Pre AOS, this would be a completely different topic, hence..

Post AOS, once you have the gear, including weapons, and any supplies depending on template. There is no best way to teach someone how to play a character except to go test it out. 1 v1, 3x1, 2 v2, whatever...practice, practice, practice...
15 years ago i learned that no matter how much you practice or train, until you go do it, you don't understand the speed at which things happen. There are pointers, but as far as taking one specific template and playing it well, requires practice in the field, not in a set situation.

Also, in UO you are forgetting to mention the golden rule. The best offense is a good defense. Surviving ganks, being dismounted, etc. playing your character defensively is the most important thing to learn. Do you know why? YOU CAN NOT WIN A FIGHT IF YOUR DEAD. so defense first.

When aos launched it was 1. Items 2. Player skill

Nowadays that is not the case. Why? Casting cap.

An experienced player who is GOOD at his template will overcome items.

Anyone who thinks this isn't the case just is not as good as they think they are.

I really like this idea in theory. But I don't think it will work to get me back into PvP. Not trying to turn this into a Pre AoS thread but it's just the truth. I used to love PvP and lived in Fel full time but when AoS came out I gave up living and playing in Fel. My play style just does not allow for me to spend 100's of millions on gear or spend tons of hours trying to hunt for stuff. So I just feel like I would be at a instant disadvantage because I have average gear.

If there was a way to return PvP to being a player skill based part of the game instead of being item based I might try to re-learn to arts.

Question on macros: I've heard of people using the mouse wheel for macros - how is this possible? Also, what spells would be good for the Up & Down directions of the wheel?

UoAssist, set key. I use target self/last target for my wheel keys.

If I "Target Self" for a heal, then hit "Last Target", will I end up retargeting myself?
No. Last Target is the last thing you targeted with your cursor. What can mess it up is if you teleport or x heal someone. You have to remember you xhealed so you will have to manually target the person you want to attack the first time.

Keep in mind too, there are gaming keyboards available with extra keys to put extra macros on and up to 18 button gaming mice available too.

They're not must have equipment but they are available depending on your macro needs.

How do I unbind "Codex of Wisdom" from F1 key? It's not listed in the macro tab in the options menu..

If it's UOA you just assign a macro to it.

I don't use my F keys for in game macros so im not sure if that works or not.

You can't unbind that unless you assign the F1 key to do something. It is a default setting in UO and the only way to get rid of it is to assign something to it.

Gaming Keyboards and Mice:
I just checked Dell.com and they don't have anything that looks interesting. Can you recommend a dealer & a nice KB & Mouse?

I don't recommend a gaming keyboard. It's hard for me to personally justify $150+ for 12 extra macro keys.

The mice vary by how many buttons you want and how many macros you really need. A lot of people swear by the 17 button Razr Naga mouse which is $60-80+ depending on the flashy colors you want. Basically it looks like a phone mated with a mouse and produced this thing with a keypad on the side.

I like the Razr Naga Hex which has 6 buttons on the side spaced out so it's not so cramped and Logitech has some decent products as well. BestBuy has a lot of these in stock so you can go check them out and see what you personally like.

I use the mouse that Dell sent with the computer. It has a right button, left button, a scroll ball, and a wire connecting it to the computer.
