The end of a story

In November 1997, I met Jimmy Hsu. Now, that wasn't his characters name- I first met him on his blacksmith named Aileen. We had so much in common it was almost frightening, but more on that later.

At the forge in Britain is where I met him. Starting out in UO, I focused more on mining, alchemy and scribes work. I would sell him my ingots for 5-7 gold each. That turned into adventuring together. After a few more months, those adventures turned into more than a few late night conversations. We were both named Jimmy. We were both engaged, both our fiance's families hated us, we were both taking test for our MCSEs. It was so odd. He was the only person who I ever shared my account information with (until I married my wonderful wife who I met in UO). And he shared his with me.

We lost contact for about a year as we were having issues with stability in our lives. Then we reconnected in UO by chance. Things were going better he said, but he wasn't sure that he could play UO much anymore and didn't have the time. He and his fiance had broken things off. Oddly enough, I was divorced by that time. But, he wanted me to use his account and maybe keep it up until he came back. I told him I would.

Today I closed that account. It's odd to say, it's one of the hardest things I've ever done. Over the years, it might have been down here and there, but that was before I got it. I sold the house that was on the account. Cleaned off the characters- all except Aileen, who I dressed the way he had he. In a fancy dress, dyed black, holding a smiths hammer. And logged her out at the Britain smith shop where we met.

Here's to you Jimmy my friend where ever life might have taken you. *raises a glass*

So Sad. Tonight as me and my wife argue about BS stuff.... somethin bout this thread.

Where else could you make such a friend, care about such things and let it have any impact at all on our own life.

Long live UO.

I had a Smith friend on Napa named Fubu Gear. We constantly mined minoc mines together and spent hours at the forge trying to reach gm. I don't know what happened to him, we lost contact years ago. I keep a suit of his armor in my bank account in memory and wish him well wherever he may be.

Sad, but nice story. I can't imagine how many close friendships began at the Britain smith shop. That's where I met my best in game buddy back in the day. Good times.

Britain smith shop is where I first met Frodo on Baja and the funny thing was my char was also named Frodo. LOL He tought me everything about being an honorable crafter and I still hold those values to be true. It is nice to look back to the start and remember our beginings and sad when people we knew are no longer here.

After reading your post it turned over a lot of emotions, some of my best friends I have made was in UO. Its very hard to say goodbye.

"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard"

I think the quote is very true when it comes to most of us who play UO

Now you know why I have so many accounts .........
Friends you meet in UO become part of your life in game, and to some extent outside of it as well.
It is super hard when I think of shutting down one of them.... instead I shift off temp account houseing and keep the friends account up and running...
Times have changed and so have we. Those of us remaining have had the privalige to have known many this way.
From Napa to Siege.. Origin to Hokuto so many friends have gone and not returned.
I miss them all.....

Life has hard choices at times for everybody. Some just quit paying a game to others moving onto another game. Currently in the GW2 guild I am in on my second account, counting me we have a total of 103 ex uo players. Some I have been friends with since my DaoC and Warhammer days. Found out recently one player I used to play with from the beggining of my UO stint but they had quit long before I ever did. Funny we used to fight against each other at that time. Her and I never put it together until a bunch of us were talking in TS the other night after a huge WvW battle and we were waiting for the reset and a bunch of us we just talking about games with huge battles we have had in the past. The rest I never knew in UO but a good bunch of people. They all vary from times they played during UO.

Thank you for the story NuSair. I bet it was really hard for you to close the account but I feel he would understand because as long as you kept the account open for him you are not responsible to do so. Sounds like you are a good friend to that person and I think they would really understand the situation.

I didn't know the history behind the house when I bought it from you. I started playing in 1997 and have come and gone many times. The peak of my friends was the year after publish 16. I remember hanging out at the brit bank, and getting repairs at the brit smith's shop. I remember starting a guid of reds and holding the Moonglow moongate for several days on Lake Superior. I remember the days of PVP in Bucs den with nothing but a death robe, a kryss, and a bag of bandies/regs. I remember loosing all my friends to Doom, and then loosing them again once the newness of AOS wore off.

Good memories, and hopefully still a few to come...

I appreciate the responses. I knew I wasn't alone in how I felt about this game, this community and the people that it has allowed us to come in contact with.

Hellstorm- that wasn't our house. Most of this was back before Tram, much less Ter Mur. We had two small houses in Ocollo. One for keeping our stuff and a second we used as a vendor house. When he allowed me use of his account, he had no houses on it- having just sold his Tower.

Thanks for clearing that up. Its a great house though. I am happy as can be to have one of only 27 spots in Tel Mur. I have always wanted a place 1 screen from a moongate... like since 1997. Thanks for your post too... it brought back lots of good memories!

Ouch. Within one year you went from being engaged to being married to being divorced? And it was frightening how much this guy had in common with you? Wow

Ah yes. The inevitable person who will react to a story he disapproves of (or does not understand, and of course equating the two) not with silence but with jumping in to show how he disapproves. Because, of course, the rest of us care, or need to care, about how he disapproves!

*chuckles* Be sure, also, to call the poster a "kid" or something as frequently you do in other circumstances!

Also he should find something to call "sad" in a condescending way.

The best friends i ever had in UO moved on as well. Back in 1998 my noob days I remember hanging out with one at the graveyard between Vesper and Cove, trying to build warrior skills. Things went well until the very occasional lich or a quite frequent PK showed up. Seems most of us were broke and had to share a one room shack between 5 of us but it was alot of fun.

I too held onto a large brick house that was given to me by an in-game named Spooner. It was improperly placed, had the old bugged double doors(which I never wanted to get fixed). Spooner was the guy who always responded when I needed a rez. He was a good friend in-game and I miss him. Over time I lost his phone number and he had long disappeared from ICQ. I held the house for over 10 years waiting for him to come back.

I moved to another shard and needed to place a house there. I made the decision. It felt right that it was time to move on, to let go. No one wanted it so I ended up letting it fall. I still feel guilty over that.

I still hope he returns someday. Just so I can rez his butt 20 times a night. That will feel good.

You paid at the very least $420 (assuming you just refreshed it every 90 days) for an account for 10 years for an old friend.... My god, everyone should be lucky enough to have a friend like you at least once in their life... Thanks for sharing, Amber - you're a good Witch, that's for sure...

Im holding an old 14*14 or something, just away from max storage, but its in no build area so i keep it instead of moving to severeal keep plots ive found over the years. Its a very nice location just north of yew bank in guardzone. Ive also got the plot next doors which are a legemite place to build, but since i got the both plots from same old friend ive keept them.

My daughter, when she played back many yrs ago played & chatted with FuBu constantly. Still on one of her toons in the bank are some parts of a suit he made for her by FuBu.
