What Makes Ultima Online Unique

To Whom It May Concern,

There are always rumours floating around about the imminent demise of any MMO. They usually start before the game's beta, and don't let up until the plug truly is pulled on the game. I have no reason to believe the plug is about to be pulled on our beloved UO, but I thought now was as good a time as any to remind the executives at EA why Ultima Online is more than just another MMO - why it actually matters to it's clients specifically, and gamers and the the gaming universe in general.

1. Ultima Online holds a unique place in the history of Western gaming culture. It was the first true Western MMO, and one of the first MMO's in the world. There were one or two Korean (I believe) MMO's that predated Ultima Online, but for gamers in the Western world, Ultima Online holds a historically significant place, and it has gone on to be the longest running MMO, and as far as I know, one of the most financially successful in the history of the genre. It was a pioneering product, and as such holds a place of honour in the history of MMO gaming, and computer gaming as well.

2. Ultima Online itself, as a game and a gaming product, is utterly unique. There simply isn't anything else like it out there. There is no other MMO that appeals to such a diverse client base. From grandmothers, to testosterone charged teenagers, Ultima Online truly offers a unique gaming experience for all ages and playstyles, in a way that no other MMO that I am aware of has ever matched. From it's isometric perspective, to the existence of a true 2D graphical client, to pvp that is timing based, and tactically and strategically challenging in a way that no other MMO that I am aware of can match, it truly is unique.

3. Because of it's low graphical processing demands, the 2D client is uniquely suited to being developed for mobile devices in a way that no other major commercial MMO that I am aware of is. The potential audience for Ultima Online in the mobile market is huge, and this is something that the development team, and EA itself, should take very very seriously. There are lots of games out there for mobile devices, and more are being developed and released every day, but there are very few that can match Ultima Online's level of immersion, or it's broad appeal.

Lastly, I would request, if the time ever does come for the plug to be pulled on our grand old game, that EA would put gamers first, and show gamers and the world of gaming the degree of respect that, as a major gaming publisher, should be a part of it's corporate culture. I would respectfully and humbly request that EA would consider turning over the source code for the clients and the server, and the perhaps even the databases for the shards, to the Open Source community, along with the intellectual property rights for Ultima Online (not for the entire Ultima franchise, just for Ultima Online itself).

Todays smartphone actually can run 3D games without problems.
Furthermore lots support resolutions up to 1920x1080. This would make the tiny 800x600 game area of the classic client even tinier on such a display. (So I'd say, the enhanced client would fit even better.)
Control through touchscreen only could provide a very limited experience.

EA is working on Ultima Forever for iOS. They clearly don't want to market the UO 2D graphics ;P. I doubt UO would ever end up on phones and tablets. Adding support for another OS when you all ready work on two clients seems kind of like a tough proposal.

I also doubt EA would release source code. Besides, EA has been emulated for probably at least 10 years. Doesn't seem like people have a hard time messing with the client.

Um... the graphical standard for mobile devices is... somewhat beyond that of the CC. The EC requires too many buttons to fit on a smartphone screen and would be problematic on even a tablet screen.

There is no other MMO that appeals to such a diverse client base. From grandmothers, to testosterone charged teenagers
You need to get out more - the MMO that doesn't have such a diverse player base is a rare duck nowadays. MMO's are mainstream, and have been for quite some time now.

That made me LOL and I am listening to hardstyle atm chair dancing. Plenty of MMO's out there with a diverse players base that can argue that statement.

Btw you know EA doesn't read these boards. You may want to use their official forums if you want EA to see your letter :) Mythic only comes here and they wont relay the message. :(

You could always use twitter and send it to Jeff since he is all Ultima.

I'm not going to get into an argument, but I know of no other MMO that offers what UO does in terms of variety of playstyle options - from house decoration that is more creative than any I've seen in any MMO, to hard core pvp. I don't know of too many truly elderly people playing MMO's like WoW or EVE. Certainly they attract a diverse client base, but not as wide as UO does.

In the event UO does end there truly is no need for them to turn over the source code. There are many UO emulators out there that run better than EA's actual code. UO's coding is a mess of abused and broken codes from over 15 years of damage where as say something like RunUO is relatively brand new and functions better, more optimized, and faster than EA's own servers and has much better in-game tools.

Hell theres some free shards that have been around almost as long as official UO at this point.
I think the players took control of UO into their own hands years ago and the only thing that makes it a grey area is that the original game is still around. If it wasn't and these were the only ways to play UO then it would be a non issue for anymore because UO would still be around and will still be around even after EA shuts the last server down.

I guess EA did inadvertently turn over the source code a long time ago... :)

A bit about the graphical standards and tablets...

You can pretty fine play CC on any W8 tablet out there - Uo getting worked over for android is a non believer tbh..
i tried UO on a W7 Samsung Slate a year ago, CC, and it was fun..

So, with the next cheap tabs with W8 RT comming out, CC on it should be tested - should work fine - even on a 249$ tab...

*Edit*
I wonder if you could actually pack the CC into a W8 app....since i dont knwo much about it, anyone knows?

Ignoring all of the massive roadblocks to UO becoming an app of any kind, if it did get made it would still not be worth playing without peripherals, which sort of defeats the purpose.

I mean I play baulders gate and icewind dales on my android tablet, but It requires a mouse, so I cant do it in a car or on the subway. Uo would be even worse, and of course would require an unlimited data plan.

I know everyone wants UO to become relevant again... but its just not gonna happen. That's ok. It doesn't have to. Doesn't mean the game is going to die soon, it's just a niche product, and that's ok.

If people want a relevant UO, they should hope for an actual sequel.
