Finding A Decent Pet..

So I know this is listed here somewhere, but I can't seem to find the correct wording.

I know when you tame a GD, you multiply the max skill by .9 for its max skill once tamed.

What is for the formula for finding the best stats? Is it just the normal stats cut in half or is it a specific formula?

Can't seem to find a pre-tame calculator. Been a while since I went taming.

The HP and STR will be 0.5 of the pretame values. The Mana and INT will be unchanged. Don't concern your self with the Stamina and DEX, as these can only be trained up to 125 (but they will also be 0.5 of the pretame values).

Have you tried the Pet Power Calculator in one of the stickies?

Just to add to what was already said, all the skills will lower but can be trained as following:
magery up to pre-tame
wrestling, tactics and resisting spells up to 75% of pre-tame or GM whichever is higher
others to GM

I believe you are incorrect.

• Wrestling, Tactics, and Resisting Spells will drop to 0.72*Pre-Tame Value once tamed. The new maximum for thses skills is 0.90*Pre-Tame Value.
• Magery will drop to 0.90*Pre-Tame Value. This will be the dragon's new maximum Magery.
• Meditation and Evaluate Intelligence can be trained to 100, so their Pre-Tame Value is of no concern.

Really ? Has this changed in the last few years ?

Though now that you say it, I agree with you for magery, it's 90% of the pre-tame skill and doesn't need to be re-trained except if your pet dies and looses some of course.
But wrest, tactics and resisting spells I prefectly remember being a 25% skill loss ....
Well of course maybe the website where I read this at the time was wrong, GD's where pretty new when I stopped playing And I have no means to check on my pets, I don't remember at all their pre-tame skills.

Greater Dragons have been like this since they were introduced. Once Tamed, there is a skill loss to Wrestling, Tactics, and Resisting Spells and a new skill cap is set for each of those skills. The dragon will drop to 0.72*Pre-Tame Value for each of those skills (losing 28%). Its new skill caps are 0.90*Pre-Tame Values. With this information, you can calculate the skill caps for a Greater Dragon both prior to taming and a fresh tame (no training). This is good, because sometimes you need to d a double check. RODGERS!!!

• Freshly Tamed / Untrained: Skill Cap = Skill Value / 0.8 OR Skill Cap = Skill Value x 1.25

You can be assured that if the Greater Dragon's Anatomy skill is less than 20, it has had no training.

Yes. The post tame hit points and strength will be half of what they were pre-tame.

Well then I probably read a wrong information

Rather than working back from the tamed GD figures that you want, the alternative is simply to look at the maximum wild GD stats/skills etc. For example, in the Stratics hunter's guide and I'm sure the pet power calculator also lists wild stats. That way you can just scribble down those stats and have them by your screen as you lore wild dragons. I used to have a wee notebook that had pet max stats for all the hunting pets, and you can even use an NPC book for it too.

What I do with any pet is have the wild average and max figures beside me when I'm loring wild ones, then I'll try to focus on whatever stats/skills I think that pet ought to have. I tend to tame the best I can find on day 1, taking note of that pet's wild stats and then my scouting involves looking for a better specimen after that.
