If you use the Enhanced Client - just hit the "print-screen" key and an image is saved in your My Documents/(Computer Name)/EA Games/Ultima Online Stygian Abyss/Screen Shot Folder.

If it is 2D and you are wanting to take lots in quick succession - I believe there is a program or two to assist with that - but I do not use 2D enough to advise you on it. Perhaps someone else can.

SnagIt from Techsmith should offer the capabilities to want.
A 30 days trial version can be downloaded from their website.

If you're using 2D, hit print screen, open up good ol Paint, and paste the image in there. No idea about "Enhanced" client.

For mashing the printscreen key to get a lot of pictures my recommendations are:

On windows "Gadwin printscreen" http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/ (click the get it now in the right sidebar, not the other gadwin products).

I doubt many UO players use Linux... but on Linux I use "scrot", a command line screen grabber application, tied into my window manager, Blackbox, with bbkeys.

Both are filled with options you'll never need, easy to use, are low overhead, and can handle a variety of file formats.

Thought I add this to this thread because I am truly curious what a UO screen shot would look like 3d. Somebody try it out and post the results please.

Good to see a good link for UOSU is still around. Been using that one since pre-T2A days, though mostly I tend to use the Print Screen/Paint option since Paint in Win 7 has become a somewhat respectable program (compared to XP and earlier anyway). However for having a hotkey to save a bunch of screenshots in quick succession, UOSU is great.

Are these images still saved as gigantic .bmp files, or has that changed?
Depends on your version of Windows. I believe it started with Vista that Paint also allowed saving in at least JPG and TIF as well as BMP, and under Windows 7, it saves as JPG, TIF, BMP, PNG, and GIF (not sure if Vista also had the full list, but I know JPG was in it).

I use Screenhunter 5. Runs in the background, you designate the folder, set a macro to snap the shot... works like a charm and is free.

Yes, the EC auto screenshots are in BMP still if you use the internal one. If you use the EC and plan on using the Print Screen/Paint method, it's probably advisable to change hotkeys in the Input tab of User Settings.

I was actually trying to ask what format the EC uses to save screen shots when you use the Print Screen button while you're logged in. It seems like when I last used it and made screen shots (back in 2009, I guess), they were automatically saved as .bmp files, which could gobble up a lot of your hard drive space in a hurry if you didn't realize what was going on and were making a lot of screen shots.
Just to follow up on what everyone else has replied with, yes, the EC is still using BMPs.

Would be nice if they gave an option. Personally, I prefer BMP, TIF, or TGA because it preserves image quality, and then I can adjust them to PNG or JPG later, but yeah, for most users, JPG is perfect, and should probably be the default option.

Prefer BMP here as well, No compression. Hard drives are pretty cheap now adays anyway. Just a tip though, For EC, It stops taking screenshots when you reach 999 screenshots but it doesn't warn you. Missed a few events because of that.

PNG would be best for UO, as far as compression goes. So for a novice, I would say, if you can find a program that snaps PNGs, that's pretty nice. UOSU JPGs aren't too bad, though.

Depends entirely on what level of compression is set and how much the end user is set on saving space. The real difference between PNG and JPG is one that most average users wouldn't even notice from a screenshot -- the "alpha channel" (though I'm not sure that's what PNG refers to it as) which allows for transparency and translucency in pixels. That's the uber real power of PNG, but for screenshots, it's sort of secondary.

True. I spoke in error. What I meant to say is PNG would preserve a UO screenshot better than JPG, while still provided some compression.

I've used UOSU for years both for UO-related stuff and not. Can't beat it for simple and quick.

I'm also using UOSU. But I would like something that, when you hit a key, starts taking shots every two seconds or so. Something like that out there?
