those that like to battle it out to battle out house placement spots.

I am fairly sure that would have been the more wise choice.

However this is getting a bit off topic.

At a Weekly Guild Event I run on Atlantic, I usually see 2-5 returning players each week. Most say they have gotten bored of WoW. And all are amazed at how big Ultima Online has gotten. So we do our best to help them get a new start, and hope that our help encourages them to stay. The Game is only as Good as the Community it harbors. An MMO cannot exist for long with the feeling of Community, otherwise it's just a Single Player game with Non-NPC's running around.

WoW is one of those games where your lead by a ring in your nose through the quests in the game, level by level, little thought necessary, just do what your told.

UO lets you have all kinds of options for your characters skills and gear. There's no quests you have to do, nor do you have to do things in any real order other than a few specific goal multi-step quests the devs have tossed into the game as not-required-to-be-done play options.

When KR came out I was kinda against it, but I do have to admit the graphics (although bogging my system at the time) were great. I tend to bounce between clients now depending on what I'm going to do. Shoulda been in the CC when I participated in an EM event on Napa... the lag in the new client was so bad almost fried my poor laptop and I could barely move.

Yeah, yah, I need a decent gaming machine again. All this programming and I don't have a decent gaming machine... go figure.

That aside - am finding _some_ decent activity on Napa again. Not as much as the hey-day, but enough to keep a girl interested in logging on. Once I get a decent machine though, hehe... :pirate: gonna get the high seas and be a pirate! YARRR!

May have to look into transferring to Jade Quarry then... Crystal Desert at the moment I think.

If you ever played DaoC, JQ has many ex DaoC players also who love the WvW. Atm Blackgate is giving us the best competition we have had in some time. Tons of battles..

PvE wise the game is full and plenty of peeps around. You should try guesting JQ just for PvE before you jump over to make sure.

I do figure many ex UO players do play on many servers though. I may as well add some current UO players because GW2 has no monthly fee and just buy the game and you can play when you want.

Yeah the no monthly fee is excellent. I feel like I play it less than I should because of it though.

I came back after 3 years and i really enjoyed the year or so i spent. Unfortunately i found myself unable to commit any time to UO. It's just not the kind of game i can pick up and put down. In the end, i banked my stuff and just took a break from it. Perhaps i will return one day but for now i will leave it where it is. Playing other games is possible because they don't kill my time the way UO does and thats why i will always love and come back to this game.

Two jobs, kids/grandkids... My free time is now spent teaching my little ones how to shoot at the pistol/rifle/archery range.
